I'm not sure where all the hate comes from..
I'm not sure where all the hate for this online bank comes from. I've been with them since 2008, and 90% of the time when I call, I get hooked up with a real human in the USA that speaks English. Some of the benefits have gotten worse over time (such as international compatibility and charges) but overall they get the job done and you can even open a stock brokerage account with them.
Compatible with Zelle, have a few nifty financial tools, and none of the garbage fees that places like BOA charge.
Dishonest business practices
I contacted Ally Bank ahead of time when I realized I was struggling financially after a job change and pay decrease. I explained my situation, made the payment arrangement they gave me, and paid the exact amount I was instructed to pay.
The only remaining requirement was submitting a form, and that form did not expire until today. Despite that, Ally still reported a missed payment to the credit bureaus before the deadline had even passed.
A negative credit report can affect someone’s housing options, loan approvals, and financial stability for years. Reporting a customer as delinquent while they are actively communicating and complying with the agreed arrangement is incredibly disappointing.
I did everything I was told to do on my end, and I feel completely blindsided by how this was handled.
If ZERO stars were an option...
If I could give it ZERO stars I would for the following reasons:
1. Lease payments sent electronically did not clear for at least two weeks.
2. Had to fight with customer service even after I showed them I paid the lease off two months early before I turned it in.
3. After more than an hour dealing with this, the issue was resolved with NO apology, NO acknowledgment of the time and inconvenience spent trying to rectify this problem. I will NEVER bank with nor recommend anyone bank with Ally again.

I never missed a payment or was even late one single time in 6 years while paying off my car loan. I unexpectedly lost my job and called Ally to see if they could offer some grace and defer a couple of payments at least until my unemployment started coming in. I answered a few questions, let them know my monthly income was $0 and they let me know I didn't qualify. If that's the case, what in the world would qualify you? Mind you I only have about $2,000-$3,000 remaining on my loan. The representative was also very rude to me about the whole situation. Can't wait to be done with Ally and never give them my business again

If I could give (-) stars I would. Totaled my car in November. They threatened me with the entire car cost because they didn’t have everything from progressive quick enough (a month). For three months I made calls, sent messages letting them know gap didn’t have information. All they say is we have it timestamped yes they do.
Then my total on the app dropped to 24xx.. in April. I assumed that was my deductible and interest. Then May 10 it said 3040.xx. Then 0 it’s been sent to a creditor.
Turns out since I didn’t SCREENSHOT those no proof and they refuse to look into it and now say I owe 98xx.xx because gap didn’t pay. Gap still doesn’t have all the paperwork.
No responsibility. No worries or care for the jump. Why would I screenshot what my account amount is? And the fact that you can’t look into that. I’d never trust them again. And they have banking. Better screenshot your bank amounts daily for proof in case they take out 7000 for the fun of it.
I have to call back in 2 days to see if they sent the paperwork and then I’ll have to check the gap website in 7 days to see if they got it and then likely have to call ally again.

Customer service is a complete joke
Customer service is a complete joke. I've signed a contract for an auto loan. The app has the wrong interest rate, the wrong payment compared to the actual contract. When I call the automated answering service and actually talking to someone says the same as the app. When I explain the contract says something different, their only response is to call the dealership and that it is not their problem to correct it. The read off of a script and not listen to anything I've said through the entire interaction. I've called now 6 times in three weeks. 2 of which were the dealership calling them with me sitting across the desk listening to the conversation. They asked dealership to send them the contract I signed via email and they confirmed the email was received. Then that wasn't good enough so it was overnighted in the mail to them. That was week ago. Still no change and Ally says it's the dealerships problem not theirs. Avoid Ally bank.

This company Ally Bank has to be the worst company I have never dealt with, such an unprofessional and ineffective financial company. I am 62 years old and this is by far the worst and most incompetent company; I spent 3 weeks trying to get an issue straightened out with them and they made it so difficult for me. I cannot fathom how a company lacks so much knowledge on somebody’s account when we are dealing with a financial institution. Every time I called to inquire about my account nobody had a clue and I would be put on hold several times. One person told me I had to go to the motor vehicle dept to change my title back into their name and I did so only for the next person to tell me I had to put it into the new finance company’s name. After the weekend I called and they told me I have to put the title back into their name???? There incompetency is almost laughable, but this really put a dent into my financial standing and the stress they put me through is reprehensible. I sincerely have no idea how they are in business. I probably spent over 2 hours on hold with this company throughout this nightmare.
I would not recommend this bank for anything relating to your hard-earned money as they are 100 percent clueless. Very poor communication, extremely frustrating and staff was very uneducated in helping resolve issues, and the online banking experience was outdated and inefficient. There are much better banking options available. Do yourself a favor and do NOT use this bank.
Scammers accepted my deposits and locked me out. Ally has stolen my money
I can confirm other’s complaints about being locked out of their accounts by some overzealous and quite inept fraud department. I’ve just spent a week locked out of my account. After this experience, I’m no longer interested in using their services. I can’t get in contact with anyone at customer service to unlock the account to close it.
I think Ally’s fraud department may be a scam in and of itself. I’ve spent $500 of my time trying to recover my $460 deposit. At this point, I’ve given up on ever seeing my money again. As far as I’m concerned, they just stole my money. How many others have they done this to?
Ally Customer 10+ Years
I have been banking with Ally for over ten years and have had a positive experience. It is unfortunate that there are so many bad reviews for Ally!
I have been able to save to buy a new house, pay down debt, to pay for Christmas, and for other events using Savings Buckets and Money Market Accounts. I've invested for my future using their IRAs, and the checking account allows me to earn interest just for having money in there. I am grateful to have found them and will continue to bank with them.
The only drawback is that since they are an online-only bank, depositing cash is a hassle. Thankfully I live near a Walmart, but it is still a bit of a hassle.
Overall, I'd recommend Ally! They've helped me to become better with managing my money.
No transparency
If you are looking for an auto loan steer clear of this company. They outsource services and have built in excessive fees for everything. I made one payment and refinanced to a company to get a lower rate and better customer service. My one payment cost me over $25 in fees that they were not transparent about. They are not about customer service and only care about the bottom line even if it means treating their customers poorly.
Ally is not your ally
I joined Ally in September 2025 and was brand new to banking on my own. I left Citizens Bank after they closed my account due to inactivity and Ally was the bank I always wanted. Less than six months later they closed my accounts over a dispute I filed in good faith. On February 4th, 2026 I purchased a Michael Kors coat on eBay for $176.03. The package arrived five days late on the 18th instead of the 13th. The seller was dismissive and uncooperative the entire time. They claimed it was already delivered based on a carrier scan, but scans are often logged before a package even reaches your door. I contacted USPS twice like the seller suggested and reached out to eBay multiple times. Nothing was resolved fairly. I accepted a partial refund of $35.01 only because I felt pressured and completely out of options. That amount does not come close to covering what I went through. I came to Ally with honest explanations and real evidence. The disputes department decided it looked like fraud and closed all of my accounts. My account closes permanently on June 8th, 2026. I called to appeal and I was on the phone crying, explaining that I am new to banking and would never intentionally do something like this. I have been scammed before and I would never put someone else through that. The agents believed me, stayed on the phone for almost two hours, and noted it in my file. But the disputes department said their decision was final with no appeal process and no way to submit additional evidence. There was no path forward given to me at all. They told me I could rejoin Ally after this but I have lost all trust and will be banking elsewhere. Customer support was average at best and always depended on who you got. This experience has been exhausting and heartbreaking. Ally says they're on your side. That is not what this felt like.

This is a terrible company to work with. They barely speak English. I am trying to get a 10 day payoff letter, they either habe to mail it (Which would take 10 days to get) the other option is a secure message in the app. I've been waiting two days for that so far. This company is a joke.
Customers no longer matter
What happened to this company. It was great 15 years ago when I opened an account from overseas.
The most recent fumble is calling an attempted transaction to buy an airline ticket fraud, yet released the money anyways to an airline who never sent me any email with a booking or anything. Finally they said pay for it or we shut your account down. I am stuck with this bank as my Social Security is auto deposited there. Where is the support as one of their valued customers as they call us? I wish they would actually go to work for us.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Ally Auto regarding a recent payment extension request. I followed the process exactly as instructed—initiating the extension online and making the required partial payment to move forward. After doing so, I was told I needed to call in to finalize the extension and sign the contract.
During multiple phone calls, I was repeatedly assured that the payment I had already made would be applied toward the finalized extension agreement. To be responsible, I continued calling weekly to confirm everything was properly processed. Each time, I was led to believe the situation was handled.
However, on the 30th day—when my payment officially became late—I was suddenly told by the Ally team that my extension had not been completed and that I would need to start over, sign a new contract, and pay the fee again. This directly contradicts everything I was told throughout the process.
This level of miscommunication and mishandling is unacceptable. I did everything within my power to stay in good standing, yet I am now facing negative consequences, including damage to my credit score, through no fault of my own.
Because of this experience, I have lost trust in Ally and am actively looking to refinance my loan with another institution. I would not recommend Ally to others based on how poorly this situation was handled.
