As a nanny I am so grateful that my employers use NannyPaye. I had an underpayment from HMRC from a previous job and NannyPaye have explained it all to me and explained the calculation on it (even though my previous employer was not with NannyPaye, but another big nanny payroll company). Then just to complicate things further I have now got a split tax code between my two current employers which NannyPaye emailed me exactly what to say to HMRC and the phone number to call. They could not have been more helpful and I am grateful for the extra attention that you have given me over the last month whilst we got this setup. Thank you.

Incredibly disappointed with the service received from NannyPaye. They have completely messed up the tax arrangements with our nanny, but worse is that they have been totally unhelpful in trying to sort everything out. NannyPaye are fine when just acting as a postbox / messenger, but anything more complicated then they are completely inept.

Update in light of NannyPaye’s response.

We had been sole employers of our nanny and, therefore, had been receiving the full benefit of her tax free allowance. She started working for a second family earlier this year, following which we received an email from NannyPaye advising us that our nanny’s tax code has been changed and that, as a result, our payments to HMRC were likely to increase. We assumed that we would now be receiving 50% of the tax free allowance and so fully accepted that our tax payments would go up sa bit. However, we had no idea that we were actually now receiving none of the tax free allowance at all. This is not fair and not what was intended by the parties involved.

Our nanny is now on the correct tax code (as a result of our nanny calling HMRC several times herself). However, NannyPaye have been incredibly unhelpful and very defensive, implying that we should be able to decipher tax codes ourselves and saying that all the bills etc. they have issued have been correct. They may be correct in terms of keeping HMRC happy, but they are not correct in terms of the parties’ intentions. The second family purposefully used NannyPaye in order to avoid issues like this, but it has not made any difference.

We feel NannyPaye should have fully explained that we were losing 100% of the tax free allowance. Had they done so, we could have sorted tax codes with HMRC much earlier and avoided all the subsequent issues. As it is, it is basically impossible to solve the problem retrospectively and we are out of pocket by about £600.

We sent an email to Graham Newton on 15 August detailing our grievances but, disappointedly, have received no response from him.

We pay NannyPaye in order help make employing a nanny simple, but we do not feel we have received value for money. Indeed, we believe they have acted negligently and this has resulted in us losing a considerable amount of money.

Further update:

This is the first time we have been told that we will be able to get a refund. The message we had previously received (from both NannyPaye and HMRC) is that we were unlikely to receive a refund because HMRC overall received the correct amount of tax, it is just that the majority of that was paid by us rather than been fairly split between us and our Nanny’s other employees. Perhaps NannyPaye would like to communicate with us directly (and in response to my hitherto ignored emails) rather than using this public forum.
