These guys are the real deal when it comes to service. The office staff are second to none and extremely helpful. The engineers are tidy, helpful and always willing to answers any questions or concerns i had. Very happy and would happily recommend.

I booked Hartleys for a boiler repair, but they missed two scheduled appointments without notifying me. When they finally showed up, the technician seemed rushed and didn’t fully explain the issue. The repair was expensive, and I’m still having problems. Very disappointing service.

Great team! Very reliable, very tidy and arrived on time. Can’t fault them. The staff are always very polite and always keep me updated. Will definitely be using again!

Unfortunately, my experience with Hartleys Plumbing & Heating York was extremely disappointing. I contacted them for a quotation to install a new bathroom — Lewis came out to assess the job but was at the property for less than five minutes compared to others who were there for upwards of 20 minutes. He didn’t take a single measurement, wrote nothing down, and simply listened briefly to what I described before leaving.

Before he left, I asked when I could expect the quotation. As he walked away, I had one of two thoughts: either he was so experienced he didn’t need to take notes or measurements — or I was never going to hear from him again. Unfortunately, it was the latter.

I followed up multiple times and spoke with Kate in the office, who was courteous and clearly doing her best. She repeatedly apologised and assured me it was being chased, but the quote never came. Eventually, she admitted she didn’t know why he wasn’t getting back to me and didn’t know what else to say. I pointed out that a basic level of professional courtesy — a simple message to say he wasn’t pursuing the job — would have saved considerable time and frustration.

What he may see as acceptable is, frankly, both unprofessional and discourteous. While he was avoiding the job, I was stuck waiting to receive his quote so I could compare it with others and move forward. Because I didn’t have all the quotes I needed, I wasn’t able to schedule the work — and by the time I gave up chasing snd waiting on false promises, other plumbers’ availability had changed. A simple quotation process turned into months of unnecessary delay.

If there were aspects of the job that made it unsuitable or off-putting for him, that’s entirely understandable — but a professional should be able to explain that openly. That kind of conversation gives the customer clarity and shows respect. Avoiding it altogether only highlights a lack of emotional maturity, and suggests that despite the branded vans and outward appearance of scale, the business isn’t yet equipped to handle the demands of larger, more complex projects.

I later discovered the company was formed in Sept 2022 and that Lewis would have been 23 at the time. There’s nothing wrong with being young or ambitious — but with growth comes responsibility. If you want to be taken seriously as a professional business, you need to demonstrate reliability, communication, and self-awareness. None of those were present in this experience.

Based on this, I wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending them.

New Boiler installed by Hartleys Plumbing and Heating Engineers. From the initial call speaking to Kate in the office to Lewis fitting the new boiler the service was super efficient, friendly and ease free. A very reasonable price for a new boiler installed also with a 10 year warranty which we did not expect! We would highly recommend Hartleys. Thank you.

What a fantastic service we have just had from Hartley’s Plumbing and Heating Ltd.
I called at 09:30 on Monday morning for a quote for a new boiler; Lewis came out within an hour and we had the quote in writing by 15:00. By 14:30 Wednesday the boiler had been fit and our house is heating up nicely.
The fitters, Nick and Callum, were both very professional, friendly and approachable.
They fitted the boiler in ultra quick time and tidied everything away nicely. They took time to explain how The Nest system worked and helped me to download the necessary app.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Hartley’s to anyone looking for a plumbing or heating service in York and they will certainly be the top of my list for any future plumbing jobs.

Great service, Lewis came to an emergency call at 10 pm within 20 minutes, less than a week later Hartley's plumbing and heating engineers have installed a new boiler, the engineer came at the agreed time, was polite, professional and left everything tidy. Lewis then came to check everything was OK and I was satisfied with the work. Highly recommend this firm.
