- Why do I have a workplace pension?
- The government’s auto enrolment laws mean all employers must put eligible employees into a workplace pension and contribute to their pension savings. NOW: Pensions provides workplace pensions for millions of members on behalf of tens of thousands of employers.
- Can I stop paying into my pension?
- Yes, you can stop paying in at any time. After being auto enrolled for one month, the pension savings you’ve saved will be invested until you retire or transfer to another pension provider. You’ll be able to see your account at nowgateway.com. If you stop paying into your pension, you’ll miss out on your employer’s contributions – at least 3% of your earnings; tax relief; and building up pension savings. Please note charges will still apply.
- Can I opt out?
- You can opt out within a month of being auto enrolled and get back any money you’ve paid in. If you opt out after a month, your pension savings will be invested until you retire or transfer to another pension provider.
- Can I have my money now?
- Pension laws mean if you don’t opt out within one month of being auto enrolled, your pension savings will be invested until you retire or transfer your savings to another pension provider. You can start to take your pension savings any time after you reach age 55.
- Why can’t I cash in my pension savings?
- After you’re auto enrolled in a workplace pension, pension laws give you one month to opt out. After a month, your pension savings will be invested until you retire or transfer your savings to another provider.
- How long does it take to transfer out?
- Once we’ve received everything we need to carry out your transfer request, payment can take up to 25 working days.
- How do I check the progress of my request?
- If you’ve made a request and want to check how it’s going, email trustpilot@nowpensions.com or give us a call on 0330 100 3334 and we’ll be able to update you.

Extremely poor service DO NOT TRUST THEM
Extremely poor service: 12 weeks and still waiting
I have been trying to transfer my pension away from NOW: Pensions for 12 weeks, and the level of service I have received has been absolutely unacceptable.
When I initiated the transfer, NOW: Pensions apparently did not even know I had two pension accounts with them. Since then, I have been repeatedly let down by a lack of organisation, communication and basic customer service.
On two separate occasions, four weeks apart, I was explicitly reassured that my accounts would be combined and the transfer completed by the end of that week. On both occasions, this did not happen. These were clear assurances given to me by their own staff, yet neither deadline was met.
A pension transfer should not take three months of chasing, repeated broken promises and unnecessary stress. Customers should be able to trust that their pension provider can manage their accounts properly and provide accurate information about the progress of a transfer. My experience has demonstrated the opposite.
It is particularly frustrating that this issue has been dragged out for so long despite repeated assurances that it would be resolved. If NOW: Pensions cannot meet a deadline, the least they can do is communicate honestly rather than repeatedly promise that everything will be completed by the end of the week.
I would strongly advise anyone considering NOW: Pensions to think carefully about the level of service they may receive. Based on my experience, I would not recommend them. A pension provider should inspire confidence and trust, not leave customers chasing for months while being given assurances that repeatedly amount to nothing.

The process is far to slow
The process is far to slow. If a client requests the money from the pot at a certain age in a cash lump sum, this should be automatically done. Instead the client has to do a step by step process that takes up to 10 days per stage. When the client does complete the stages it takes a further 3/4 days to receive the money. This should be paid by a bacs payment immediately.

Thanks so much for letting us know about your experience.
Firstly, I really do understand that you wish for the money to be paid as soon as possible and that's our aim too! That being said, given how important the pension is for our member's retirement income we have to ensure we do appropriate checks (such as checking bank details if we can't automatically verify) to protect the money we hold. The last thing we'd want is to pay out your money incorrectly.
In your case I can see that during your previous employments differing information had been provided for you, this in turn led to more than one account being created on our systems. This happens when our system can't quite be sure that both accounts are definitely for you so we need to do some manual intervention (and potentially ask for some evidence from you) so we can be sure before combining the two accounts. This can slow down the payment you've requested however it's important we're certain both accounts are for you to make sure that you're getting all the money you've saved with us.
I certainly see how this could have been seen as being done in stages but hope you can understand why it was necessary in this instance. Unfortunately I can't change what has happened already but I'm glad that you've received the money now. We'll make sure we take any learnings from your case to improve our future service!
