I am on my last but one day of an 11 day tour round Turkey. This will be followed by a 7 day cruise from Istanbul to Rome on the Queen Victoria.
Good things: booking process was easy, thorough and staff were very helpful. All the information I received was timely and very thorough
Arrival at Istanbul and transport to hotel was very smooth
Our guide, Emrah, was excellent throughout and his expertise really made the trip -he was very knowledgeable, approachable, very well organised and likeable. The driver was also excellent. In fact, all the staff involved were great.
The itinerary was full on - lots of travel round a large part of internal Turkey - but I knew that before I went The activities and experiences were all very good indeed, extremely interesting, well organised and ran to time. I learnt a lot! Comfortable bus too.
The hotels used were generally very good, especially the ones in Istanbul, Ankara and Kusadasi. A couple of the others ( Konya for example) were less good, breakfast was like eating in a pretty poor refectory. Some of the dinners and lunches included in the programme were very good but again one or two were not very good quality - the restaurants seemed set up to just serve coach trip tourists and I felt I was on a conveyer belt. All very formulaic and not in any way a chance to experience good local Turkish cuisine. Apart from the Marriott in Ankara I'd say the hotels were really 4 star, or even 3 star - certainly not the UK equivalent of 4 and 5 star as advertised.
Less good things: the awful Turkish evening in Cappadocia. 2800 TL for drinks and snacks ( very limited and poor quality) and local folk dancing. Initially the dancing was OK, then a belly dancer came on and after a couple of dances lured male members of the audience up and it all became very naff. Felt completely inauthentic and very poor value for money.
The side trips to carpet, jewellery, wine, ceramic and leather outlets. Why are these necessary? Generally they were uncomfortable, high pressure sales events. No idea how genuine the products and prices were but I found the whole experience off-putting. I think the time would have been better spent on the sightseeing activities. I'd be interested to know who gets a cut from the sales made at these places!
As a solo traveller, one of my long running issues is with the single person supplement - something like 75% - and I have no idea how this can possibly be justified. Come on, Imagine Cruising, break out of the mould and introduce fairer prices for the singletons!
I know I've listed a few things that I didn't like but they did not spoil my overall enjoyment of a very good tour which gave me the chance to do something I've always wanted to do which was to visit historical Turkey. The group I traveled with were great and I've had a lovely holiday experience so far. I would certainly not hesitate to recommend Imagine Cruising and although this was the first time I've travelled with them, I will certainly use them again. And many of the people on the tour had used them several times which is a testament to the quality of what they offer.
