After 2 years as a customer I recently refinanced out of Athena
Uncompetitive in todays high interest rate economy. Athena was great when cash rates were low, they had one of the lowest rates on offer … but as the cash rate has fast risen the are struggling to remain attractive and competitive to other lenders (and I’m not comparing them to other banks honeymoon rates)
Athenas marketing is also getting old. Today most bank now offer no fees loans and will easily give existing customers the same rates as new customers

We're sorry to see you go, especially as an Athenian for two years.
We wish we didn't have to raise our rates either. When the RBA raises the cash rate, it immediately impacts our cost of funds to the business. We try to absorb the impact for as long as possible, but our lean business model makes it challenging.
We’ve always said to look beyond the introductory rate. While there may be more competitive intro rates out there currently, we won't go behind your back. We are different; our mission is to shake things up and show Aussies that there's a better way.
Right from the start, we ditched the loyalty tax, being the first Aussie lender to do so. We believe it's totally unfair to penalise loyal customers. That's why existing customers will always receive the same rate as new customers on like-for-like variable loans. Much better than the others
Friendly staff guided me through the process ... perhaps not as straight forward as some lenders might suggest ( more like a roast than a stir fry) but the support from the Athena guys pushed the process along. By old lender said 20+days but it happened much quicker once we were at settlement stage.
The app seems pretty straight forward and useful and the loan itself seems super flexible to allow extra payments etc.

No fuss
No fuss, very smooth process, everything was handled quickly with very little back and forth. Interest rates were much more reasonable than the big 4.

No longer competitive
No longer competitive. Draw you in with low interest rates then fail to hold that position and become uncompetitive with high rates. Forcing you to pay the loyalty tax.
The response is not correct, and what all lenders say as they charge much more after drawing in customers at a low price launch.
Fact: Athena has increased its rates MORE than the rba increases.
Fact: As the rba rates went up that enables other banks to not only hold but many have increased by less than the RBA. As they are earning much much more interest in total.

Hey Luke, we want to reassure you that we absolutely don’t use sneaky tactics like rate bait to lure customers in. No scorpion home loans or loyalty tax here at Athena!
Loyalty is royalty at Athena. We are the first and one of the only Aussie lenders to ditch the loyalty tax. Our automatic rate match guarantees that our existing customers will always get the same rate as new customers on like-for-like loans. We think the loyalty tax is totally unfair and we want to see it gone.
Whenever the RBA increases the cash rate, it affects our cost of funds immediately. We try to absorb these costs for as long as is sustainably possible. We understand that times have been difficult with multiple rate rises and wish we had better news each time.
Last year in July, we did have to increase more than the RBA cash rate increase. We rely on funding markets, where there are a bunch of additional costs on top of the cash rate. Conditions in Australia and globally impact these funding costs and they’ve increased over recent months much more than the cash rate. We absorb them as much as we can but we always run super lean so in July last year we reached a point where we couldn’t absorb those additional funding costs any longer. We want to reassure you that whenever we can keep the rates or save you money, we absolutely will!
