I was allocated Ackroyd Legal via a broker to deal with the purchase of my first home. Qamar Shahrour was my appointed paralegal throughout the process. Her communication was excellent and she responded quickly to my enquiries. I'd like to personally thank her for how brilliantly she performed on completion day and getting me over the finish line. However, there are reasons why I can't give Ackroyd Legal a 5-star review.

On the day of exchanging contracts, I was sent information on how to transfer my 10% deposit and legal fees. When asking for support and clarification, I received no communication or help from the team considering the large amount of money being sent across. It was very stressful not knowing if the funds had arrived safely and I was annoyed that nobody from Ackroyd Legal confirmed that exchange had taken place. I did get an apology, but it was still unprofessional.

Ackroyd Legal state that they offer 20% discount on legal fee's to NHS workers. I was informed that I didn't qualify for this offer because I was referred via a broker. The terms and conditions on their website do not state this in the literature which is confusing and misleading.

What is concerning is the large number of negative reviews for Ackroyd Legal, particularly around poor communication and post-completion conveyancing. Reading these comments from other clients made me anxious throughout the process.

My advice would be to do plenty of research before deciding on a law firm to act on your behalf. Unfortunately, I feel it's pure luck of the draw on who you get allocated.

Home Legal Direct pointed me out to Ackroyd. They have charged me £190 to find me the conveyancer.
Ackroyd was instructed on the 27.11.2025 - equity transfer, re-mortgage, removing ex from the house ownership and the mortgage.
The whole process has finished just on the 25.02.2026.
From my part constant chasing on emails, phone, asking HLD to step up as they recommended them. Nothing really worked. I remember first conversations that completion will be before Xmas, then New Year and then carried on and on. I do understand that Xmas period is delayed things but, not to that extend... I don't see why it took so long. I wasn't required to submit anything extra documents or anything else.
Ahmed Thebo my case handler was just telling me what I wanted to hear every time I managed to speak to him (this wasn't always the case). Most of the time I felt like a pest calling 3 times a week When it was just about to complete - other part couldn't receive funds due to not having client account number. At that point mortgage was released already and I was stuck for 2 weeks with two mortgages and daily interest was ticking. I was, also 4 months out of fix term mortgage, so really wanted things done asap - but what you want and what you get is two different things. Once the other party found someone who could receive the funds for them we have completed however not everything was done on the same day. I found this case not having urgency at all. Also when I was answered on the phone not always this was pleasant experience - some members customer service skill lacked and this is just not when the stressed client needs.

Positive is that Ahmed not budged from releasing funds to 3rd party account, however shouldn't this be checked before mortgage was released?
Overall I had terrible experience and I can't imagine anyone who buys the house to go through it.

So 1 star is for overall short fall across very simple process.

Reading the previous reviews they were very mixed, but I can only speak from my own experience. My solicitor was Eralda, who I found really helpful and professional. I was selling my late brother’s flat, which was a leasehold property, and so she had to deal with me and the freeholder. As it was all done on line I did not find it easy, but Eralda always answered my emails within 10 minutes and was very helpful. My only criticism, (and nothing to do with Eralda was when the few times I tried to ring her it wasn’t a direct number, and it took ages to get through). All in all I was really pleased with the service.

Nicholas Martinez is very responsive to my case and I am happy to have him to handle two of my transactions. Definitely recommended!

I had sent 2 emails prior, to request my documents after completion with no response. On contacting the post completion Team -Mahrukh was very helpful by emailing me immediately and asking the exact document that I required. This was sent and I have received it .Thank for your Urgent approach.

Ope was my contact point with Ackroyd Legal in the sale of my father late property which was in probate. Ope was excellent . What she controlled was great. Communications and updates were often and would recommend her for any future conveyancing

As a Mortgage Broker I rarely provide feedback on the service received from Solicitors. However, the communications received and the speed of attending to tasks for my clients remortgage was superb. It is very unusual for "Free Legals" Solicitors to offer this level of service for a remortgage.

Ackroyd Legal are the best solicitors I have ever used, and I have used a few. Their teamwork is the gold standard, a One-For-All and All-For-One attitude ensure they are professional, reliable, helpful, highly security conscious, willing to help, ultra quick - without fault, and Uber inspiring!
I simply wish all conveyancing solicitors were Ackroyd Legal-but they are not, so use the best.

They were recommended to me but my experience has been very negative for 80% of the process.
Poor communication, lack of clarity, not replying for days, I had to chase constantly, very "yes or no" / not finding solutions, staying stuck on problems.
When I complained, I received a real mansplanation. I never felt heard. Will never use them again.

My case was handled by Fiona Condon. She had everything a buyer is looking for in a solicitor. Communicative, responsive, transparent and helpful. I'm extremely glad with her service. Will make sure to get back to her in any future purchases.

Do not go for these guys! Worst experience for buying my first house. I dealt with Ahmed Thebo, and he was very unhelpful throughout the whole process, very slow, rarely answered the phone, and never called when I asked.
I would like to add that he had miscalculated the amount to be sent to him and then held my first month's rent without me knowing (so I had to pay it to my housing people), over £8, which was his error!
So unhappy with the whole experience. Never again.
You get what you pay for - this is why they are on the lower end.

Everything that could go wrong,did go wrong.they don't answer the phone,they don't reply to your email,I had to pay stamp duty because they completed the form too late.i nearly lost the house because paperwork wasn't done in time

I used Ackroyd Legal for a flat purchase and without knowledge was outsourced to Spencer Lockwood. It was a truly terrible experience. It was very difficult to get in touch with the solicitor - often going a week without an email or call back. When communication occurred it was always very confusing. On reflection I wished I had used another provider - they made the whole experience of purchasing my first home extremely stressful. Even when I made a complaint it took months to resolve. Would not recommend.

A complete and utter terrible experience with this firm. Firstly unable to explain the simple process of buying and selling the house. Then being charged 4x the amount initially quoted for the service. Charged stamp duty and not told why when the property was under the parameters for stamp duty and directors guarantee to which I was charged for even tho I didn’t send over any relevant documents that were needed so this was just a money grabbing opportunity as completion was due within the next day so I felt I had no choice to get completed on the time schedule. They left it till the last couple of days to complete within the time period so it was all a rush and I was charged a lot more with no time to explore why or question it without risking missing completion. Terrible experience and will never use or recommend this company to anyone.

the communication is useless there is always excuses always blame on someone else no one to speak to or put on hold and then after 35 mins line goes dead etc etc it has taken/still taking nearly 8 months to do a house purchase for cash Management not returning calls etc etc IT HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE
