Do not listen, do not get back to you in time, do not follow requests that are appropriate and contradict themselves.

I engaged HK Law to prepare wills and lasting powers of attorney for both my wife and me. After an initial meeting at their Southbourne office, we were assured the process would take no more than two to three weeks.

Two months passed, and the only communication I received was a generic letter advising me of their eye-watering hourly rate increases. I emailed to request an update — no response. A week later, I followed up again, this time copying in their general 'info' mailbox. Only then did I receive an apology, and the draft wills were sent out the same day.

Upon opening my will, I was greeted by a glaring typographical error: it referred to “my husband [my name]” instead of “my wife [her name]” — a basic and embarrassing mistake. It was evident the documents had been hastily copied and pasted without proper proofreading. Given their fees, this is unacceptable.

I learned that the solicitor handling our case had left the firm. It appears there was no handover or case continuity in place — a basic procedural failure that should not occur in any professional practice.

I’ve had previous dealings with Humphries Kirk and HK Law — not all satisfactory, and I know I'm not alone. A friend’s horror story about HK Law's mishandling of a probate case springs to mind.

Thankfully, my wife and I are still alive, so we avoided the prospect of dying intestate. Personally, I would avoid this firm.

EDIT. I was informed that a member of staff had left, which had contributed to the issues. However, once HKlaw were made aware of the situation, they responded promptly, issued a full apology, and resolved the matter to my satisfaction.

The legal representative we dealt with was polite, and helpful. We received very clear advice and always very promptly. We have not always experienced this with other firms.
