I am an insurance agent with over 40 years experience. I bought 2500.00 of coverage when my pup was young. She is 8 and has some major problems. I looked at my premium...199..00 a month...for 2500.00 of coverage with a 250. Deductible and 90 % copay. People need to watch the premium. I admit I didnt but they are making money on me. I am paying more per month than what I would receive. Please check the premiums and cancel as your pet gets older because it is a total scam.
The person I spoke to on the phone said..if you cancel there is no coverage. Ummm there is no coverage. I have already paid in premiums what they would have paid.

I’ve been with Hartville for 6 years and 15 before that and they have been great. The claims process is easy through their app, and they covered 90% of my dog's emergency visits and meds. We just lost our beautiful dog and they were incredibly compassion. I don’t feel like we are just a number to them. Their premiums definitely increase as your dog ages, but it’s worth the peace of mind the policy brings.

I think this company’s business model is to try to get its customers to forget that it exist while quietly pulling in premiums. I’ve been a customer for nine years. This year, my premium went from $74 to $255 a month. To be fair, I did get my annual two sentence email asking me to review my policy because the rate may be changing. I did not pay enough attention to since the policy had previously only increased by five to $10 a month. They are difficult to communicate with, and they rarely covered the actual amount that I paid. They will only cover up to their outdated book fee. I wanted to cancel for years, but I’ve been paralyzed by the thought of “that one big event.” Now it is easy to cancel since they charge that amount every couple months. Shame on me for not catching the issue until I reviewed my bank statement and shame on them for taking advantage of people.

BEWARE: Stay away from this company. They recently took over 24 Pet Insurance whom I’ve been a loyal customer for 10 years. They are so disorganized and ever rep says something different. They have handled the transition so poorly and will end up costing me tens of thousands of dollars at the absolute worst time. I tried to contact them and even asked leadership reach out but they have failed to do get back and make things right. Worst insurance company experience I have ever had. They just don’t care and it shows z Shame on them. Buyer beware. There’s far better companies out there. Ball is in your court Hartville to make this right.

I read people's reviews- change is hard switching to this company after being with 24-hr Pet Watch. Our customer service was so helpful in making the switch and we are so pleased to know what we are getting for the $$ especially understanding pre-existing conditions. Ask questions and this company is so helpful in educating to move forward with what you need. Thank you for the help and listening we received. I would give NEGATIVE stars if I could.

1.) I was forced into Hartville Pet Insurance because I was a 24PetWatch/MyPetHealth customer. I guess they bought them out or something.
2.) My plan was going to be canceled because I never set up the online account — they didn’t tell me I had to in any of the information.
3.) My premium shot up to $210 without any notification whatsoever, which is likely illegal but it doesn’t matter it’s just bad business either way.
4.) They don’t have ANY WAY TO CANCEL your policy on the website. So you contact the support line…
5.) It’s a bunch of robots forcing you through promotions for LIFE ALERT type systems and cell phones… ????? There is NO way to get a human. NO way to cancel. This is honestly the worst experience I’ve had with a company… probably EVER IN MY LIFE. SCAM!!!! Stay as far away as possible if you can. I’m going to have my CC company stop payment for me because I bought from Lemonade instead.

If you were a customer of 24PetWatch and were "transferred" to Hartville please be very careful when reading the changes to your policy. We received a notice indicating what would no longer be included in our policy, a significant reduction, and a considerable increase in our premiums. I was able to find multiple companies, with much higher ratings, offering considerably better policies for far less money. We decided on Prudent Pet, but do your own due diligence and find a company that suits your needs. Remember, you must have, like us, trusted 24PetWatch (Purina Pet Care if you had a policy long enough), and this is NOT 24PetWatch.

I paid for THOUSANDS for insurance for 4 of my cats for years and at first they were good. Then all of a sudden they stopped covering anything. Everything was a pre existing condition in an infinity loop you were never let out of. Preventative care is deductible so they never pay a penny for it.

They denied several bills for one of my kitty's who had chf, I appealed one so they only paid for one for that.

I made the mistake of insuring my new kitten with them because they assured me their best plan would cover pre conditions and chronic care. But about 2-3 years ago they said it will not cover that. So basically I was LIED TO BY THESE FRAUDS. I should've known better.

Now I am stuck because he is older now although not really old etc. so it will be harder to find something else.
I took him once for xrays when he was a kitten since he may have swallowed something we went to an er. They only covered half of the x rays costs etc. A SCAM,

His insurance goes up a huge amount each year and they have paid for almost NOTHING. I have paid them THOUSANDS FOR HIM now and they have paid almost nothing. I'm sure they will not pay again if god forbid he needs something major.

The worst….ever! Always had to fight and resubmit on every claim, despite following their “guidelines for submission”. Even an end of life claim got denied! If we could give them a zero we would

Recently this company took over for a different pet insurance. They did not submit my policy the same way my previous policy was. They’re telling me that I have to cancel my policy and reenroll, but I would lose my benefits for illness for my animal. They would say my dogs condition will be a pre-existing condition now. I said my insurance my old insurance should have sent the same policy come over to you guys so I didn’t have to worry with pre-existing. It’s a condition my animal has for life and she has to get monthly injections which are costly. They are blaming me. They’re pointing the finger that I didn’t call in time, etc. From my understanding my old insurance transferred everything over to this insurance. I did not know that payment wasn’t being made and I did not know they did not have the accident and illness. They are not trying to help or rectify. They’re basically telling me that there’s nothing they can do which is a lie there’s always something somebody can do. They are choosing not to. Because their money, hungry thieves. So now I have to figure out a way to afford insurance now that will not cover my dog shot and pay for my dog shot everymonth. I didn’t choose to pick a different insurance. This happened within the company. Out of my control. All I’m asking is that they honor my old policy which has accident and illness that way my dog is covered. Without it being labeled a pre-existing condition.

Like other reviews I've seen, they took over my pet insurance policy from another company (24PetWatch). A month into their holding the policy, it was abruptly canceled. No reason given. No apparent attempts at taking payment even though they had the auto-pay info from the previous company. If that was the issue, you'd think they'd reach out at some point but nothing. Tried to re-add my cat to re-start coverage and got stuck in an endless loop where it wouldn't complete the process. Forget it. I'll find insurance elsewhere. Fortunately they never got a dime from me and due to their incompetence, they never will.

Awful company. Downgraded my policy without my consent, screwing my dog over near the end of her life. I don’t know how these people sleep at night, knowing that they hurt people and their Innocent pets. This also happened during a transfer from 24pet watch that I had no control over - they totally took advantage of the situation and left vulnerable pets with no coverage. Sounds like they screwed anyone over that transferred from 24pet watch - very shady

My policy was transferred from 24 PetWatch and the price went up by 20%. I found better insurance elsewhere so I called in to cancel my policy and completed the cancellation.
5 weeks later I was still being billed, and when I called in I was told that they scheduled the cancellation for the day after my next billing period.

So instead of immediately cancelling my policy (which I am fully within my rights to do), they had to wait until the policy transferred to Hartville, and then once it had transferred to Hartville and billed me for my first cycle with Hartville (which I didn't want, hence the entire reason for me trying to cancel my policy) then they initiated the cancellation.

I call Hartville to ask why this happened and when I'm going to receive a refund, and they tell me that they have no information about a refund and have no idea if one is coming, and I'll just have to wait and see.

I'm glad I work in the veterinary business so I can tell everyone to stay as far away from Hartville as humanly possible.

PetWatch24 transferred my policy to Hartville, telling me I did not need to do anything, and the policy and billing would continue. All of my details were transferred to Hartville including bank card details for payment. They failed to take the payment in January, and then contacted me by post to tell me my policy was cancelled. No email or phone call, but snail mail only.
They did email me on Saturday 8 Feb, telling me coverage ceases on 10 Feb, but of course their phone lines are closed over the weekend.
When I finally received the letter on Feb 8 (it took two weeks), I looked on the policy page to see no pet listed and no policy.
When I called Hartville on Feb 11, they said they would see if the policy could be reinstated and would call me back.
They didn't call, but DID take the premium for both January and February on February 12!
When I called to ask why, they informed me that there could not be a lapse in coverage so they took January's money too! Even though my policy was not in effect and had been "cancelled".
You can bet that if I had made a claim in January, they would have denied it.
Their only alternate option was to restart the policy (Which was cancelled due to their error), and suffer a 14 day lapse in coverage.
They refused to refund the payment for the month which was cancelled, and said it was state law, but would not provide me with that state law. They also said they emailed me on Jan 20 to notify me of the cancellation, but could not forward me that email either. They refused any goodwill payment to make up for THEIR ERROR.
So I will be looking for alternate coverage, and advise everyone to stay away from Hartville - they certainly strive to maintain the poor reputation of insurance companies! I would not guarantee that they would pay out even if I was covered!

They can't seem to get anything right. When they took over our policy from the previous company, they tried using an old credit card to bill us - even though they had the new one. Gave us no notice that we were unpaid (thanks to their error) and cancelled our dog, who is in poor health. Before that we tried to sign up our cat, but they couldn't figure out how to add him to the policy. What a disaster and now our dog can't get covered anywhere. Their incompetence is going to cost us a lot of money.

My owner called Hartville to make sure that her dog's TPLO surgery from tearing her cruciate ligament (ACL for people), and they said that it would be covered. They have now denied the $5000 claim after she's already paid for it, and their stance is that since the owner did not see an accident or injury, it's not an injury. They say it is an illness that causes the rupture and thus is not covered under her accidental/injury policy. I responded with a long letter about how this patient had no orthopedic history and was acutely unable to put weight on their leg one day after coming in from the backyard, obviously indicating an acute injury. Their response was, "Knee and ligament conditions are orthopedic illnesses...regardless of cause". Do not use this company, as they are the only ones I know of who can deny a simple knee surgery, so there is no telling what else they would deny.

Hartville is so easy to use. They are quick with claim processing. When you call you get a real person to talk to. They really care about your pets and you. I recommend them to everyone with pets!

I’ve had positive experience with Hartville Pet Insurance. The claims process is very easy and user friendly. Payments are made fast where applicable and EOBs are easy to understand.

Hartville processed our claim so fast my head was spinning. Can’t say enough about their product as well as their service.

Easy to submit claims, clear explanations, never an issue.
