Prior to the operation, our experience was very positive. The nurses were extremely kind, helpful and reassuring, and I was very grateful for the way they treated my mum.
Unfortunately, our experience once my mum was taken into theatre was very different. The surgeon was aware that my mum has limited English and that she also has problems with her memory. I had explained beforehand that she may not be able to remember information such as her date of birth, so I was asked to accompany her briefly into the theatre to help confirm her identity.
From the outset, I found the surgeon's manner towards both my mum and me quite abrupt and agitated. I was left with the impression that he was frustrated by the fact that my mum could not speak English fluently and was unable to answer certain questions herself. This made an already anxious and nervous elderly patient feel even more uncomfortable.
My mum was repeatedly told to keep her head still. I completely appreciate that this is necessary during an eye procedure, but she was already extremely nervous and vulnerable. I felt that a calmer and more reassuring approach would have been much more appropriate.
There was also an incident while I was confirming my mum's date of birth. I moved slightly forward towards her and the surgeon reacted by shouting at me. I fully understand that an operating theatre is a sterile environment and that there are areas I must not enter. Had I been calmly asked to step back, I would have done so immediately. There was simply no need to speak to me in the manner that he did.
The atmosphere became so uncomfortable that, after confirming my mum's details, I left immediately because I did not want the situation to escalate. I also felt that the other members of staff in the theatre appeared to pick up on the tension. I want to make it very clear that the other theatre staff were polite and respectful towards us, and my concerns relate specifically to the surgeon's manner and communication.
Most importantly, my mum was very upset by the experience. This was particularly disappointing because when she previously had surgery on her other eye, her experience was completely different. On that occasion, the surgeon was lovely, reassuring and respectful, as were the nurses and theatre staff.
I appreciate that operating theatres are highly controlled environments and that surgeons need patients to follow instructions for their own safety. However, this should not prevent patients particularly elderly, anxious patients with limited English and memory difficulties from being treated with patience, dignity and compassion.
Sadly, because of the way my mum and I were spoken to and how distressed she was left feeling, this experience has significantly affected my confidence in Optegra, and based on this particular experience I would find it difficult to recommend the service to.
I also feel it is important to mention something that made the interaction particularly uncomfortable for me. The surgeon was a younger Arab man, while my mum and I are of South Asian origin. I cannot say with certainty that his behaviour towards us was racially motivated, and I do not want to make an allegation that I cannot prove. However, during the interaction, I personally felt there was a racial undertone in the way we were spoken to and treated. I could be wrong, but that was genuinely how the interaction made me feel, particularly when compared with the respectful and courteous manner shown to us by the other members of staff present.

This was my second eye to be done. I’d been very happy with the first one and expected this to be the same. The clinic was running an hour late and maybe the anaesthetic was wearing off but I felt every little prod during the procedure. The surgeon eventually asked for more anaesthetic. When it was finished I think I was in shock, couldn’t stop shaking and BP off the scale. The nurse was great and got me a drink and let me relax to get me back to normal but she still had to help me back to reception where luckily my husband had come to find me. The optician said that there was a small wound but that it would heal. The actual result is good but it was a rather unpleasant experience.

All the people I had contact with were excellent: professional, caring and friendly.
The procedure went well and I am delighted with the improvement in my vision.

I have nothing but praise for the team who conducted my second cataract surgery. Every single member of the team needs to be commended for their professional, caring attitude. They werexall so helpful and caring and put everyone at their ease.

I'm very pleased with the results, staff were marvellous, just wish the period of time between each procedure hadn't been so long ( even though I rang several times to see if any cancellations) I've spoken to several people who had second one done in a few weeks, elsewhere, . But overall all I was very pleased with the outcome,

Very nice and relaxed atmosphere, all the staff were lovely and kind. Did have to wait awhile for my cataract surgery after all the tests, a few cancellations along the way but that’s understandable. All in all, a good experience. Would recommend Optegra in York.

My recent cataract surgery at Optegra was excellent from the moment I arrived to the time I was discharged. The receptionist was polite and efficient as were the staff before and after the procedure.
