When we came to the airport in Pico island there were no one there, despite being after opening hours, so it was impossible to deliver our keys. They did not respond at the phone or any other contact methods either. The worst.

Nous avons séjourné trois semaines aux Açores (Flores, Faial, Pico et São Miguel) — une destination magnifique, découverte grâce à l'office de tourisme lors d'un salon. Ce voyage restera pourtant gâché par les pratiques de l'agence de location Ilha Verde à São Miguel.

À la restitution du véhicule, aucune réserve n'a été émise. 40 jours plus tard, l'agence a procédé à un prélèvement unilatéral de 300 € sur notre carte bancaire, invoquant un choc que nous n'avons jamais causé.

Nous avons adressé un courrier recommandé et plusieurs e-mails. Aucune réponse. Ce silence délibéré face à une facturation contestée constitue, selon nous, une pratique frauduleuse.

Il semblerait que ce comportement touche d'autres clients sur l'île. Fuyez cette agence. Si vous êtes victime d'une pratique similaire, signalez-la : ensemble, nous avons plus de poids pour faire valoir nos droits.

Vi lejede en bil på Azorerne igennem booking dot com og alt var bare super godt 😊
Vi fik en Ford Puma med automatgear fuldstændig som vi havde booket. Bilen fungerede 100% og var lækker ren da vi hentede den. Alt foregik nemt og hurtigt.
Da vi afleverede gik der en dag, så var mit depositum på 12.000 kr. ikke længere reserveret på mit Mastercard 👍🏼
Vi betalte 1380 kr for bilen i en uge i påsken og det var en god pris.
Vi bruger dem gerne igen 🤗

WE ASKED FOR MAX PROTECTION SO WE COULD AVOID ANY TROUBLE BUT THE INSURANCE DOES NOT COVER THE BOTTOM PART OF THE CAR(VERY STRANGE),ON OUR LAST NIGHT WE GOT OUR FUEL STOLEN(ALSO STRANGE COINCEDENCE), THEY TRIED FROM THE POMP ENTRANCE BUT THEN THEY CUT LE TUBE UNDERNEATH THE CAR ,SO THIS DAMAGE WAS NOT ONLY AGAINST OUR WILL BUT WE ALSO SUFFERED A "THEFT""!!OF COURSE THE COMPANY AFFERMS THAT THIS DAMAGE WILL NOT BE COVERED AND THIS COSTED US 1.643,00€!!!!WHEN WE FINALLY GOT TO THE AIRPORT,WE WERE INFORMED THAT THIS SAME THEFT HAPPENED TO OTHER TURISTS LEAVING THAT MORNING( STRANGE COINCIDENCE!!)

Expérience mixte (voire bof) avec Ilha Verde
Nous avons loué quatre voitures lors de notre séjour aux Açores: deux à Terceira (lors de notre arrivée et notre départ), une à Faial et une à Pico.

La personne (une jeune femme blonde avec des lunettes) à Angra do Heroismo (ville) était ADORABLE et super arrangeante et le rendu à l’aéroport était très facile (le monsieur a mis deux secondes pour tout vérifier). De même à Pico, tout nickel et les personnes étaient serviables et souriantes.
En revanche, la personne au port de Horta (une jeune fille brune) était désagréable au possible, mais c’était sans compter notre expérience à l’aéroport de Terceira qui a rebattu toutes les cartes. La personne (une femme blonde avec des lunettes marrons) était antipathique, mais était également malhonnête en essayant à tout pris de nous refiler une assurance HORS DE PRIX qui est inutile, sachant que nous avons fait la réservation deux secondes après avec booking et cela nous a fait économiser 35 euros (en basse saison, pour 1 jour de location).

Donc conseil: passez absolument par booking et non par le guichet, où l’on vous vendra une assurance aberrante et on essaiera de vous arnaquer.

PS.: préparer votre compte bancaire pour la caution car on est INCAPABLE de vous informer correctement si les 1500€ de caution (à chaque location) seront débités ou non.

PPS.: privilégiez les Clio neuves qui sont bien mieux que les anciennes et surtout qui sont plus sûres que les autres dans un état douteux.

Es wurde zweimal die Miete abgebucht, einmal von Autoeurope und einmal von Ilha Verde. Vor Ort wird man am Schalter unter Druck gesetzt. Danach vom Kundenservice auf AutoEurope verwiesen. Man könnte meinen, dass das eine gezielte Masche ist, um Kunden doppelt abzukassieren. Nie wieder!

Escroquerie aux Açores chez le loueur de voitures Ilha Verde : comment UNE journée de location achetée 30 E sur booking.com vous coûtera 13 fois plus!

Déjà mauvais accueil le 16 octobre 2025 au comptoir Ilha Verde alors désert du petit aéroport de Horta, avec une surprise : l'employée de ce loueur - en position dominante aux Açores - finit par apparaître mais ne daigne pas venir voir le véhicule attribué, soutenant qu'il est impeccable et le plein fait, bien qu'on la prie de venir constater que c'est faux, comme le montrent les photos que je prends alors !
Mais au retour de ce seul jour de location, après un kilométrage dérisoire vu la petitesse de l’île de Horta, c'est bien elle qui cette fois nous attend sur leur parking pour examiner attentivement la voiture. Ne trouvant rien à reprocher, elle affirme à tort que le plein est moins parfait qu'au départ, exige le règlement injustifié et immédiat de 28 € soit 15 litres d'essence, et manque nous faire perdre notre vol avec cette première embrouille.
Mais elle ne nous fait alors aucun autre reproche, ni ne nous appelle durant notre longue attente d'embarquement (vol retardé) à 50 mètres d'elle, l'aéroport étant minuscule.
Or quatre heures plus tard, Ilha Verde nous envoie un mail nous reprochant un prétendu accrochage sur la route - suite auquel la police nous aurait poursuivis en vain et le leur aurait signalé par téléphone 'quelques minutes après notre discussion à leur comptoir'. Devant cette impossibilité matérielle, nous pressentons une arnaque et mettons leur contact en 'indésirable'.
Deux jours plus tard, autre mail, très différent : cette fois c'est en stationnant que nous aurions embouti le pare-chocs arrière (en fait seulement éraflé, et cela bien avant notre location) devant témoin (non-identifié) avec en appui un 'rapport de police' manifestement bricolé et prélève sur mon compte 387 € pour une prétendue ´réparation’. Si vite effectuée ? Et sans aucun dommage sur l'autre véhicule prétendument embouti ?! - le tout accompagné de la MÊME photo de 'mon' pare-chocs éraflé que j'avais prise à la réception du véhicule...
Trois mois plus tard, Ilha Verde refuse encore tout remboursement et ne reconnaît même pas d'erreur'.
Nous préparons le dépôt d'une plainte pour cette escroquerie avérée et pour tromperie sur la marchandise : UNE journée de location vendue 30 E sur booking vous coûte finalement 13 fois plus..
Il semble que l'entreprise soit coutumière de telles manières, et clients et touristes devraient en être prévenus : un loueur A FUIR, d’autant plus que nous avons recouru à 3 autres loueurs durant nos 3 semaines aux belles AÇORES sans le moindre problème !

Don't even try to ask me to email customerservice at ilhaverde com - this was done and no response received.

Damage on the wheel rim and the tire is shown on the photo I've taken prior to driving the rented vehicle (Dec 24th at 8-13 am local time - Azores); find pictures attached. Note - the rim damage as even noted on the original contract after I pointed it out to your rep!
The invoice also charges me for baby seat, which was already prepaid at the counter on Dec 24th: find credit card payment proof attached
At the very least in addition to a refund I expect a formal apology from the regional manager.
Ideally I expect not to be charged for the original rental given the circumstances that transpired: it's your company representative's fault that I've driven away on torn tire.

If this email is not responded to and refund for the amount charged for damages is issued within next 2 business days I will be forced to proceed as follows:

Submit a complaint with European Car Rental Conciliation Service
Submit a complaint with Direção-Geral do Consumidor (DGC)
Submit a formal complaint to the US Attorney General. When enough of these complaints pile up: it'll affect your company.

Lastly, I will submit a dispute with my Credit Card bank (JP Morgan Chase), clearing showing the pictures of pre-existing damages and the rental documentation.

No recomiendo esta empresa bajo ninguna circunstancia. Han emitido una factura por supuestos “daños” con importes completamente desorbitados y no han proporcionado ninguna prueba ni documentación, a pesar de haberlo solicitado reiteradamente.
Además, han cargado mi tarjeta sin autorización y siguen intentando hacerlo, incluso mientras el asunto está en disputa.
Su comportamiento es absolutamente inaceptable, carece totalmente de transparencia y demuestra un desprecio total hacia el cliente.

Nach der Landung schnell sein lohnt sich! Gleich am LINKEN Schalter anstellen (der rechte ist nur für Rückgaben). Sehr sauberes und einwandfrei fahrtüchtiges Auto erhalten. Vorschäden an Lack und Karosserie bei Entgegennahme unbedingt lückenlos selber dokumentieren oder
fotografieren, am besten filmen. Die vom Mitarbeiter auf dem Parkplatz angefertigte Skizze mit Kreuzen taugt nicht als Nachweis im Ernstfall.

Ich kann die vielen negativen Bewertungen nicht verstehen. Am Abholtag in Ponta Delgada waren wir die zweiten am Schalter. Bei Sixt eine große Warteschlange. Wir bekamen das Auto, was uns Check 24 angeboten hatte. Wenig km , sauber und modern. Beim Zustandsbericht wurden gemeinsam alle Schäden aufgenommen und wir konnten starten. Bei der Rückgabe lief der Mitarbeiter einmal ums Auto, checkte den Benzinstand und das wars. Dass keine weiteren Mängel zu beanstanden waren, ließen wir uns auf dem Protokoll schriftlich bestätigen. Die Kaution wurde kurzfristig wieder freigegeben.

Ils veulent vous facturer 31€ si vous rendez la voiture avant 5h30 le matin ... c'est comprehensible si l'agence était fermée mais ce n'était pas le cas, ils ouvrent à 5h, ils vous nargent et les voitures s'accumulent car il faut attendre 5h30 ou sinon vous payez, une honte ce loueur à fuir.
Ils se foutent que vous avez un avion à prendre.

Horrible Horrible experience. This was in São Jorge island. I booked my rental over 5 months ahead through priceline and Avis. Ilha Verde was the representative. If they had a zero that's what it would be. It started out OK. The initial process with Monica. Then I followed Fábio to see the car and go through the inspection. We get there there was a HUGE scrap dent on the side car was dirty inside. I say to him in Portuguese this car is unacceptable it's embarrassing to drive in this condition he doesn't even acknowledge me. So I said In English I can't take that vehicle. He says this is the only one we have IF YOU DON'T TAKE IT YOU WILL HAVE TO WALK BY FOOT. I walk back to the rental station to talk to Monica she said that was the last car they had. Fábio walks back and repeats in front of her and my wife again what he said outside 2 times. I was so angry my wife stepped in to calm things down. I was traveling with my sister in-law and husband so I didn't really have a choice. If it was just me and my wife I would had refused the car and got my money back and use a taxi to get around. AVOID

Zum ersten und letzten Mal eine Anmietung bei diesem Unternehmen. Das ist Abzocke pur. Erst eine Forderung einer Kaution in Höhe von 2100€. Als wir die als viel zu hoch bewerteten und nicht verstehen konnten, zumal davon keine Zahl oder ein Wort dazu in den Vertragsunterlagen stand, gab es die Alternative einer vollständigen Versicherung (die aber im Vertrag bereits enthalten war) und dann keine Kaution erforderte.
Wir selbst hatten keinen Einfluss auf den Anbieter zur Autovermietung, da dies unser Reiseveranstalter organisiert hatte.

Terrible Experience – Dishonest Deposit Charges

I had a terrible experience with this rental company. My Peugeot 208 was slightly damaged during a theft attempt. ILHA VERDE own policy clearly stated I was covered for theft and damage with a maximum excess of €200.

Despite this, they withheld £702.87 from my deposit, claiming a part called the “control stalk” (manípulo de luzes) cost €574.71 — even though it costs no more than €50 retail. They also added admin and repair fees on top.

When I disputed the charge, they changed their story, saying the entire set (bloco de comando) needed replacing — which was unnecessary. Even then, the cost doesn’t justify what they charged.

This goes against their own terms. They inflated repair costs and ignored the protection I was promised. I feel scammed and would strongly advise others to avoid this company.

Achtung vor diesem Mietwagenverleih am Flughafen in Ponto Delgada (Sao Miguel)! Unbedingt bei der Übernahme jeden kleinsten Kratzer fotografieren - besser noch filmen! Wenn man dies nicht getan hat wollen sie einen für einen nicht begangenen Schaden verantwortlich machen! Wir haben es leider nicht selbst dokumentiert. Zahlreiche Schäden und Kratzer rund ums Auto, unprofessioneller Mitarbeiter zeichnet irgendwie die Schäden an, und bei der Rückgabe wird man dann für eine Delle belangt, die schon vorhanden war. Reinste Abzocke und ist uns noch nie davor passiert, obwohl wir weltweit Leihautos mieten.

SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE
We arrived at Rent-a-Car Ilha Verde at 13:39 and completed check-in smoothly. We were then directed to the parking area to receive the car and a baby seat (<10kg). We waited nearly an hour. The first seat provided was unsafe, unsuitable for our baby's weight, and lacked instructions, brand, or model information. We refused it.
A second, identical seat was offered and also refused. We were told there were no other options. After several calls, a third option — a baby carrier — was presented, but it was also inappropriate. No instructions were provided at any point.
By 16:30, after almost three hours without a safe solution, we turned to another company that provided a compliant and secure seat. None of the options from Ilha Verde met the minimum safety standards required by law.

Versão PT: Falha Grave de Segurança

Chegámos à Rent-a-Car Ilha Verde às 13h39 e fomos encaminhados para o estacionamento para receber o carro e uma cadeira de bebé (<10kg). Esperámos cerca de uma hora. A primeira cadeira entregue era inadequada, sem instruções, marca ou modelo, e não cumpria os requisitos mínimos de segurança. Recusámos.
A segunda cadeira era igual à primeira. Após várias tentativas, foi-nos apresentado um ovo de bebé, também impróprio. Às 16h30, sem solução segura, recorremos a outra empresa que garantiu uma cadeira adequada e legal.
Nenhuma das opções fornecidas pela Ilha Verde cumpria os requisitos mínimos de segurança rodoviária infantil exigidos por lei.

One star is even too positive. A long queue because they are not organisede, not well prepared. They create chaos. Waiting time more than 1 hour, for an in advance reservation car, all data like licence, ID and creditcardnumber were there already they retype everything, at least 10 minutes. Search for the car in the dark, with an inaccurate indicating where to find. Manager not supportive, and not problem solving oriented.

When I read other reviews (after signing the contract), I got a bit scared. But our experience was nothing but good!

What we liked:
- Easy booking
- Nice people at the car park, to take/give back the car. When we arrived, they even gave us some tips about upcoming events on the island.
- All bumps and scratches got duely noted when we took the car (even without asking), so no scheming to make us pay for existing damages
- We had a problem with our first car (the battery was dead), and the war was replaced within the hour by a very nice gentleman
- Overall all very pleasant and efficient interactions, even when we had a problem with a car

Extra information:
- We rented a car for 2 weeks in August
- We took an insurance with full coverage
- We stayed at about 40min from Ponta Delgada

La atención en el aeropuerto a la recojida y entrega fue buena. Lo malo es que pasados 10 dias de la devolución del vehículo no han devuelto todavia el depósito dejado de 200€ aunque en la devolución todo fue bien. Ni tampoco reclsmándosela por correo con los documentos de prueba. Recomiendo guardar copias de todos los papeles, también del de entrega del vehículo. Poco serios y ágiles en esto, no obstante de que el coche se alquiló bastante caro.
