No stars—but I had to choose one.

What went wrong...? Oh, Red Roof Inn (Duncan, SC), how can you fail so miserably?

Where do I begin?

Do I tell about the dead bugs in each and every corner, including in the bathroom? Or grime (no, not dust—grime) on the surfaces of—well, on every surface. Really. For example, the 1990s-something table lamps... their formidable bases may have had someone pay attention to them a few years ago, but that's just a rough guess. But, then again, I do see the benefit of dust and grime as a layer to protect the brass.

The floor—wow. Laminate flooring. Okay, I'll give them that. The caveat is that this flooring material needs consistent and thorough cleaning. Not sweeping. Proper, good old-fashioned cleaning. The condition of the floor was so bad that I went to the nearest store to buy a Swiffer-like mop and wet cleaning pads. As it turned out, I used up all ten of the pre-moistened cleaning pads in the package in order to clean the entire room, the vanity area and the bathroom. I have photos to prove how absolutely disgustingly cruddy (a fitting term) the wet cleaning pads were as I changed them out. I have figured out that the dark "wood-tone" color of the laminate perfectly disguises the same color that was picked up on the cleaning pads. Upon my showing them to one of the staff, the response was (paraphrasing here): "Well, if you stay in the room more than one night, the floors will look like that." Uhmmm...okay. This was the first day. That single response spoke volumes about the absence of qualified management, their hiring practices, and the shameful lack of training hospitality workers.

The photos I have taken of the neglectful condition of my hotel room, including the linen (did I mention mildew spots on the mattress cover?) will be submitted to other review sites, not because I think the owner/manager will remedy any of this, but because I believe the general public needs to be aware that anyone in poor health or with dustmite allergies potentially may be at a health risk if they choose to stay here.

Now, the question you've been asking: Why did I stay here? Simply because we were flooded out of our home due to Hurricane Helene and needed an immediate place to 'live'. FEMA generously provided us financial assistance, for which I feel grateful. Unfortunately, this Red Roof Inn was listed as one of the nearest hotels approved to accept FEMA's transitional housing vouchers, to which I now want to say:

Dear FEMA,
Please verify the hotels are safe and clean before listing them as being safe and clean. Maybe you can stay in one to be sure.

I live at the red roof inn Lexington south location, and my experience here has been absolutely horrible. The rooms carpets are so caked in dirt that if you pour water on them and dry it with a towel that towel will turn black as if there is car oil in them. My shower curtain is barely hanging onto the wall, there are roaches that come out of the walls the minute the lights are turned out and yet on the weekends they are charging me 100 dollars a night!! I work close by and am waiting for an apartment to open up so I have no choice but to be here and they take complete advantage of that. I spend thousands a month here and they don’t appreciate a bit of it.

Checked in to the Red Roof Inn (Indianapolis NW, not far from Zionsville). The room was dark, dingy, and filthy. ‘White’ towels were grey and stained. Toilet wouldn’t flush completely. Holes in walls; looked like someone took a hammer to them. It also looked like the door may have been kicked in at some point. Seemed like sketchy area of town. Take my word, I have stayed in some run down places between Tok, Alaska and Pittsburgh, PA. (I make the trip usually once a year.). I have never been in one worse than this one.
I didn’t unpack. I went back to the desk and told the man I would be needing a refund. He offered another room, but I didn’t think it would be any better. He willingly refunded the whole amount so I appreciate that.
I wish I could post photos for you to see and judge for yourself.
Do hotels/motels have to surpass a certain standard to earn the name Red Roof Inn? If the answer is yes. I will never book one again.

I was on the sixth floor, small quaint room, nothing special, only stayed one night. Parking was pricey.

There was poop on the toilet seat & standing water in the bottom of the frig; I paid extra for that! The room was very small and not updated. Someone opened the door to my locked room from the outside twice!!! It was hard to get a good night sleep with this kind of stuff going on. I would not stay there again and I would not recommend this Red Roof Inn to anyone.

We made the reservation for the Red Roof Inn near the airport in Charlotte NC. We got there and had the confirmation email and the guy at the front desk couldn't find the reservation and said we had to reserve the room again thru the website. It was a sketchy place anyway so we booked another hotel. Tried for two days to get up with the Red Roof hotel manager as they charged my card for a night that we didn't stay and could never get up with the “manager.” Ive disputed the charge on my bank card rather than trying to get up with Red Roof Inn. They need to be shut down and condemned. This company is a disgrace. I gave them one star but it wasn’t worth that. Will never ever deal with this chain again.

Stayed at Red Roof 2450 Dryden Rd Dayton OH Saturday Aug 3rd. Everything was new and redone, including Floor, furniture and AC. Great stay for the price, nice people running it too!

stayed at a Red Roof in Monee, IL -- it was clean, well kept, beds very comfortable, quiet, staff very helpful. An excellent place to stay.

I have been staying at redroof since they were motel 6 they really care about their guests they try to accommodate your every need sometimes ppl have financial problems as we have during our stay an they were very understanding an allowed us a few days come with our remaining balance as long as we keep our word I really appreciated that they are very kind friendly attentive very down to earth on down to the house keepers an maintenance man they treat you almost like family lol I would recommend redroof to friends & family hopefully my stay here will be over soon but I can say I enjoyed my time at red roof inn an I give 5 stars RM 105

We didn't have any hot water to take showers, and our friends got offered a room that smelled really bad of smoke. No refund for the nights we stayed. Don't stay there not worth the cheap price. Guildford, CT Location

Amenities offered was not honored. The hotel refused to do anything about it but give our money back. Also the room was not ready and we had to pay extra for another room. This is very unacceptable.

The red roof inn will take your points off your account and then they try to beat you getting mad. And when I call them they will keep you on hold I've been on hold for 25 minutes WOW I will never use them anymore..👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿

This red roof Inn was the worst I’ve ever stayed at really dirty cockroach on our clothing in the morning and a huge cockroach in the bathroom crawling up the wall lights didn’t work over the sink peeling leather off the chair that was there. I felt like I was staying in a drug hotel. I’ll never stay there again. This is not always the case with red roof inns We’ve stayed at others that are nice. We mostly stayed there because they’re pet friendly. This is the Memphis East location and it was terrible, the next day when I lost my credit cards and we called back to see if maybe we dropped him in the room. They hung the phone up on us. We were just asking a question. Just terrible service all the way around we’re not even comfortable either I can’t say anything about this good

The room was filthy. The beds were almost completely broken down. Room smelled of smoke. People partying outside and cars playing loud music late at night. I asked for a refund to go someplace else but the clerk refused. It was a terrible experience. This Red Roof Inn is on Eisenhower Blv, Harrisburg, Pa.

I RECENTLY STAYED AT THE HOMETOWNE SUITES BY REDROOF INN IN CONCORDE NC AND THEY STAY WAS HORRIBLE. THE HOTEL REAKED OF MILDEW SMELL AND THE ROOM WAS FILTHY THE TUB HAD A RING AROUND IT. THE ROOM CAME WITH A DOUBLE BED AND 1 OF THE BEDS BROKE WHILE MY MOM WAS LAYING IN IT. I WENT UP TO THE FRONT DESK AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE BECAUSE THEY WAS SOLD OUT. THE FRONT DESK STAFF ADVISED ME THAT SHE WOULD REACH OUT TO THE MANGER TO SEE IF ANYTHING COULD BE DONE OR I COULD BE REFUNED. WELL NOONE EVER CALLED ME BACK AND WHEN I REPORTED THIS TO EXPEDIA THEY DENIED MY REFUND. DO NOT STAY HERE I REPEAT DO NOT STAY AT THIS PLACE I AM NOT OUT OF 125 DOLLARS FOR 1 NIGHT AND MY STAY WAS HORRIBLE.

Heinra red roof inn worse place ever. Fighting out side every nite no one ever came to clean the room. The phones are for show the toilet didn't want to flush microwave had no dish in it. The TV was all movies you had to pay for. Prostitute here every nite. The people that own it aren't from our country. So the really don't care. I say close it down for good.

I have stayed at the Red Roof inn in San Angelo, Texas several times. I always had a good experience. Anup is the name of the owner and he is a good man and has given me good deals. But this last time I stayed there was a young man behind the desk. He checked me in and gave me the room key and took care of me BUT when I gave him the money he said he didn't have change. He said the manager took the keys and I would have to wait for him to get back. I have never had a problem trusting them so I said for them to just give me the change in the morning because I'm tired and want to sleep. He said he would leave a note so they know that I have change coming. HE DIDN'T DO IT! So in the morning when I asked for my change the guy at front desk said he didn't know anything about it and he refused to call the young man or the manager. Then he said that only him and the manager work and that there was no young man here. He was saying I was lying. He refused to call the manager and threatened to call the police. I was late for work because of him. So now I will never return and I advise everyone to get a receipt and change right then because they will cheat and rob you if they can.

Flooded bathroom floor. Was given rags to clean it myself. Did not stay or even bring in belongings. Will NOT refund, didn't offer another room.

Customer care useless.
Issue not resolved and money disappeared.
I have had the same issue fixed in minutes with other chain hotels.
Unimpressed and disappointed. Never again.

Mattress was nasty. Brown sweat marks on the mattress. My feet were black from the filthy floors. Pillows lumpy and uncomfortable. This cost over 100 bucks for the night. I do not recommend.
