Charged interest on a closed, paid-off account for months without sending a single statement
I paid off my JCPenney card (Synchrony) in full on July 8 using the "full balance" option on their own website. Their phone system confirms the payment, and the account had already been closed.
Two and a half months later, I got a statement for $10.08. It looks like a little interest wasn't included in the "full balance" amount, and Synchrony then added a ~$2 minimum interest charge every month on a closed, paid-off account. They never sent a statement until the balance hit $10.08, so I had no idea anything was owed.
Before that, they lowered my limit and closed my JCPenney, CareCredit, and Petco cards, all paid on time, with no letter or email. I only found out by logging in.
I've filed a written dispute and a CFPB complaint. Warning to anyone paying off a Synchrony card: "pay full balance" may not mean $0. Check the account again a month later.
Paying Down My Balance Actually Hurt My Credit Utilization
I had an $850 credit limit with Synchrony/Amazon and a balance of about $800. I paid over $800 toward the account, and immediately afterward Synchrony reduced my credit limit to $250. This left my remaining balance at nearly 96% utilization, despite having just made a substantial payment. I continued paying the account and ultimately paid it off, only to have Synchrony close the account.
My concern isn't that Synchrony chose not to extend me additional credit. It's that these actions themselves can negatively affect a consumer's credit utilization and credit profile. I've filed a complaint with the CFPB because I believe this practice deserves review and greater transparency.
Worst bank ever well lie to you
Worst bank ever well lie to you. To make you get late payments.
Take your money and not apply it to your bill. And when you ask them why it hasn't been applied, they'll tell you. Oh, you have to pay it in this day in the month for it to be applied. Never tell you that until you pay, just flat out. Thieves with horrible business practices. If you care about your credit and your finances stay far away from them.

Synchrony MasterCard will not register Do not apply for one
I have a couple of their cards, a Lowes card and a OnePay Mastercard. Never had an issue with those. Synchrony sent me an offer for their MasterCard which I accepted. That is where the issues began. I registered the card as soon as I received it. I decided to use it for a few groceries and it came back as unauthorized. I checked on line and somehow, despite having had registered a week ago, it reported as unregistered. I went through the entire process of registering it again. I received notification that it was registered, yet the next time I tried to use it, once again it was declined as unauthorized. I don't know what issues Synchrony is having with registering their MasterCard, but I would not recommend applying for it. Their other cards work fine but they have an issue with their own MasterCard.
Synchrony Lowered My Credit Limit Below…
Synchrony Lowered My Credit Limit Below My Current Balance
I have been a long-time Synchrony Bank customer and have multiple credit card accounts with them. Recently, Synchrony unexpectedly reduced the credit limit on one of my cards to an amount that was actually below my current balance. As a result, my utilization ratio immediately increased and negatively impacted my credit score.
What makes this even more frustrating is that Synchrony did not lower the credit limits on my other accounts, some of which carry higher balances and are not even being actively used. There appears to be no consistency or logic to their decision-making process.
When I called customer service to explain the situation, I was told there was nothing they could do and that my only option was to request a credit line increase. That would require a credit inquiry, which could potentially have an additional impact on my credit. Why should I have to submit to a credit inquiry to correct a credit limit reduction that Synchrony imposed in the first place?
I asked why this particular account was singled out and why my other Synchrony accounts were not treated the same way, but I received no meaningful explanation. As a loyal customer with multiple accounts and a long history with the company, I expected much better treatment and customer service.
This experience has been extremely disappointing. Lowering a customer's credit limit below their existing balance without warning and then offering no reasonable resolution is simply unacceptable. I have lost confidence in Synchrony's handling of customer accounts and credit decisions.

I purchased speakers at SWEETWATER with 0% interest for 48 months. SWEETWATER used Synchrony bank. Without my permission Synchrony Bank added card security to my application. A third party charged $105 every month, then Synchrony bank charged $60 to $90 every month. That’s 34% interest. I’ve called the card security (third party ) will refund the 12 months they’ve charged my account. Synchrony bank is not refund the interest that had been charged to my account without my permission. I WON’T EVER use Synchrony bank again. You need to watch out for this SCAMMER bank!
I review my credit reports regularly
I review my credit reports regularly. I noticed today a drop in credit score from Syncrony so investigated the reason why. The answer it seems is they decreased my credit limit. No real reason why other than their"automated system" made the decision. I reached out to customer service and asked why. No actual answers other than about their system
The only accounts I have with them are for Amazon. I don't use them since the interest rate is too high. I use my American Express instead. That said, these accounts will die out in time. It won't cause me lasting issues as I have Excellent credit and plenty of available credit. It's called using credit responsibly.
Since they would not address the issue I will never use anything they provide in the future and will certainly spread the word about how they treat long-term customers. If I could do zero or negative stars I would for this company.
Beware PayPal MC uses Synchrony Bank
Beware PayPal MC uses Synchrony Bank. I accidentally made a duplicate payment, paying off my entire balance. Because it was a large amount of money, I called immediately to get it back. The initial PayPal rep told me a complaint was filed and I'd get a check in 2-3 weeks. After a month with no check or update, I called again. Another rep informed me that the payment actually went through Synchrony Bank and gave me their number. I called Synchrony and was told the check was just cut yesterday! They have held my money for almost 6 weeks, nothing was ever noted on my account, and no one reached out to me. If I had been late by a day, there would be immediate interest and fees. Synchrony Bank is too big to care about individual customers.
Synchrony's dispute resolution process…terrible!
Synchrony's dispute resolution process is terrible! A merchant made two unauthorized charges to my credit card totaling $8400, and I've had to dispute the transactions 4 times each, after providing documentation that the service was paid by different means. I have spent hours on the phone with their "customer support" reps, who take the same information, apologize, and then just open a new dispute, so the process starts all over again. You're not allowed to talk to an actual decision maker. Then, just when I think the customer support rep understands the issues, I get a denial of my dispute AGAIN! I've uploaded tons of documentation (explanation letter, receipts, text messages, etc.) and I don't think anyone even looks at what I've sent. Absolutely maddening!

Horrible phone service..I verified my information..changed to paperless billing..my account is on autopay..I have 1 credit card balance remaining and I will have a 0 balance..now all of a sudden they don't have my email and will charge me a fee..where were my previous emails sent?..oh they can't tell me that only verify the email I tell them...how dumb is that? You taking my payments without an email...I guess they will see my email on this review and they can verify it's me
Anita the "Account Manager" - Horrid
I spoke with Anita, the account manager, regarding questions about my statement and the large amount of interest added to my account. Unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. I was simply trying to get clarification and request a short extension on my grace period, but she was dismissive and unwilling to help due to “company policy.”
As a loyal Ashley customer for years, I expected much better customer service and flexibility. The process was also frustrating because although most account features are online, I was still required to call back multiple times, making the situation unnecessarily difficult.
Thankfully, I later spoke with another representative who was extremely pleasant and much more helpful, which showed that good customer service is possible. However, my interaction with Anita left such a negative impression that I no longer plan to use Ashley financing in the future. Once this account is paid off, I do not intend to use an Ashley card again.
Great Service by Luz
I worked with Luz on details for disbursing a trust to its benefactor, and she was extremely friendly and helpful. You have a good one with her.
NEVER AGAIN!
NEVER AGAIN! I used Synchrony for a 1 year CD deposit. The rates were competitive, so no problem there, but when it matured it took me FOREVER to get the funds. They had a daily transfer limit of $25,000, but each transfer had to be cleared by the receiving bank before they would let me initiate another one. It took me almost 2 weeks to receive just over 50K in funds.
I think this is on purpose. They hold your money as long as they can in a "pending" status (paying no interest). I have never had that problem with any other bank.
Poor and Worst Customer Service
Customer Service, worst ever. They continue to not represent us in disputes, last time we disputed same problem four times until they said no more on that same issue..
Did not represent us, did not give any reason for denial s although we produced all the information in detail, pictures and everything.
So now, never again as will fund our purchases from Sam's Club and Amazon through another sewrvice.
Synchrony Bank
Hello,
Whatever you do, don't use this bank! They are the worst at making a payment. You have to provide your routing number and your account number, which is horrible! I spent 45 minutes on a phone call trying to make a payment, and I’m closing this account as soon as possible!
5284 - was against helping me; she doesn't care if you get a late payment. Here is me using my lunch to let her know there is an issue. She tells me it's your card, the same card you used to make the first payment.
@amazan, please be aware of this by having them or patching with them.
Trash customer service, trash policies.
If you're having financial trouble and are paying back your debts - make Synchrony the absolute bottom of your priority list. Even if you have years of on-time payments with them, they'll close your account anyway the second your credit score dips and then customer service will tell you that all appeals are basically shredded on sight by upper management. Synchrony seems to pride themselves on giving the finger to you for making sure your accounts with them are current.
Please do NOT apply for a credit…
Please do NOT apply for a credit card/store card overseen by this company, you'll regret it.
First they start with their "New" sign in procedure. All a mess and I ended up having to call to get it sorted out. Then....
I decided a Walmart/OnePay credit card might be a good option for me....Big mistake. I took a day trip, called into a couple of Walmarts in different towns, got home and nipped to Walmart to get dinner. Low and behold my OnePay card was declined "For security reasons".
Three/four weeks later, having to provide a photo of my ID (Front and Back), Facial recognition (Video and Photo Graph) and STILL my card is locked.
I guess the moral is:- If you have a Synchrony credit card/Store card, Do NOT use it in three different towns unless you advise them first and even then they'll probably lock it!
