A Daikin ducted air conditioning product/installation issue
A Daikin ducted air conditioning system was installed in 2020–2021 while the previous owner/builder was renovating the house. We first noticed increasing noise from the system during winter 2024, shortly after we purchased the property and moved in. As we do not use the air conditioning system very often, we initially put up with the noise.
In July 2026, I decided to contact Daikin Australia (NSW office) to report the issue. About 10 days later, a technician attended the property. He spent only a few minutes inspecting the system from an access opening upstairs and concluded that the noise was caused by poor installation. He took two photos showing squashed ducting near the return-air grille and a short video of the inside of the ceiling where the fan is located. He completed the job report online and forwarded it to me.
I specifically asked him to inspect the fan because I suspected that it was the source of the noise. He had only a quick look and then told me that there was no access to the other side of the fan, and that Daikin did not have the insurance coverage required for him to access that area. As a result, I paid a call-out fee for an inspection that did not identify the actual cause of the problem.
I then contacted a local air conditioning company for a second inspection and to see whether there was a possible solution. Their technician went into the roof space, spent about an hour investigating the system, removed the cover of the indoor fan, and determined that the fan itself was making the noise.
He then gave me several options, including replacing the fan at a significant cost, carrying out a full maintenance service costing nearly $1,000, followed by annual maintenance. I decided to pay only the call-out fee as the offer of all services are outregesly expensive. I also believe I should not have needed to pay for a second inspection if the Daikin technician had properly inspected the fan in the first place.
I am now in a very awkward situation. If I spend thousands of dollars replacing the fan, I am concerned that the underlying poor installation—including the squashed ducting—may continue to put excessive strain on the system. The same problem could potentially occur again within another two or three years.
Given the circumstances, I am now considering whether it would be more sensible to install a couple of split-system air conditioners instead (Not Delkin Brand), Split systems would generally last for many years and may avoid the ongoing problems associated with this ducted system.
My main concern is why Daikin would certify or approve installers who carry out such poor ducted air conditioning installations. I would expect a ducted system to be properly designed and installed in accordance with Daikin's requirements, including appropriate duct sizing, airflow and installation standards.
If the current faults and excessive noise are the result of poor installation, I believe Daikin should take greater responsibility for the situation. I would appreciate Daikin explaining why this system was installed in this manner, whether the original installation complied with Daikin's installation requirements, and what responsibility Daikin is prepared to take for correcting the problems.
