Extremely disappointing experience and lacking in professionalism.
I’m absolutely horrified today to receive from Colin Hardie the owner a dreadful email today refusing to replace the remaining windows in my Murieston house. The property here is very much a work in progress and they appeared very happy to provide me windows, when and as required. Even though I experienced a great number of issues with this firm, I remained a loyal customer and remained on good terms throughout the entire process. The problems arose simply because of the lack of professionalism on behalf of their surveyor Andy. We were extremely pleased with our front windows that they installed at the outset and left a glowing review. However the problems started when we asked for quotes for our back windows. I discussed what I wanted, just the standard tilt and turn, with Andy but sadly the quotes weren’t based on the windows I asked for. I totally agree that I didn’t check the diagrams closely to see where the handles were positioned. The ones on the quotation would have been extremely dangerous to have in upstairs rooms as the swung out from the bottom. A young child could have easily fallen over the window sill. The fitters arrived with the first upstairs window and when they had half completed it I went to see how it looked. They even confirmed that the window shouldn’t be used upstairs and it also was a more expensive window. They phoned the company and I was told that as I hadn’t checked the diagrams closely I would have to pay half the installation cost which amounted to £150. I would also have to pay the balance of this window and the correct window plus the full installation of £299. I had absolutely no problem with this. The next window to arrive Andy had measured incorrectly and it was far too big. The fitters were very upset as this was now happening frequently and they phoned the company. It took approximately 4 weeks for the new window to be delivered. All this time there were gaping holes around the window space in the walls and it was winter. I received no refund between the price of the larger window and the correct size window. Hoppers in our original front sitting room window installed by the previous owner Andy told us we could have trickle vents added to them as they didn’t have any. The fitters arrived to fit them but informed me that there was a high risk of shattering the hoppers and advised me not to have them installed. The order was cancelled on their advice. I’m now in a position to order windows for our utility room and two bathrooms before our workmen commence work. I’ve checked the measurements on the original quote dated 2025 and a number of measurements aren’t correct. I phoned the firm to ask if the fitters could check the measurements BEFORE my deposits were paid as the measurements didn’t appear to be correct and once again they arrive with the wrong size windows. I was informed that they “don’t do this”. Yesterday I phoned and asked if I could order just the utility window, obviously there’s been a price increase since the quote last year and could the fitters when they come to install it, check the measurements for the two bathrooms? I need to order them immediately as I’ve got workmen installing new bathrooms. As I didn’t hear back from the company today and I’m eager to organise the windows, I sent them a message. This resulted in Colin Hardie sending me this extremely surprising email. To turn away business for windows for a utility room, 2 bathrooms, bedroom, kitchen and large conservatory hopper windows, front door and Tudo cladding for the dormer plus for my tenanted house in Baberton which needs windows and doors. Seems a very odd decision to refuse to accept any more work from me when I didn’t complain and when it was entirely his company’s fault?
