I cannot recommend Pilling & Co highly enough.

I am a Malta resident and had been trying for quite some time to sell a substantial holding of HSBC shares that I held in the form of a physical UK share certificate.

What made the situation particularly difficult was that most of the large online brokers I contacted were unable to accept the paper certificate or deal with the CREST requirements. I spent a considerable amount of time trying to find a broker who could assist, without success.

I eventually contacted Pilling & Co, and I am so glad I did.

From the very beginning, Jude was incredibly helpful, efficient and professional. He explained exactly what was required, provided the necessary documentation and guided me through the process clearly and patiently. Whenever I had a question, Jude responded promptly and made sure I understood what I needed to do.

As I was dealing with this from Malta, there were additional complications, but Jude was extremely accommodating and made the whole process remarkably straightforward. He was always approachable and went out of his way to help, which made a huge difference after the difficulties I had experienced with other brokers.

I sent my original HSBC share certificate and all the required documentation to Pilling by courier, and they successfully completed the sale.

The entire experience was efficient, professional and reassuring from start to finish.

The government created a child trust fund for me when I was a few years old with £250. Checked on it when I was 18 and there £3300 in there. Cleary exceptionally people working here considering what friends my age had received from other establishments that managed their funds. Plus the phone call with them was exceptional, no hassle, no headache, just straight to the point. Highly recommend.

Similar to the experience others have reported regarding the CTF, ours has been frustrating and poorly managed. Communication has been almost non-existent, only occurring when I chased them directly. There were no statements provided, and no contact was made when my son turned 18.
After completing all the required steps to withdraw the funds, my son received an email a week later claiming they needed a bank statement from the last three months, despite the fact that these had already been submitted. My son had taken photos of all documents sent, so he could confirm everything was correctly provided.

It feels as though they are deliberately making the withdrawal process difficult. To add to the disappointment, the fund’s performance under Pilling & Co has been underwhelming, and their fees are high.

This company is terrible for your child trust fund. They charge a lot of commission, the investment outcome is poor, communication is terrible. You need to fight to extract any information from them- there is no annual update/ login to check yourself (they used to be online access but they cut that off; it only had a one line figure, they would not allow you to track what funds were put in each year and the gains/losses; this would have shown you the poor performance and the significant commission they charge).

At 18, they have not contacted my child to let them know how ( as they say they will) the size of the fund. I rang and they promised to send it but they still didn't. They expect your child to research themselves before they turn 18 how to get their money, and then to fill in an online form. It then took a week to reply by email saying we received your form can you confirm you want your money back ( replies immediately yes - doh, this is what your form was for and it was filled in) and then took a week to reply to that email to say there will be another 2 weeks until you can get your money.

This isn't what a child wants to have to go through on their 18th birthday, this should be a nice thing to experience, not fight to extract information they are required to provide and get your money from them (and they charge a lot of commission and fees to get your money out at 18).

My other children certainly had a hugely more positive experience with other companies who contacted them, sent annual account updates, couldn't be more helpful guiding a young person as to the options they have with their money all proactively and leaving the your person feeling involved and informed.

I would never, ever ever consider these guys for any of my family financial matters.

Fantastic service
Answer the phone within 2 rings; always incredibly polite and efficient. Have tried many brokers but these guys are by far and a way the best. Signed up my kids' ISAs with them too.

DO NOT TRUST YOUR CHILDS CTF TO PILLINGS & CO STOCKBROKERS Ltd
The government allocated my child’s CTF in 2007 to Pilings & Co. In 2021 I looked at Pillings & Co and what had happened to his £250. Pillings & Co looked like it was steaming ahead and sounded very promising, ‘promising the earth’. So, I put all his Halifax savings in and £100 per month by standing order into his CTF.
I looked at it again in May this year and discovered it had lost £524.92 and the fund had been handed over to a third party. I immediately ceased the standing order and requested closure of the account. This took time as they then had to sell all the shares which came back with a loss of approx. £694. They even charged £65.07 for commission.
True, I did have correspondence with your administration manager but nothing came of it and he just highlighted that a loss had occurred from bad investment of my child’s CTF and you've received a lower cost than what was invested originally and then on top of that you have the cheek to charge me a commission fee for losing the money. It's all wrong!

the government allocated my 3 boys trust funds to different companies. When I came to look at them all pilling had grown my oldest sons fund considerably more, I have subsequently transferred both other sons trust funds and will use them for an ISA for my oldest once he turns 18 and a pension service for me.

In c2010 I took out a CTF for my kids with Pilling & Co. I had read about them in the FT, and they seemed to be one of the better locations for these savings. I particularly wanted a CTF that gave possible growth from China. I now receive a statement, noting that of the c£XX,000 invested since 2010, almost 90% has been sitting in cash, doing nothing. To say that their lack of focus is lamentable, would probably mask the fact that its close to failure to treat customers fairly. I'll be withdrawing the CTF in the next few days, and re-investing with a more proactive provider.
