Working at Dollar General can be a very difficult experience, mainly because of understaffing and the number of responsibilities placed on each employee.

Although the company presents itself as an organization that values its employees, in practice, many stores operate with insufficient labor hours. It is common to see store managers and assistant managers working alone for part of the day, having to simultaneously cover the register, stock merchandise, assist customers, organize the store, and handle other administrative responsibilities.

It is also common for employees to be hired as cashiers but spend much of their time stocking, while assistant managers spend a large portion of their shifts working the register. Everyone should be willing to collaborate and perform different duties when necessary, but there is a difference between teamwork and constantly operating with insufficient staff.

To maintain a clean, organized store and provide good customer service, I believe proper staffing is essential. Ideally, every shift should have at least one person primarily dedicated to the register and a manager, assistant manager, or Lead Sales Associate available to handle the store’s other responsibilities. When one person is expected to cover several positions at the same time, customer service, cleanliness, stocking, and the overall experience of both employees and customers inevitably suffer.

Another major concern is security. Theft can be frequent, and understaffing makes it even more difficult to prevent losses or properly monitor what is happening in the store. The company should review its loss-prevention practices and place greater emphasis on the safety of employees and customers rather than expecting stores to operate with minimal staffing.

The hourly pay also does not seem proportional to the workload and level of responsibility expected from many positions, including cashiers, Leads, and assistant managers.

I also believe management training needs improvement—not only in store operations and performance, but also in leadership, workplace ethics, communication, and respectful treatment of employees. A healthy work environment depends greatly on how employees are managed and treated.

Dollar General is a large corporation with a significant presence and a wide variety of merchandise, and many of its stores have the potential to provide an excellent experience. However, consistently operating with minimal staffing negatively affects everyone: employees become overworked, stores become harder to maintain, checkout lines get longer, and customers receive less efficient service.

The company could significantly improve both the employee and customer experience by investing in more staffing hours, better wages, stronger leadership training, and more effective security and loss-prevention measures. A company cannot realistically expect stores to remain clean, organized, safe, and provide excellent customer service when one or two employees are expected to do the work of an entire team.

After not going to DG for a couple of years due to pricing accuracy issues, I did a couple of times recently. Done again with them. Same issue in two different stores, roughly half the items rang up incorrectly. Sent an email to corporate to express my displeasure and as expected, they never sent a reply. Why is there not a class action against this company for consumer fraud?

A Saturday visit to our local D.G. Market is something of a weekly ritual. Today, at checkout, I presented a $10 off $30 purchase coupon we received last wee.. It wouldn't work. There was a printed notice at the register indicating there was a problem with them. There was, of course, no remedy.;

Well Dollar General built a brand new DG market not far from my house. I've been there a few times. The first time I went I was using my rollator walker. I got to the register and had some items to purchase on my seat section of my walker. I was having a hard time standing but the manager was almost done ringing up a customer so I waited. When she got done ringing him up she left the register and went over to her friend and started playing with her baby. I got quit upset and started to throw my items on the floor and tell them they must not want my business but I didn't because I had already suffered enough pain getting the items I already had. I had to go to the other register to get checked out..
Also DG needs to build a break area or something for the employees to smoke at instead of by the front door. I know I hate smelling it .

Cheating your customers is a crime and punishment should be on its way.

Employee was knowledgeable on where the spray paint was in the store. I bet i could have asked her anything and she would have known where it was. Super helpful and it was a delightful shopping experience. Thank you

Too many questions on the debit card machine it's crazy

I’m shopping at Dollar General on Suesex anve in Pittsburgh Pa 15226 zip code was wondering about the cashier Amy you have is no longer there. She kept me happy. Her energy was high and she had good music bring her back on the team this store is very neat and clean

No stars. I was in the store today at 4:39pm and was told by the cashier named James that the manager was fired for stealing money put of the register. This is confidently information which should not be being told to customers - very unprofessional and could lead to a lawsuit for the fired manager against the store. I was also in there the day before and heard James telling the other cashier Eli he was sorry he didn't relive him on time. Eli response was that he missed out on serving someone - serving is undercover for selling drugs. So we have cashier spreading confidential information and selling drugs out of the store and the parking lot. HR needs to fire the entire staff and start over. The manager they had was awesome, but these two guys will only corrupt the store like it was before they hired the last manager. Back to poor customer service and more drugs being distributed than your products. Nothing is in the store either.

The assistant store manager Harold makes you feel very welcome and will go out of his way to help his customers. I absolutely recommend the store in blountville tn on highway 75.

Store is much more organized and doesn’t feel over crowded.

I've been to 3 Dollar Generals this week finally the 3rd one could add money to my cash app card, thank you Holly Springs Dollar General, not only was the system down at 2 of them, I noticed most cashiers only know how to only add it with the phone, they don't know how to add it with the card

The DG in Sipsey Alabama has made a major turn for the good. This store stunk, was nasty and you couldn't get through the isle 's. I started going to another location because of how bad it was. I went in there today and it has completely been rearranged, smelt good, was clean and very organized. The lady waited on me was very pleasant and was working hard to get this store back on track. She deserves a raise and whom ever is working with her. Please keep up the good work.

location hwy 211 winder, GA. how many stars below one? store messy, outside displays I aisles, no one to answer questions. had to interrupt smoke half/hour to get someone to check me out.

Great small store to have around for small items you need but don't count on discounts offered on discount table. You get charged full price even after mentioning the discount to the clerk. She mentioned you can't always count on discount offered on discount table items. Go Figure??

I shop at surrounding Dollar General stores and I run into the same issue lately, where the advertised price is not what you pay at checkout. Today when I brought it to the clerk’s attention he said it was just a little change. Example cereal are listed two for 6.00 dollars that are priced at 3.85 a box. Again this happens all the time

Clerk tried 3 times to get my $10 off $40 today, spent $55 without my coupon. Come on DG

Have always loved DG. Used to shop there 2-3 times a week. Suffered illness about 3 years ago and could no longer go. I went today. Don’t get me wrong, I realize things are terribly expensive everywhere. However I found DG to be extremely high on prices for food and pretty much everything I looked at. It can’t be lack of business. There is always a lot of people shopping and it takes forever to checkout.

Site is impossible to navigate. Coupons were not honored. When I asked why to cashiers they were nasty and surly 😠! WOW! I WILL NEVER GO TO ANOTHER DOLLAR GENERAL STORE! MAIN STREET, CAMBRIDGE MN.55008.

I have never had an issue with staff.

But prices are an issue.

Farwell Michigan is a small town and we have 4 Dollar General stores, 2 in town, 2 in the next town, all very close.

There are also several Mom and Pop stores.

If Dollar General is priced the same, people will go to the Mom and Pops.

Biggest sellers are going to be snacks (Chips), candy and pop (Pepsi and Coke).

People will stick with Mom and Pop
unless you have a deal they can't pass up.

They will also not go to more than one store.

If they need groceries and pop is on the list, the local gets all the sale.

If the pop and snacks is a real good deal at Dollar General, then they go there for all they need in one run.

Dollar General is taking up a lot of space and getting very little for it.
