Insane hot chocolate experience. In a bad way. £4.50 for some decidedly average cocoa and milk - just above lukewarm warm. No whipped cream or options for a child’s hot chocolate. This felt like robbery.

I have ordered both chocolate and ice cream online from Salcombe Dairy on several occasions now and it is always excellent quality and delicious! Per ml the cost of their ice cream is similar to Ben & Jerrys so I do not feel it’s too expensive, and the price of cocoa coupled with them being a small, premium business means their chocolate is going to cost a bit more but to me it’s well worth it - I greatly appreciate all of their products are egg and nut free so safe for my allergies, too. Recently I had an order with an item missing (the first time this has ever happened, so certainly isn’t the norm for them) and they responded to my query within a couple of hours and sent a replacement product which arrived within 48 hours, plus included an extra bar of chocolate which was a nice surprise :) I would highly recommend Salcombe Dairy - particularly their butter caramel chocolates, the milk chocolate with caramel and sea salt bar and their chocolate honeycomb ice cream!

Bought an easter egg well in advance of easter weekend. Tracking was submitted, however I am yet to receive said egg or hear from Salcombe from my communications. pretty poor currently considering the price and the adequate time to deliver.

Edit: Finally received the egg rather late than never.

I purchased 3 bars of chocolate on 9th December 2005 at Winchester Christmas Market at (£7.50 per bar)or £20 for all three. The packaging was very high quality, I found the chocolate ok, but nothing like as special as I'd expect for such a high price. To be honest I think I'd actually prefer Cadbury's fruit and nut to the Salcombe Daries Rasin bar. The difference is Cadbury's 110g bar at £1.84 compares with Salcombe's 75g bar at £7.50. I also bought an Orange bar and it was much better than the rasin bar but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and a Terries Chocolate Orange weighing 145g and costing around £1.75. The Honeycomb was also ok, but in general the quality and value would be far better in the specialist Chocolate Shop in Wickham Square. So a very disappointing experience and we felt ripped off.

I keep trying Salcombe chocolate wanting to find it good, but alas, the chocolate sits in the mouth refusing to melt. My friend said it reminded her of the texture of exlax. Somewhat unkind, but I knew what she meant. Beautifully branded, it will sell because of the branding and origin, but unlike its ice cream, Salcombe dairy has not got their chocolate base right. Please compare how it sits in your mouth with competitors and you will see what I mean.

Top marks to Salcombe Dairy. I ordered a nut free egg for my daughter. There was a problem in transit. Great communication from the SD team (Katie!) to resolve the problem quickly. The egg arrived, beautifully presented and carefully wrapped. Highly recommend both for the quality of product and friendly, helpful, warm customer care.

Proper chocolate. A rare find nowadays and at last a chocolate producer whose chocolate isn’t cross-contaminated with nuts and soya. Good honest ingredients and a fabulous depth of flavour. Texture ever so slightly more crumbly than would be perfect for me but on the whole I’m delighted with this little chocolate maker and can’t wait to try some more bars.

This company has a subsidiary that makes bean-to-bar chocolate and has a very nice website. On our trip to the area, we bought some of their chocolates. They are actually not bean-to-bar and are very poor quality. The refinement is hardly 20micron as they claim and their milk chocolate (41%) is mainly cacao butter. They have nice family pictures shown visiting a cacao plantation but I think they just use cacao liquor from the commodity market rather than nibs as they claim. They give a bad name to artisan chocolate makers.
