Exploitative and amoral
H&B took nearly £40,000 from my 90yr old stepfather who has dementia. Over the summer of 2024 H&B sold my stepfather a vast quantity of first day covers and commemorative coins. The total ‘sales’ were over £84,000. It was only when I got a power of attorney that I discovered the extent of their sales activity.
Over that summer they were taking nearly £10,000 a month in instalment payments. When I contacted them to find out what was happening, their only answer was that they have a responsibility to their customer and assume they have the funds to buy whatever they’re sold.
My stepfather has dementia and is susceptible to sales calls. He also loves to chat to people on the phone, and loved his collection, something that H&B were happy to indulge in return for more exploitative calls. It is plainly obvious on the phone that my stepfather gets confused, but H&B saw sales and money and didn’t care about any impact.
H&B eventually agree for the return of some items in return for cancellation of the debt, but he was still over £35,000 out of pocket. We now have to ration his home care.
He was hugely upset when I told him what had happened. His life-long passion had been turned into shame and embarrassment. He felt stupid and couldn’t understand they H&B would do this, thinking they cared for him as a long-term customer.
It was clear from the call logs I got from them that the sales team rapidly increased the calls and sales to my stepfather over 2024, knowing they were indulging his passion and exploiting him. It was only after I stopped all payments that they took notice. Until then they were happy to take £10,000 a month from him. At no point did anyone from H&B check the repayments were affordable, they just kept increasing their sales.
Do not use this company, they say they have policies to protect their customers. This is untrue – they refused to share these alleged policies or show any contrition for their actions.
They will exploit anyone who is a customer and have no morals at all.

We are very sorry to read your comments, but we do not accept the characterisation of our business, our staff, or the way this matter was handled. Harrington & Byrne has traded for more than 12 years, and we take our responsibilities towards all clients extremely seriously, particularly where there may be any suggestion of vulnerability.
We have internal policies and training in place to help staff identify and respond appropriately to potential vulnerability, including guidance based on Trading Standards principles and a structured approach to recognising, empathising, asking appropriate questions and listening carefully. When we are made aware of a Power of Attorney, health concern or other relevant circumstance, we take immediate steps to review the account and apply appropriate safeguards.
In this case, the customer had held an account with us for over seven years and had previously demonstrated independent decision-making, including choosing whether to purchase, declining offers, and returning items where appropriate. Before you contacted us, we had not been notified that the customer should be treated as vulnerable.
Once you made us aware of the circumstances, we acted promptly by freezing the account and preventing any further activity. We also constructively resolved the matter by agreeing to accept a substantial number of returns outside our standard return period, which cleared the outstanding balance and resulted in a refund. This resolution was agreed almost a year ago.
We strongly reject any suggestion that Harrington & Byrne deliberately exploits vulnerable customers. That is not how we operate. We appreciate that this is an upsetting and sensitive matter for your family, but we believe we acted responsibly once the position was brought to our attention and made significant concessions in an effort to reach a fair resolution.

By far the most important thing I need for a positive experience is to be able to hear clearly a sales person WITHOUT a strong accent.
