Serious safeguarding issues – Ghana
Our 21-year-old daughter travelled to Ghana with The Mighty Roar in summer 2026, intending to volunteer for six weeks. She returned home early following experiences which left us with serious concerns about safeguarding, professional boundaries and the oversight of volunteers within the Ghana programme.
We raised our concerns formally and in detail with The Mighty Roar. We were extremely disappointed with their response and did not feel that a number of the specific issues we raised had been adequately addressed.
We have since become aware of concerns raised by other families about their experiences with the Ghana programme, which has made us question whether our daughter's experience should be viewed in isolation.
Given the seriousness of the issues raised, I have been in contact with the British Embassy in Accra and intend to raise the matter with my local MP.
I would encourage anyone considering the Ghana programme to ask careful questions about safeguarding, local staff oversight, professional boundaries and how concerns are investigated.

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns following your daughter’s time in Ghana. We are sorry that her experience led her to leave the programme early and that, following her departure, you and your family were dissatisfied with aspects of her experience.
We do, however, feel it is important to provide some context for anyone reading this review, particularly given the seriousness of the allegations being made.
We have discussed these matters extensively with you and your daughter by email, over a considerable period of time, in an effort to understand the concerns raised, investigate them properly and resolve the matter. We have also carried out a detailed internal investigation, speaking with the local team, members of the wider community and the other volunteers who were present during the relevant period.
That investigation did not substantiate the safeguarding concerns described in this review.
It is also important to distinguish between concerns that someone personally experienced and allegations based on information they were subsequently told by other people. A significant proportion of the safeguarding allegations raised with us were based on conversations and information relayed by other volunteers, rather than events witnessed by your daughter herself. In several instances, the information provided was either inconsistent with the accounts of other people present or did not accord with the information available to us.
We spoke with the other volunteers who were present during this period, and the accounts we received did not support the picture presented in this review. We cannot present these allegations as established facts when our investigation did not substantiate them.
Throughout your daughter’s time in Ghana, our local team made considerable efforts to support her, including assisting her when her luggage was lost and doing what they could to help her settle into the programme. We have found no evidence that she was denied appropriate support or that the local team acted in the manner subsequently alleged.
It is also relevant that many of the concerns described in detail after your daughter had left the programme were not raised with the local team in the same form while she was there. This meant that we had to investigate a number of allegations retrospectively, including allegations based on conversations between volunteers and events which your daughter had not personally witnessed. We nevertheless took them seriously and made extensive enquiries rather than simply dismissing them.
We recognise that your daughter has a different recollection of events. However, taking someone's account seriously does not mean automatically accepting every allegation as fact. Our responsibility was to examine the information available to us objectively, consider different accounts and reach a conclusion based on the evidence. That is what we did.
Our expectations regarding safeguarding and professional boundaries are clear. Members of our local teams are expected to maintain appropriate professional boundaries, and our Code of Conduct sets expectations for volunteers regarding relationships with members of the local community. These standards continue to be reinforced across our programmes.
We have explained our findings in detail through our email correspondence. We appreciate that you remain unhappy with the outcome, but after conducting an in-depth investigation and considering the accounts of those involved, we do not accept that the Ghana programme operated in the manner suggested by this review.

I was volunteering for 2 weeks in Kenya, one week in a childcare programme and one week in a hospital. It was such an incredible, eye opening experience.I went with my friend and we meet so many other amazing volunteers from all over the world. The organisation make it very easy to meet people and I would definitely recommend solo travelling as there were many solo travellers. Everyone we met was so friendly and welcoming and we got to witness so many things in the hospitals we would never get the chance to see at home. It was an amazing experience

An amazing experience in Bali
An amazing experience in Bali. The team was communicative and incredibly helpful at all times and the pick up from the airport was swift and painless. I volunteered for 2 weeks in Tanzania. It was the best time ever. A very rewarding experience. I got to do a mixture of childcare and the dog sanctuary to help out. And the weekend trip to the safari was amazing. All the staff during volunteering and at the accommodation were 10/10. I miss them all very much and have made some friends for life.

I volunteered in childcare/teaching in…
I volunteered in childcare/teaching in Bangkok for 2 weeks. It was a nice experience helping teach English in nurseries and primary schools in Bangkok. The hotel was also nice since they had air conditioning and allowed us to access the cafe for eating and socialising with others. The local team was friendly and welcoming to me as well as all the other volunteers I met. It was nice that they gave us freedom to choose which schools to go to and I also had a lot of free time to explore Bangkok. I also enjoyed the overnight trip to a rural area in a province near Bangkok that was organised by the local team.
However, some parts of it was a bit disorganised. I didn’t really know what my volunteering role involved and whether I need to prepare for it. I was thrown into unfamiliar situations and had to learn what to do by observing and improvising. It would be better if there was a clear plan and schedule to follow so all the volunteers knew what they had to do each day. I feel like we also need to be taught how to teach the children English as sometimes we had to think of activities on the spot and felt unprepared. It would also be nicer if all the volunteers could’ve went to the schools / nurseries together as it was intimidating to go on my own.

We’re sorry to hear that you sometimes felt unsure about what to expect from your volunteering role and would have valued more guidance and structure. We took your comments seriously and discussed them with our team in Bangkok. As part of this, we’re strengthening the guidance provided to volunteers at the nursery, including clear step-by-step information on arrival, and improving the information shared before volunteers travel so they have a clearer understanding of their role and how to prepare.
We also understand your comments about travelling to placements independently. Volunteer numbers can vary during the year, which meant there were occasions when volunteers attended placements individually during your stay. We acknowledge that this can feel unfamiliar, particularly when settling into a new environment.
We’ve really appreciated being able to discuss your feedback with you directly, and we were especially pleased to hear in our follow-up that, despite the areas you highlighted, you really enjoyed your trip and felt that you learnt a lot through the experience. We hope your time in Bangkok continues to be a happy and memorable part of your travels.

Horse Riding Wildlife Conservation in Zimbabwe
This was my second time volunteering with TMR and as always can’t fault them. It’s so handy to know they’re always an email away and were particularly helpful in assisting me to rearrange my dates and make a lot of amendments this trip after my travel companion dropped out.
The local team at Imire are brilliant and the volunteer accommodation is amazing with a beautiful dam, a zebra who lives the garden, a swimming pool, cosy living area and limited numbers to each room. Jane and Taffy were amazing hosts cooking and cleaning for us during our stay.
In one short week we were able to track countless rhinos, walk with elephants, ride among giraffes, observe Crispin the crocodile at feeding time, see lots of other bush life including a python, antelopes and pumbas, help repair boundary fences and collect rocks to build a bridge, and spend time with the community!
As with the Sri Lanka sea turtle project I completed in 2024, ethical standards were high and costs comparably low to other volunteer organisations. 100% will be back :)

Best trip ever!!
I came to Tanzania for 3 weeks to do childcare and dog sanctuary and I loved it!! From the very start everyone was very welcoming. I learnt so much about the culture and the Masai and got to do some welcome activities with them which I will remember forever. When at the school I had a great time knowing I helped the children warms my heart. Mama Helen and her team in the younger years are so lovely and make sure you are cared for and never do anything you don’t like. The dog sanctuary was awesome you can see the staff try their best and really appreciate the volunteers. The staff at accommodation are so lovely and kind and always make sure you’re ok and make the effort to get to know you. If you need any help you can easily reach out on WhatsApp and they reply so quick! I really recommend that everyone should do this as it’s the best experience of my life!! Shoutout to Daniel, junior, Felix, Neyma, Alice, the drivers, mama Helen, Brenda, Peter, shibani and everyone else!!

I had a wonderful time at The Mighty…
I had a wonderful time at The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. I have to particularly thank Chamo, Thilini, Kavi and the others for their kindness and willingness to always help whatever the situation. Before you decide to do your medical placement here, I would advise only doing 2 weeks maximum as a medical student, as the programme is strictly observational only and it does become very repetitive - I found myself on the same ward 3 times! It was however a great experience to see how the hospital in Balapitiya was ran. Finally, the rooms are okay, they can be very cramped and there is absolutely nowhere to store your clothes or bags (except under the bed but no drawers or anything) so I would take that into consideration when packing for this trip. The beds all have nets and there is 1 bathroom per room. They provide towels and bedding, as well as air conditioning and WiFi. Aside from the hospital, you will fall in love with the towns surrounding the TMR base, and find yourself not wanting to leave - there are amazing brunch and food places as well as a free pool on the beach for TMR volunteers.

4 week stay in Sri Lanka
Completed 4 weeks with The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka. Staff were amazing, always quick to reply to messages, very welcoming and always happy to help.
