Brilliant and professional service
We have worked with Claire when she was at a previous firm and had a good experience with purchasing our first home. Working with her again and other brilliant colleagues at Hewitson and Harker (Tasnia and Isabelle particularly) has made a very stressful moving experience more manageable. We felt that Claire and the team were genuinely working to safeguard us, additionally when there were delays elsewhere in the chain, she and the team got ahead where they could in other aspects of the work to keep us as close to our timeline as we could. When there were delays in exchanging contracts from other areas of the chain, the team held on until the last possible minute each day to see if we could exchange.

My property purchase took nearly 7…
My property purchase took nearly 7 months to complete despite being a relatively simple transaction (chain-free, share of freehold). My first conveyancer was reassigned somewhere else after a few months and it appeared that virtually nothing had happened in that time. Roberta, my second conveyancer was much more responsive and helpful, but I ulitmately had to call to chase at least once if not twice a week for much of the seven months of the process (which I had initially been advised would take 8-12 weeks) because she evidently had an exteremly high caseload. I had to get a mortgage offer extension and several of the searches that had been completed at the start of the process had expired by the time I was ready to complete so were useless and meant I had to pay for an indemnity policy through no fault of my own. In addition, I was suddenly asked to provide an excessive amount of anti-fraud evidence right at the end of process when I had repeatedly asked months previously if there was anything else I could do whilst we waited for other things to progress, causing massive amounts of unnecessary stress. Ultimately, we completed just days before the extension deadline and I was genuinely unsure if it would go through at all up to that point. Whilst I appreciate that some fees were waived as a gesture of goodwill, I would advise anyone looking to work with Hewitson and Harker that they are clearly either understaffed or taking on too many cases, so be prepared to chase constantly if you want things to complete in a timely manner.

We are sorry to hear that you found the length of the transaction frustrating, particularly given the timescale you had initially hoped for. While we appreciate that seven months is a significant period of time, unfortunately there were elements of the transaction outside of our control, including delays in receiving the information and responses required from the other side’s solicitors before the matter could progress.
We do appreciate your kind comments regarding Roberta and are pleased that you found her responsive and helpful after she took over conduct of your matter. We also acknowledge your comments regarding communication and the timing of the additional information requested towards the end of the transaction. We understand that, particularly with a mortgage offer deadline approaching, this will have added to what was already a stressful process.
We would, however, like to reassure you that the firm is appropriately staffed and that we actively monitor caseloads across our conveyancing teams. Unfortunately, even transactions which appear relatively straightforward at the outset can encounter delays or additional requirements as they progress, particularly where we are reliant upon third parties.
We were pleased that the transaction ultimately completed and that we were able to waive certain fees as a gesture of goodwill. We do take feedback such as this seriously and will use your comments when reviewing our processes and client communication going forward.
