Frustrating and Impersonal Hiring Process with AI

My experience with Andela's hiring process was disappointing, particularly when it came to their use of AI. Initially, I was excited to apply, but the process quickly became frustrating. The AI-driven assessments and screenings felt impersonal and often disconnected from the role I was applying for. Instead of focusing on my specific skills and experience, the AI seemed to rely heavily on generic algorithms that overlooked my unique qualifications.

One major issue was the automated nature of the interviews. The AI-driven chatbots and assessment tools lacked the nuance that a human recruiter could have provided. It felt more like the system was checking boxes rather than evaluating me as a candidate. This led to a lack of clarity in feedback and no sense of personal engagement, which made the entire experience feel robotic and detached.

To make matters worse, there was little to no follow-up or human interaction. After the AI screening, I was left in limbo for weeks with no update or feedback on my application. The lack of transparency and communication was frustrating, especially for someone trying to navigate through a process that felt entirely driven by automation rather than human insight.

Overall, Andela's reliance on AI for their hiring process needs serious improvement. It lacks the personal touch and attention to detail that should be fundamental in assessing candidates. I wouldn’t recommend this approach to anyone looking for a more human-centered experience in their job search.

No response after 3+ months

Andela sold my personal data, so I contacted them, as per their privacy policy. Zero response after 3 months, even when cc'ing their listed support and GDPR points of contact.

I see only 3 explanations*, none of which would make me consider doing business with them:
1. They did see it and willfully ignored it (which is illegal and says lots about how things could go should your interests not be aligned with theirs)
2. They missed it 3 times / on multiple points of contact, or it's in a backlog that's bigger than 4 months.
3. They didn't even see it on 3 different, official points of contact.

Simply put, I wouldn't trust they'd address any issues in a timely and reliable manner.

* If you're generous, you can imagine a 4th: the 3 emails never arrived. But I didn't get any delivery failure notification and I'm using gmail, which one can reasonably expect to work / not bounce when contacting a company.

Andela is people first in everything they do. I am very impressed with how they approached helping us find people, sourcing people to interview and supporting their folks after onboarding.

One of my biggest concern was timezone and hours overlap. As the collaboration progressed, it was hardly noticeable. Andela resources were very diligent about timezone and made adjustment accordingly

The Andela staff was quick to meet with me as a new team manager to introduce themselves and discuss their roles and responsibilities. We had a quick follow up meeting and regularly scheduled meetings to discuss team members, work efforts, etc. I appreciate the thorough communication.

Not really worth it

The engineer they landed us is just OK and there have been constant problems with them invoicing us the wrong amounts (some months too much, some months too little).

It seems the quality has really fallen…

It seems the quality has really fallen off in the past few years. Ever since they moved to the hiring contractors model as opposed to their training program with folks hired as employees, I've noticed a substantial decrease in the quality of developers. Out of the 5 positions we filled by Andela, we had to replace 3 of them and even the replacements weren't great and had to be replaced again. In addition, in the short 2 years we've been with them, we've had 5 different account reps.

Strong Resources

We started with Andela in a "staff aug" capacity as a pilot to evaluate the strength of folks they could bring to the table. Our experience to date has been that they bring great talent to our team needs, quickly absorbed what we are generally looking for in terms of technical and "soft" skills and reliably ablt to fill our needs.
