aligned.tax is HMRC-recognised software for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, built for people who keep their records in a spreadsheet and want to carry on doing exactly that. From April 2026, sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000 must keep digital records and send HMRC a quarterly update instead of one annual return. The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027. Most people caught by this already track their income and expenses in Excel, and there is no good reason to make them abandon it. So here is how it works. You upload the Excel workbook you already use, or start from one of our free templates at https://aligned.tax/free-mtd-spreadsheet-templates. If your figures live in Google Sheets, Apple Numbers or LibreOffice, export the file to XLSX first. Our Smart Map then reads the workbook and proposes which of your columns belong in which HMRC boxes, coping with merged cells, unusual headings and a tab per property. You review the figures and approve them. Only then are they sent to HMRC through the official MTD API, so nothing reaches HMRC without your confirmation. The mapping is saved, so the next quarter takes less setup. This kind of tool is often called MTD bridging software. On cost: individuals filing their own quarterly updates use aligned.tax free, always. Accountants and bookkeepers filing on behalf of clients use it free until April 2027, with a multi-client dashboard showing who has filed and who is overdue, plus role-based access so a preparer can prepare without being able to submit. Very simple process as I was so afraid…
Very simple process as I was so afraid it was going to be a lengthy process and not be able to manage this. Once I was registered and linked to HMRC, the process was great. Would definitely recommend.

It picked up all the right numbers from my spreadsheet first time. I had to download my google spreadsheet as an xls version. Other than that all worked smoothly and was easy to follow. For free software this is excellent.

At last a company that provides a service
We have been struggling for months to establish just what our longstanding accounts software provider planned to offer to make us MTD compliant. With the deadline for the first quarterly submission looming we sumbled upon aligned.tax. What a a revelation. Within less than half an hour we managed to register and make our submission to HMRC. Fully compliant and happy.

i am not a computer geek
i am not a computer geek - and i used this software pretty easily, I have a simple tax return so I keep my accounts on an excel spreadsheet which I ‘mapped’ without issues. Also I could actually speak to Anthony which was amazing and he was a real person!! I know!!!

Im not good with this kind of thing at all I was having panic attack after spending nearly all day trying to sort my digital tax out.
