The two volume set included a photographic portfolio which was quite stunning with sublime and evocative images. The text, covering the early attempts conveyed the sometimes foolhardy, often brave, and generally harrowing stories, contrasting totally with what are almost now just the climbs by rich tourists.
Excellent well produced book
I purchased the product as a birthday present for a relative, an active hill-walker/mountaineer. Everest is beautifully bound, illustrated and presented, as are all Folio books. It was deeply appreciated by the recipient.
This is an impressive duo of books. As my mum would have said 'not cheap' but very good value. The descriptions of Everest expeditions by the compendium of experts are fascinating. But for me the photos are the winner: to think that photographers lugged massively heavy equipment and tripods up thousands of feet of mountain, took their own darkroom tents to process film and then the RGS and Folio have scanned and enhanced these to produce such superb results. I bought a 5x4 film camera having seen this: if they could get it done a hundred years ago I should have a chance of something on a hill in Scotland
