JD Gyms - Thornton Cleveleys Reviews 

Having been to smaller gyms, it’s feels very busy and cramped for space around the many machines but it’s just a matter of finding the best time to go and work around busy periods. Much better selection of machines and equipment however than most gyms.

Absolutely ridiculous that the air con doesn’t work in the gym in this heat. Heard this has been an ongoing issue since it opened in 2019. The answer is a few fans dotted around blowing warm air about. An absolute joke when people are paying money for a service

Highly recommend Joes Saturday morning HIIT class. Joe is SO full of energy and enthusiasm! Great class and a lot of fun 😁

Equipment in the gym is old compared to other jd gyms locations, rusty attachments, stiff moving machines

The gym floor is always to hot
Not enough variety and quantity of gym equipment
Opening hours are too short at the weekend

Great gym, fantastic equipment only downside is closing times on weekends. I can appreciate Sunday being different hours just like most places but wish Saturday had the 10pm close

Fantastic. Definitely worth signing up! Only thing I’d suggest as an improvement would be a bigger sauna and more cold showers.

Great gym easy to use treadmills lots of benches + equipment would be in the world class category with Myzone screens with gym leaderboard monthly challenges etc or even just the Myzone tablets on screen of whoever has them on in gym 💪🏻👍🏻🤜🏻❤️

In January 2025 I decided to change gyms. I am a senior citizen (74yrs) keep fit enthusiast and my grandson recommended JD Gyms (Thornton Cleveleys). I have been training and attending gyms since I was a young man so I have seen their development and increase in popularity over the years. The equipment at JD is top notch no doubt about it and there is plenty of it. I attended at various times and never found it too busy and was always able to use the equipment I wanted. The cleanliness of the main gym area was pretty good considering the number of users. Occasionally a piece of kit was out of service but there are always others you can use.
Most of the staff are friendly and polite but dont engage you in conversation to enquire if you are enjoying your experience. Having said that if I asked I always got the information I wanted.
So all of the above points are ok now to the rest, the changing rooms. I am referring specifically to the male changing rooms which include the toilets, showers and sauna. The area in which you get changed is filled with benches and lockers and at busy times is chaotic. The room is simply not big enough, its not helped by the fact many people dont use the lockers they just leave their bags on the benches. I would rate the cleanliness of the changing rooms as unpleasant. This is in my opinion down to the size which simply cannot accomodate the number of gym users at busy times. I think its a one person full time job to keep it clean. A member of the gym staff in the changing room would also improve the overall experience as I have regularly seen people using phones to video and photograph whilst they pose in the mirror. I found this very intrusive and totally inappropriate in such an area. I raised the subject with a member of staff who told me to speak to the people who were doing it and ask them to stop. There was no offer of the staff doing anything. A couple of visits later when I asked two youths to stop filming it became controntational. This was the final straw I spoke to two male members of staff. As I explained my complaint one of the staff started smiling which made matters worse, the other told me using a phone as a camera was permitted in the changing rooms but not in the gym area. I told him this was totally unacceptable and I found it hard to believe it was true.
If I have got to my age and I am forced to endure this sort of behaviour and lack of respect I no longer wish to be a member of JD Gyms.

its a good gym but can be busy at times so it's hard to get on some machines and equitment.

Really like this gym, a good selection of of machines and I like the vibe with the music and it being based next to the sea. The staff are also really friendly, the changing rooms are clean and big. There are a couple of machines (pec dec and hip thrust) are never free so would be nice to have a couple of them because I haven't managed to get on either for my last few sessions now. It would also be valuable to me and other members to have way more antibac wipes / sprays around the gym because the equipment is not cleaned in between people are the wipes aren't accessible. Otherwise, I like this gym. I imagine it would be far too busy for me after work hours but because I go in the day time it isn't too bad

Friendly and helpful staff, great abundance of equipment topped off with a good sauna, loving using the facilities.

Great gym, lots of good equipment, clean and spacious. Lewis the assistant general manager is great - super helpful and friendly. He always makes sure things get reported and fixed when broken and has a wealth of knowledge on health and fitness if you need advice. Lucy the pulse Pilates instructor is also absolutely fabulous, love her energy and classes! Also love that there are separate male/female saunas.

Being 70 yes old,I was pleased to see agood mix of ages .Made me feel confident and I enjoyed the experience. I will definitely become permanent member.

I last reviewed JD Gyms Thornton-Cleveleys in December 2023 when I was just 3 months into gym life. This was the very first gym I had walked into when I joined in September 2023 at the age of 55. I had never been into fitness, gyms, or a healthy lifestyle previously.

I have been to several JD Gyms since (including Derby, Rugby, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Blackpool and Preston) and Thornton-Cleveleys is by far my favourite. I love the atmosphere. Everything in one big space. No need to constantly go up and down stairs (unless you specifically want the studio).

The staff are super helpful and friendly. Caz looks after a great team of people (including Lewis (#1), Ella, Andy, Tony, Oscar, Justine and Lewis (#2)) and the PTs (Stacey, Carol, Mikey and Pres) always seem busy with clients as well as taking time to say hi and be friendly. It has to be said that Caz is a good manager and is night and day compared to the previous manager (Gaz) who did seem to be a source of disgruntlement when listening to conversations in the sauna. I don't hear anything negative these days.

My personal experience is now guided by Carol West, my personal trainer/coach. Having started out training with the brilliant Matty Schmid (he can be credited with helping me fall in love with gym life. He took a very nervous gym virgin and built my confidence and self-belief) in September 2023 and continuing with him as he progressed to duty manager at Preston and now assistant general manager at Blackpool, my journey is now with Carol. Starting training with Carol in July 2025 took things to another level. She programmes my solo training days alongside the in-person PT days and nutrition. Always smiling, making training challenging but fun. Checking-in on progress and ensuring things are kept on-track to help me achieve the big goals that I have set for myself. For anyone wondering if it is worth having a personal trainer... if you are new to the gym or if you have specific goals then it will certainly help you achieve them... and Carol West Coaching is certainly one of the best!

The gym itself is kitted out with a great range of equipment. Everything is kept clean, locker rooms are well maintained and the sauna is a good size. We could do with the coffee machine being replaced in the cafe area as this broke a year or so ago and has now been completely removed. There is no sign of it being replaced meaning the cafe area is just a seating area. I bring my own coffee in, setup my laptop and get a couple of hours work done before training most days.

Would I recommend JD Gyms Thornton-Cleveleys? If you've read the above then 1) Well done and 2) Of course I would! The JD Gyms membership is really good value regardless of which branch you go to, but Thornton-Cleveleys was my first ever gym and will always hold a special place in my fitness journey.

JD Cleveleys is a great gym, plenty of equipment for both weight training and cardio, the staff are friendly also which is a bonus

Very reasonable monthly cost as well so no complaints there.
