Staff welcoming and polite, food is fresh and tasty
As we passed through Hull, only yesterday, we decided to have a lunch there. My daughter used Google and found a pub that we left quicker than we went in. The menu was very limited and there were no vegetarian or vegan options. So, I decided it's my turn to find a pub. A quick entry into the Yahoo search engine of, "Pub+Sunday Roast+Hull" brought the local Hull Daily Mail to the top where the newspaper has an article that declares the 10 best pubs in Hull. The Red Sails was the 3rd pub down so we went there as it was on the way towards the Humber Bridge. My daughter phoned ahead and let them know we were on the way.
When we arrived we were greeted and immediately noticed that they had put two tables together with five chairs, for our group. I have read some of the other Trust pilot reviews regarding Marston's pubs and can clearly see that those with negative reviews have a vendetta. One gives a 1* review because he had to sit outside with his dog, which is actually written in Law. No dogs are allowed inside establishments that prepare and / or provide food. The only exception is for those with guide dogs and that includes pups being trained. Another 1* review claims the kitchens are filthy and all the food is microwaved but also mentions his daughter was fired from her job in that pub. Another reviewer got possed off because he had to order the food at the bar? Seriously! How can somebody get a grudge because he had to order food at the bar, has that guy never been to a pub before or has nobody told him that all the Covid restrictions were lifted... two Prime Ministers ago?
After reading other reviews I can agree with those that have left positive reviews as we only had a good experience. One of us had a steak and it came as ordered... rare. One had a curry dish, two of us had the Sunday (carvery) Roast and one had a vegan meal. The service was good, staff regularly checked that we are happy, the carvery chef was polite.. in fact all the staff were polite. The only negative point was that the Yorkshire puddings were a little on the tough side but not so much as deserving a complaint as they truly are produced on site. We did like the Yorkshire Puddings and they were quite large.
The sauces that were available were all that were needed, from mint sauce through to apple sauce for the gammon, cranberry sauce for the turkey and horseradish for the beef. Apart from the Yorkies everything else was fresh and piping hot.
I had a nice cool Marston's ale to wash my food down with and it was quite refreshing and palatable for a beer that I hadn't had before. Even before purchasing I asked for a sample and the barmaid politely obliged so after having a taste and finding it to my liking that is what I drank during our visit.
The pub was clean and tidy... with no dog hairs floating around to get into our food (for the reviewer that thinks dogs should be allowed where people eat), the staff were welcoming, polite and friendly, the food was piping hot and fesh (hadn't been nuked in a microwave as the father of an ex-employye claims) so I can recommend the Red Sails especially given that the prices for the Sunday Roast (carvery) are good.

Fab, fresh food and a friendly welcome.
The Houghton Arms pub at Withnell near Chorley, Lancashire is a fabulous place for a drink or a meal. The staff are welcoming, attentive and so friendly (we were served by Andrea and Ashley tonight), that you are made to feel at home. Such a refreshing change these days. Tonight, we enjoyed a meal and drink and I have to say that the food is top notch. Infact, it's our number one place to eat out at. We highly recommend that you visit.
The Houghton arms has a lovely staff…
The Houghton arms has a lovely staff team who made us feel really welcome. The signature burger was juicy and the addition of camambert elevated it way past a traditional cheeseburger. I had mentioned it was my birthday and the lovely ladies Andrea and Ashley who served us brought me some ice cream and sang happy birthday. Lovely sentiment that has gained my regular custom . Get down and try it out.
Nice friendly atmosphere nice family pub.
Nothing was too much trouble for Shannon the young lady who was heavily pregnant. The food and service was great thanks again.
As stated before a Complaint was sent…
As stated before a Complaint was sent to them for Spoiling a Meal Get together at the New Inn, they offered to give Vouchers which as of today Never Arrived despite them saying on Wednesday last I would get them in 24 hours, like the food NOT true to Their Word.
I booked a table at the Spread Eagle…
I booked a table at the Spread Eagle Gailey after speaking to someone on the phone through their website
They confirmed it was ok for dogs
However on arrival and greeted by Adam the manager who arrogantly told us dogs were not allowed inside and that we didn’t speak to anyone there it must have been headquarters he told us quite rudely we could only eat in the gazebo area no explanation of where it was etc
So looking for the gazebo we found a large children’s play area with three to four small huts
Asked an employer if he had a cloth to wipe down table or benches he just grunted ask at restaurant
So all in all chef at the carvery was very polite and the bar girls as for the rest I would not advise anyone to eat here
Merrie Gardens Sandown
Merrie Gardens Sandown. 27th went, no food without booking. Fair enough so booked for tonight, 7.30. Still sign saying bookings only. Even so a couple in front of us had no booking but were accepted. A sign notified us that the wait for food would be 45minutes.We were handed well worn menus and told to order at the bar, we did. One hour and 15 minutes later food arrived. 'Anything else?', shrugged the waitress. Yes please. Cutlery would be useful, and salt and sauce. The cutlery was thrown down, as were sachets of salt. I then attempted to cut a sausage. Difficult. It was solid and charred. I did try and eat it, dry, hard and not fit for human consumption. This evening we were not the only customers dissatisfied with our meal. Ruined our evening and ensured that we will never go to Marstons again.

This pub with current tenants is going from strength to strength, the drinks are always in tip top condition and entertainment on most weekends. Darts night on Mondays red tooth poker every Tues and open mike night 1st wed of month, the beer garden with its spectacular views over open countryside as to be seen, it is also very dog friendly with a selection of treats available for your canine friends.
Mediocre carvery
The Fly Line. Garforth
Had the carvery which we had had several times before. Today was not a good day. Yorkshire pudding & stuffing like leather. The roast potatoes over cooked so edges were almost black. We paid extra for pigs in blankets but they were still being cooked. Brought to our table in a few minutes & anaemic they needed at least another 10 mins in the oven!!! The gravy was very thin you could see through it & was not hot enough spoiled our dinner. More attention to detail needed & not sure we will have this again. It’s a shame my beef was lovely. Disappointing.

A Long Wait for a Mediocre Christmas Meal
The Christmas meal at the Puredrop left a lot to be desired; with a long wait for both the starter and the main meal; which when it arrived, was overcooked and tasteless. Not ideal for £50 a head.
Update: Following this review, I was contacted by Marstons and have been sent vouchers to make up for our experience on Christmas Day, and for that I’m very grateful.
great night at the Ffynnon Wen
This is the third time we have had a meal at the Ffynnon Wen in cardiff, over the last 9 months, and every time is the same good food and extremely attentive waiting staff.
Even the managers come and chat to make sure the evening is a success.
The Christmas Pie is the worst pie I…
The Christmas Pie is the worst pie I have ever eaten. It was small, and contained 5 pieces of "chicken", each piece was smaller then 1*1*0.5 cm. The rest of pie contained two equally small pieces of carrot, and a thick brown sauce.
Giving Feedback to their website received a non commital response.
Pie Terrible, Customer Complaint procedure Terrible.
