‘The blood-stained drama of the last decades of the Roman Republic… is told afresh with tremendous wit, narrative verve and insight… What characters there were in this drama!’
  1. Christopher Hart, Independent on Sunday
Described by renowned author Ian McEwan as ’narrative history at its best’, Rubicon brings to life the last century of the Roman Republic, when Rome was transformed from a democratically run empire into one ruled by an emperor. With his extensive research and authoritative prose, Tom Holland has brought a fresh perspective to this dramatic era.

While I'm still making my way through it, I find Holland's writing style very easy to follow, as he has a proven knack for taking the events of people and cultures removed from our own by two millennia and bringing out the personal motivations behind the prime movers of their age. Folio have also published 'Greek Fire' by the same author, and I would heartily recommend it for anyone interested in the period which it covers.

A Roman Empire brought alive . Enough double dealing , back stabbing ,devious plotting and sheer political genius for the most conspiratorial of conspirator addicts

It looks good so far. I haven't read the book yet (since I just got it), but the physical quality of the book is excellent, completely up to the Folio Society's standards.
