Hutchins Law recently provided conveyancing services for the sale and purchase of my home. My case was expertly managed by Mark Govinden, supported by Matthew Scully when Mark was on holiday.

Both Mark and Matthew were responsive, communicative and proactive in ensuring my best interests were protected. Exchange and completion were nearly sabotaged by an unresponsive conveyancer elsewhere in the chain but Mark’s proactiveness really saved the day.

I would be delighted to work with Mark again and recommend his services wholeheartedly!

I would be very cautious about any transaction involving retained money

I was involved in a conveyancing transaction where Hutchins Law acted for the seller.

A £1,000 service charge retention was agreed on completion in May 2025. My understanding is that the purpose of a retention is simple: money is held back from the seller’s completion funds so it is available if the relevant liability arises.

After an earlier payment was made in October 2025, £640.33 remained. My solicitor requested release of that remaining balance in May 2026, before the apparent expiry of the retention period, and chased several times in May and June 2026.

What concerns me is that Hutchins Law later indicated in July 2026 that they were contacting/chasing their client and would update once they had “received the retention money”. In my view, that raises a serious question about whether the remaining retention was actually kept available and dealt with in accordance with the agreed retention arrangement.

I raised a formal complaint in July 2026 asking Hutchins Law to explain whether the remaining retention was still held, whether it had been released to the seller, and on what authority. Their response did not answer those questions and simply said they would liaise with my legal representatives.

Although Hutchins Law did not act for me directly, their handling of the retention directly affected me as the buyer. Based on my experience, I would not be comfortable relying on this firm where a transaction involves retained money, undertakings, or post-completion sums.

I have referred my concerns to the SRA.

The response below from Hutchins Law on 7 August is incorrect. My solicitor has been in touch with them throughout. The last email was sent to them on 7 August 2026. Hutchins Law just has not responded.

I am very happy with the service that Matthew Scully provided. He was calm, helpful and hard working. He dealt with every stage quickly and efficiently and I would not hesitate to recommend him.

This is the second time I've used this firm. Ivory Jimmy, our case handler, was brilliant, keeping in touch, reachable by phone, putting pressure on when needed. She was excellent at finding solutions when things did not go to plan. I wish all the other solicitors in our chain were as good as her.

Absolute worst company I have ever dealt with.

My house sale took 6 months and if I did not ring them 1-2 times per week every single week for the past 3 months I am convinced that the process would still be on going.

There were zero communications, and the most of the time I was having to find out information from my estate agent and then go back to Hutchins and ask why things hadn’t been actioned.

I cannot recommend any stronger that you do not choose this company under absolute any circumstances.

As if the lack of communication and endless delays was not bad enough, there was then a discrepancy in the monies paid compared to the completion statement with no acknowledgement or explanation given meaning they had held back some of the money that should have been transferred from the sale. They only rectified this when I threatened to involve the legal ombudsman.

The proceess was easy and smooth with Jasmine that handled my file. Timely update and professional.

Jasmine was extremely responsive and incredible helpful, I will be recommending them to everyone I know and will use them again in the future

Avoid them

These cowboys have been involved in the chain for my sale and purchase.

They refuse to communicate to the other conveyancers in the chain, have spent over a month replying to simple emails asking them to confirm receipt.

The whole process is now into its sixth month with their client, myself and the other person in the chain (along with our conveyors) left in the dark with no communication, no confirmation as to what are the delays etc, and now are heading into the 7th month with no communication from them

Update, it’s taken them 3 weeks to work out their client had emailed the signed contracts etc rather than send the originals by post…. My 7 year old nephew can tell difference between receiving and email and relieving something by post.

After spending / wasting alot of money with other law firms I used Ahmet Uzunoglu at Hutchins for my let to buy and then my house purchase. I cannot recommend Ahmet Uzunoglu & team highly enough. I came to Hutchins & Co in circumstances that were far from straightforward switching firms mid-process on a property purchase that involved a complex AML and source of funds investigation. It would have been easy for things to unravel at that stage, but Ahmet took over with calm, quiet competence and made the transition feel entirely seamless.

Buying property as an overseas buyer is stressful enough without added complications, and Ahmet genuinely made the experience feel manageable - simple things like the whatsapp group for quick communication and status updates.
