Dehumanising and Incompetent
I am genuinely angry writing this, because what my wife experienced at Dorevitch Pathology Fairfield was not just inconvenient or careless, it was dehumanising, thoughtless, and completely unacceptable.
We attended this clinic to undertake a 24‑hour urine test. The staff looked at the referral, looked at the tests required, and handed us what appeared to be a 3‑litre juice container with a tiny ~2cm opening. That was it. No instructions. No transfer container. No funnel. No explanation. Nothing.
We left, confused and stunned, assuming we must be missing something, surely there must be additional equipment or written instructions in the bag. There was nothing.
Let me be very clear: it is physically unrealistic, unsafe, and humiliating to expect someone with a vagina to urinate directly into a large 3‑litre jug with a tiny opening. This should not need explaining to any medical professional. Even as a male, I know that this is not how human anatomy works.
Because Dorevitch Pathology Fairfield gave us zero guidance, we were forced to Google how to perform the test ourselves. The fact that a medical diagnostic company left patients to figure this out via the internet is staggering.
I returned to the Fairfield clinic, waited 30 minutes, and asked how my wife was expected to use this container. The response was shocking, the staff member gestured with her hands and demonstrated that my wife should squat and shove the large 3‑litre jug between her legs and “just pee into it.”
That was it. No acknowledgement of how ridiculous or undignified this was. No alternative offered.
I left, stunned, and went to a chemist, who, unlike this pathology clinic, showed basic human understanding and competence. They helped me find a universal device so my wife could urinate comfortably and safely, and we could then use to transfer into the jug.
But it gets worse.
The following day, we attended Dorevitch Pathology Northcote (we did not want to go back to Fairfield) to submit the sample and complete other tests. They reviewed the referral and immediately told us that the container Fairfield gave us was wrong. We had completed the incorrect 24‑hour urine test.
At this point, my wife broke down in tears.
She had already been made to feel humiliated, unsupported, and dismissed and now we found out that the Fairfield clinic hadn’t even provided the correct container in the first place. The emotional toll of this was enormous and completely avoidable.
In stark contrast, the team at Dorevitch Pathology Northcote were outstanding. They were apologetic, compassionate, and competent. They provided the correct container, supplied a transfer cup, gave a funnel, provided clear, printed instructions, treated my wife like a human being who deserves dignity. This is the minimum standard of care. This is what Fairfield failed so spectacularly to provide.
Dorevitch Pathology Fairfield demonstrated a complete lack of, basic understanding of female anatomy, clinical competence, empathy or patient dignity.
No one, especially someone already dealing with a lot in their lives, should be subjected to this level of incompetence and humiliation.
Avoid Dorevitch Pathology Fairfield.
If you must go to Dorevitch, go to Northcote, where they actually seem to understand both medicine and humanity.
