Avoid if you can!!
I took out a car finance agreement with Close Brothers around two years ago, at what I now consider to be an extremely high interest rate.
When arranging the finance, I dealt with Tom, who initially told me the agreement would be for 48 months. After signing, I discovered that the actual agreement was for 60 months. I accept that I should have read the terms and conditions more carefully before signing, but I foolishly trusted what I had been told during the process.
I was also told that after I had been paying the agreement for a year or two, I could get back in touch and look at restructuring the finance. Having now contacted Close Brothers to see if this was possible, I was simply told it wasn’t an option.
My biggest issue is the interest rate. If you have little or no credit history, I would strongly recommend shopping around before accepting finance from Close Brothers. Speak to your local credit union first — in my experience, the difference in interest rates can be enormous.
I feel I made an expensive mistake by trusting what I was told rather than shopping around properly.
My advice: do your homework, check every figure and term yourself, and speak to your credit union before signing anything with Close Brothers. I certainly wouldn’t use them I would also like to update my review to confirm that I have now cleared my Close Brothers finance agreement by taking out a loan with my local credit union at approximately half the interest rate.
This demonstrates that a more affordable borrowing option was available to me, and I ultimately had to take matters into my own hands rather than receive any meaningful assistance from Close Brothers.
To reiterate, it was your own employee, Tom, who told me that I could contact Close Brothers after a year or two to discuss restructuring my agreement. It was not the dealership, as your response appears to suggest.
I accept that I should have read the original agreement more carefully before signing. However, my complaint remains that I relied on what your employee told me about the possibility of restructuring the finance at a later date.
Thankfully, I have now moved on from Close Brothers Car Finance

As acknowledged in your review, the agreement was not reviewed in full before signing. The agreement terms, including the duration, repayments, total cost of credit and interest rate, were provided prior to completion to allow an informed decision to be made.
While we cannot comment on discussions that may have taken place with the dealership, the term and interest rate of a finance agreement are fixed when the agreement is entered into. Customers may contact us regarding early settlement options; however, this is different from restructuring the original agreement.
We also recognise that rates can vary between lenders, as each provider applies its own lending criteria and risk assessment. We assess all applications individually, taking into account factors such as credit history, affordability, income and loan-to-value criteria.
We encourage customers to compare available options and carry out their due diligence before entering into any financial agreement.
