Appalling service and abusive owner

I strongly recommend potential customers think twice before using World Solar.
We had our solar system installed in 2022. Before purchasing, I clearly explained that our household has five fridges, multiple computers, and relatively high electricity usage. Their sales manager assured us that a 10kW battery and 5kW inverter would meet our needs. To be safe, I upgraded to a 15kW battery, 6kW inverter and two additional solar panels.
The first major problem became apparent during a power cut in 2023, when the battery backup did not work as promised. We also experienced a circuit breaker connected to the backup system repeatedly tripping and refusing to remain on. I reported this to World Solar and was told they would arrange an electrician, but nobody came. Follow-ups were met with excuses that electricians were fully booked.
The same issue happened again during a power cut in 2024. Once again, World Solar said they were trying to contact a contractor, but no electrician was sent.
In June 2026, the backup circuit tripped again, leaving part of our house without power. I contacted World Solar and was told by Doone Morrell that he would get back to me the following day. I heard nothing for two weeks and had to follow up myself.
Eventually, an electrician arrived without any notice. Even he appeared surprised that nobody had told us he was coming. He discovered that the fridges, Wi-Fi, and lights—which the original installers had claimed were connected to the battery backup—had not actually been connected. He spent more than two hours correcting the setup and completing a required software update.
Two days later, the circuit tripped again and would no longer stay on. I also noticed that a circuit breaker had been removed from the switchboard. Doone initially tried to help troubleshoot over the phone, but when the issue could not be resolved, I was told to contact the electrician myself or arrange another local electrician—even though World Solar had organised the previous visit and I did not initially have the electrician’s contact details.
Doone then suggested that I had requested too many appliances or power outlets to be connected to the backup system and may have overloaded it. This was not true. I had only asked for the fridges, Wi-Fi, and living-room lights that the original installer had already claimed were connected.
I later spoke directly with the electrician. He confirmed that the original installer had not connected the backup appliances correctly and that he had removed the missing breaker while changing the connections. He also confirmed that the backup system was drawing only around 5 amps during testing—well below its capacity—so overloading was highly unlikely. He believed the remaining issue was probably a faulty circuit breaker.
The most unacceptable part of this experience was my final phone conversation with Doone. After I criticised the lack of ownership, he became aggressive, called me a “d***head,” and threatened that if he lived nearby, he would come over and punch me in the face. I later called the World Solar office and was told that Doone is the owner.
After more than three years of unresolved problems, missed follow-ups, contradictory explanations, poor workmanship, and being threatened by the owner, I cannot recommend this company. Circuit problem remains, and I have now had to organise and pay for a local electrician to investigate a problem World Solar repeatedly failed to resolve.

Do not waste your time... WorldSolar NZ

Do not waste your time with this company. The customer service was extremely poor.

After waiting weeks for a phone consultation (they do not offer onsite consultations), I provided all the requested information, including all roof dimensions. I was told a quote would be provided by the end of the day.

After hearing nothing for three weeks, I followed up. A few days later I received a proposal that was not even close to what had been discussed. When I raised concerns that the proposal did not align with the consultation, I was told it was because I had not provided their requested information.

I replied that the information had been sent three weeks earlier to their administration team that asked for it. I then received a sarcastic response stating that my "hand-drawn" sketch could not be used for design software and that accurate roof plans were required, claiming this had been clearly explained before and during the consultation.

This was not the case, and if there was an issue with the information provided, it was never communicated to me.

More than a month later, all I have received is a generic proposal not fit for purpose and a response that attempts to shift the blame onto the customer.

Update: still waiting for Invercargill manager to respond to my request for formal complaint. Looks like the sales staff aren't the only ones providing poor customer service...
