Hilarious post from the CCO
After seeing a humorous post from Saxo’s CCO on LinkedIn about FX fees, I couldn’t resist writing a review in response.
Saxo is absolutely right to highlight the impact FX fees have on investing—ironically, that’s one of the main reasons I left them as my investment platform for my Stocks and Shares ISA. With other platforms offering commission-free trading, fractional shares, and FX fees that are 50% lower than Saxo’s, the decision was obvious. Add in the high commission fees and the steep minimum balance required to earn interest on uninvested cash, switching brokers was a no-brainer.
Not only has this move saved me a fortune in fees, but I also now have access to far better tools for managing my portfolio—at a lower cost—something Saxo simply failed to provide.

Thanks for your colourful review! We love a good debate about FX fees, and we’re proud to say our FX conversion fee of 0.25% is among the most competitive out there. While some platforms might offer lower rates, these are quite rare, and we pride ourselves on maintaining competitive spreads, especially when compared to non-zero commission brokers.
Remember, never mistake price for value. Zero-commission brokers might sound tempting, but the mechanisms behind those offers don't always guarantee the “best execution” prices. We focus on providing both value and quality service to our clients.
We’re aware that fractional shares are a hot topic, and we're always evaluating our offerings to meet our clients' needs. As for interest on uninvested cash, we're reviewing our thresholds to provide more flexibility.
Just a heads-up: we updated our fee structure in January 2024, with new minimums starting from $1 for the US stocks, £3 for the UK stocks, a 0.25% FX conversion fee, and a 0.12% custody fee per annum. We strive to offer a balance of competitive pricing and value, ensuring that our clients receive the best execution possible. Excitingly, our ISA offering will become a flexible ISA offering at the start of the new tax year in 2025, providing even more options for our clients.

The personal touch. It can be complicated setting up accounts for trading. Sometimes, for obvious reasons. Whenever i needed assistance both setting up and, as it happens closing my account too. They were most helpful. with the improved trading costs, when I'm trading again i will definitely be back.

Zero is too much for Saxo! A fraudish experience?
February 2024 I was asked to update the account information for my SaxoTraderGo account. Apart from the usual statements from me about the account, Saxo demanded copies of documents that would have revealed details about my busnis arrangements with other banks, so I decided bravely to end my Saxo engagement. That became a nightmare of nearly impossible communication between me, my basis bank and Saxo Bank with strange things happening to my account. For instance one of my assets suddenly appeared to have a 'corporate action' activated which prevented its transfer to my basis bank. I had not accepted this offer to buy the asset. Who had? In the end Saxo carried through the sale without my acceptance ignoring that my basis bank several times had tried to arrange a transfer of this asset.
I can only warn against this creepy bank. It has been impossible for me as well as my primary bank to get into a meaningful dialogue with them about this problem.
Saxo's response below is not to the point. I already have an amount of exactly the same asset in my primary bank where they have NOT been exposed to any corporate actions. That raises the question: what is really going on in Saxo Bank?

I would like to clarify that Saxo Bank is not responsible for corporate actions related to your assets. These actions are announced and determined by the instrument providers, and Saxo Bank does not have any involvement in these decisions. It is common for investors to be temporarily restricted from selling their instruments during specific periods when corporate actions, such as dividend payouts or purchase options, are in effect. These actions may require investors to hold the instrument to be eligible for certain rights. Some corporate actions are mandatory and processed automatically by the provider, while others allow you to choose the outcome.
As a licensed bank in the EU, we are committed to complying with strict regulations, which require us to maintain updated client information. We understand that this process should not be burdensome for our clients. If our requirements are not met, we may initially restrict your account, and eventually, terminate it, as regulations prohibit us from keeping non-compliant accounts open. Clients are notified by mail prior to termination, informing them that if compliance is not met or positions are not moved before the deadline, Saxo reserves the right to liquidate positions and transfer the remaining balance to an external bank account in preparation for account closure. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by miscommunication between us and your external bank.

Firstly, before opening my brokerage account I managed to get in contact with SAXO about whether they offered short selling on a specific stock. They said yes, I then went through their arduous process of opening an account. Once opened and funds were in my account, which took well over a month.
The instrument I inquired about was in fact NOT available to short. An enormous time waste, so much so I missed the opportunity to short said stock.
I gave SAXO the benefit of the doubt. Now that I have different trades on I've now have to PAY for basic market data. Your account prices will be delayed 15 minuets from the real time market. Meaning you're left guessing what your positions are actually worth unless you pay a monthly subscription
SAXO very much hides this from you until they have your funds on their books.
It's a shame as I wanted to give these guys a chance.
They also purposely make the withdrawal process for funds drawn out and needlessly convoluted compared to other big brokers Like Interactive Brokers or E Toro.

Our representatives aim to provide accurate information, but it’s clear we should have asked more detailed questions about the instrument in question. On the topic of market data, we’re transparent about the 15-minute delay in pricing. This information is displayed on the platform, including when prices were last updated, and it's noted in the product overview. Offering live market data requires agreements with exchanges, and the associated costs are passed on to clients through subscription fees. While we can’t comment on how other providers source and structure their pricing, these fees are necessary for us to provide licensed and accurate data directly from the markets.
As for the withdrawal process, we strive to make funding and withdrawals as straightforward as possible. However, transfers back to brokers do involve added complexities, including regulatory requirements, which can take additional time compared to direct bank withdrawals. We continually review our processes to ensure they are efficient while meeting all necessary standards.

Impossible to withdraw money
I have tried to withdraw multiple times to two different banks and they keep saying the other banks are rejecting it. The other banks claim they never received any transaction request and requested proof of payment request from Saxo. Saxo could not provide this. I ask live support and they say “please wait while I check this for you” and then the chat closes due to inactivity. This has happened to me multiple times. Do not use Saxo bank its a black hole and you can’t receive your money. I have $250 000 stuck here forever I guess. I hope this review stops others making the same error as I did from trusting Saxo bank.
Edit: they have responded to my trust pilot review but they have still not sent my money. They keep saying the bank is rejecting the payments but I know this is false because I have tried two different banks and they have both confirmed they have received nothing from Saxo. The issue remains unsolved and there is no suggestions from Saxo on how to withdraw the money. The time for withdrawal so far to two different banks has been one month. I will keep updating this review if they ever get back to me with a solution but at this stage I am not expecting anything, I have been communicating with support for over a month now and they can’t seem to work out how withdrawals work.
Edit 19/12/2024: I have updated this review to a 3 star because I managed to get money out of my account from an asset transfer which was quick and smooth. It is not a scam site but you have to get your money out by asset transfers to a site that will allow withdrawals. If it wasn't for this fact, I would rate it 4 or 5 stars.

We hope this resolves the confusion when Saxo payments team have advised you that the funds were rejected by corresponding bank due to invalid beneficiary bank account.

Regarding real-time prices, platforms like Google Finance and Yahoo Finance provide general data, but the prices may not always match trading prices due to licensing differences.
At Saxo, we source accurate, real-time prices directly from exchanges, which often require fees.
Having said that we do offer a refund scheme: market data fees are refunded per exchange if you make at least four trades on stocks, ETFs, or CFDs on that exchange within a calendar month.
