My experience with Shefflets has been beyond disappointing. I honestly wouldn’t recommend them to anyone and I would strongly warn other potential tenants to read the following before renting through them.

From the point it was my misfortune to pick up the keys and enter the property there were problems. To read their check-in document, you would think that the entire apartment was sparkling new, without a speck of dust, with every single area and item listed as “Good condition and professionally cleaned”, quite literally without exception.

The truth was a heavily stained toilet, severely damaged and filthy dirty fridge, clumps of animal hair, left refuse, marks on the wall, stained furnishings and two broken windows that would not remain in the closed position. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

All of these points were reported to Shefflets using their own document, and although they received this at the beginning of the tenancy, no action was taken for any of the above, including the broken windows.

After 3 months, the windows were eventually repaired – during this period, they even asked me to get in touch with their repair company because they simply could not be bothered.

Then, after just 10 months, they attempted to raise the rent, claiming they were keeping in line with the market, even though there were other identical apartments in the same building, and in better condition, but with lower monthly rents (even before the rent rise).

At this point, I submitted my notice to leave, but Shefflets clearly saw this as an opportunity to recoup any potential lost income between me moving out and any unfortunate new tenant moving in. They therefore tried to charge for various spurious claims, even though the overall apartment was left in a far far better condition than it was when I moved in.

I have since sent a letter of complaint to Shefflets. Suffice to say they have not replied.

They’re very good during the sales process, but as soon as you move in then they act like a completely different company.

I would never ever consider renting a property through them again and I would caution anyone else from renting through Shefflets.

If you do rent with them, photograph absolutely everything when you move in – literally everything, as the photos they supply you at check-in will only make up approximately one third of the photos they then try to use against you when you move out, which can make it difficult to prove your point as the claim they're making against you will not have the same photographic evidence at check-in – which is clearly their aim.

we moved to shefflets from a different sheffield letting agent earlier this year and are absolutely happy with our decision. Shefflets have been patient and determined in sorting out the mess created by our previous agent and have managed to get a high quality tenant into our property despite unexpected hurdles. Shefflets will let you pay for the things that were already broken before you moved in, and they will ignore your requests to fix their broken items that were present when you moved in. Avoid this agency.

Worst letting agents in Sheffield. As many others have said, they use every trick in the book to scam money out of tenants at check out. Avoid at all costs if renting

I rented with Shefflets for 14 months and it was the worst experience I have ever had with a landlord or agent in 27 years of renting, and the only time any of my security deposit has ever been kept. They were super efficient about getting my money, but did little to address the long list of issues that I had at the property. I'd say my average wait was 6 weeks, and then things generally only got resolved (often unsatisfactorily) if I badgered them. Despite my leaving the flat practically spotless (e.g. I didn't clean around one or two pairs of sockets to their satisfaction), they deducted £110 for cleaning (the full price they'd quoted to clean the whole flat if I'd done nothing) and charged another £45 to change one of three lightbulbs in a kitchen light fitting. The main (attic) bedroom was unusable for the majority of the tenancy as it had no carpet or insulation - it was 6 degrees one morning, with the heating on. Multiple requests for reduced rent to compensate were denied, but they made sure to take an extra few pounds when I left. I wouldn't have minded so much if they had been half as efficient when I was a tenant. Truly dreadful!
