I won a car at auction

I won a car at auction. it had an old registration no title. the seller could not produce a bill of sale or proof of ownership. Bring a trailer tried to make this my fault. Kept my buyer’s fee and banded me from the site because I did not complete the sale. I would have never been able to get a totle. Buyer beware their customer service is a joke

I purchased a 63 Coupe for 150K car…

I purchased a 63 Coupe for 150K car about a month ago. Then i paid BaT another 7500.00. Then transport.
Car was represented as right quarter panel only being replaced. Owner stated passenger quarter only replaced. This is in the ad! Car was supposed to come with;
spare shifter console
origional rims
origional shifter
2 set of hubcaps
jack
Car shows up with none of the above included. I inspect the underside of the car and find both quarters replaced, lots of damage in the rear light panel and the drivers door has alot of diced window glass at the bottom.
I figure all this affects the price around 25K. Condition is of course everything.
I contacted BAT and they were sorry to hear about my bad experience, then nothing.
I cotactacted the seller and be turned into a raving prick......
BaT never again. At this point i think ebay is a step above!!

I thought it prudent to pay the white glove fee since I had never bought or sold on BAT. I was assured by my white glove specialist, Roland Halim that he would assist throughout the listing and auction process.
It became apparent that he knew little about vintage cars, although he claimed to have 8 years experience at BAT.
The very first thing they needed was a copy of the title and some photos of the car, including the VIN plate. I sent them a detailed history of the car going back 50 years as I was the owner for that period.
They accepted the car for auction, and I paid the white glove fee, but from that point on, the process was lackadaisical at best.
They wouldn't read my detailed history until photos were taken by their chosen photographer.
It took 3 weeks to be introduced to their photographer and schedule a photo shoot . They asked numerous questions about the car, which had been answered within the detailed history. They also asked a lot of questions which had no relevance whatsoever to a 60 year old car regardless of make.
They sent me a copy of the proposed listing description for my approval and I approved.
At the 11th hour, just prior to going live they sent notice that they thought there was a possible error with the title VIN. This is 3 weeks after they recieved the requested title copy & VIN photo.
The publish time was delayed until the next day while I looked into the matter. According to our State Title Bureau everthing was correct and done in accordance with their protocols.
The auction finally went live and to my shock, without prior knowledge nor my approval they changed the wording in the description to alert potential buyers that the listed VIN may have issues. In essence they slandered my title in spite of assurances from our DMV that everything was in order. To further demonstrate their arrogance or stupidity the altered the VIN for my car to their liking.
Instead of greeting potential buyers on the 1st day of the auction I was reduced to defending the paperwork that BAT unilaterally decided was flawed.
Throughout the process, my white glove specialist was hard to reach and essentially hands off until the final day when he urged me to drop the reserve which wouldn't likely be met in part to BAT's claimed flawed title.
The entire process was fraught with inconsistencies and was a complete waste of time and money.
Lesson learned and my other rarer and more sought after vehicles will never see light of day on BAT under my watch.

No representation from BaT

No representation from BaT. Purchased at 1978 F250 that was terribly misrepresented. Rust, no E breaks, bed not attached, some sort of weird coating wiped on paint,
I thought BaT was supposed to verify the sellers? Anyone can sell garbage on BaT at an inflated price.
2nd purchase from BaT. Screw me once, shame on you, screw me twice, shame on me. There won’t be a third time.

I bought a car less than a year ago off…

I bought a car less than a year ago off the BAT site. I know the site says you can request an inspection, but with an auction only in one week, it is hard to get a quick flight to just check out a car or to drive many hours or days to see it.

Seller stated the car was in great mechanical condition. I specifically asked seller if the car had any kind of gas or oil leaks. I was told no. Pictures also did not show all the scratches or flaws on the car.

Car arrived smelling like a gas can. Gas tank was leaking gas really bad. Carburetor was also leaking, but the seller description said the carb was rebuilt. It was also leaking oil and had many flaws on the exterior that were not shown. Said clutch was replaced, but clutch all messed up. The front end is all out of whack and no way is car safe to drive. Contacted seller afterwards and he denied any knowing about any of those things. WOW!!

There is ZERO protection for buyers. After the bid price I paid almost an EXTRA 10k for BAT fees, delivery, and taxes on the car and I CANNOT EVEN DRIVE IT. 😡

I seen a comment on here that BAT is just a car dealer dumping ground. I believe it. After buying the car I found out that the seller owned a dealership where he had the car stored. So he had to know the car was leaking gas and oil!! Probably why no one bought it from his dealership. He also said he used someone else’s ID to
sell the car on BAT, so I am sure that there is bidding from these kind of people to raise the price. It will cost me a small fortune to fix this car if I can ever find someone to even do it. I will never buy another car from these auction sites. The sellers cannot be trusted, so it is a big rip off for the buyers.

BEWARE and BE AWARE.

Sellers

Sellers: understand the reserve mechanic and the calendar before you pay

I've been on both sides of BaT and I'd caution any seller to go in with eyes open.

As a buyer, I paid $18,000 plus transport for a 1986 Mercedes 560SL — roughly $20,000 delivered. It then needed close to $7,750 in mechanical work, including timing chain, tensioner, rails, and a full A/C recommissioning. That's on me as much as anyone; you buy as-is. But Previous seller was not truthful. BaT was made aware and did nothing. They said we are sorry this happened to you.

When I went to sell the same car on the same platform, my proposed reserve was rejected and in 2025 i was offered a reserve of $21,000 - car did not sell. Highest bid was $13,250.
When I tried to sell it again in 2026 i was offered a $13,000 reserve which was insulting and after some back and forth BaT went to $18,000 reserve which i felt extremely pressured to accept and never confirmed that number with me before posting. That is under half what I had into it. I drove the car 1,000 miles total. Two things sellers need to understand, because neither is obvious:

**First, the timing.** My 2026 auction was scheduled over Labor Day weekend and closed at 10:38 AM Pacific. That is a bad slot on both counts. Holiday weekends thin out the bidder pool, and a late-morning weekday close misses the evening window when BaT bidding is most active. If you're given a date, look at it hard and push back before you pay the listing fee. The calendar is not a minor detail — it directly determines who is watching when your clock runs out.

**Second, the reserve is a ceiling, not just a floor.** If bidding falls short, BaT gives you a 24-hour window to offer the high bidder a price — and that price cannot exceed your reserve. So a number you accepted reluctantly as a minimum becomes the absolute maximum you're permitted to ask afterward. There is no path back to your real number.

My auction closed at $14,000. My own comps — six documented service records, verified 108,322 actual miles, both tops — support meaningfully more. I declined and kept the car.

I'm not claiming I was deceived. The terms are in writing. But the practical effect is a system where a seller gets anchored to a number the platform sets, in a window the platform chooses, with no room to move afterward. Know both before you pay.

My personal experience with Bringatrailer.com.

My personal experience with BringaTrailer has been a frustrating one. Firstly, the excessive moderation in the comments section literally creates a dynamic where the buyer can't ask pertinent questions about the condition of the vehicle without finding themselves moderated for such. Personally, I asked a simplistic question on one auction vehicle. Has the timing belt been replaced due to the age of the vehicle? That question was removed by moderation. Another example was the seller provided images of their vehicle. In one image it was clear, that a paneling of the quarter panel was unhinged. I asked the question "In image 138 is the paneling in fact, unhinged from the vehicle?" That question was moderated and removed. When I emailed BAT about this moderation issue I was incurring. They stated my account is moderated because "It appears your comments are in one way or another attempting to sway possible bidding due to the content of my questioning." This system they have in place is dysfunctional and is unfairly marketed to where a potential buyer can't gather the amount of accurate details one would need to make a responsible bid for a vehicle. I highly recommend people go elsewhere for finding their next vehicle of choice.

I purchased a vehicle through BaT from…

I purchased a vehicle through BaT from Collectible Classics based in PA. The vehicle arrived with extreme engine issues putting it out of commission while undergoing diagnostics and repairs being made . Multiple attempts to contact BaT and the Seller via email and phone messages resulted in merely being ghosted/ignored. There was response provided from BaT stating they would contact the seller and that was the last time I heard from them. The seller must have heard from them because I did receive a phone call from them stating my emails went to their "junk email", they apologized and said they'd be back in touch. Two months later and I'm still awaiting a response,,, and yes, I've reached out them multiple times. BaT obviously has no control over their sellers and are only in it for the 5%. The Seller" Collectible Classics" based out of PA openly admitted to not inspecting the vehicles they sell because they have no mechanics or technicians on their staff. They like BaT are only in it for the money... So, BUYER BEWARE! You are taking a financial risk if you choose to purchase through either of these companies. They do not care about your problems but are happy to pass them blindly along!

DEALER DUMPING GROUND

It started out to be a good site, now it seems it is just a dumping ground for dealers, they claim to show the true car through pictures, the car we bought looked like it had gone through the jungle, the person who took the pictures seemed to have gone out of his way not to show all of the scratches. Very expensive to buy off of with no real service.

Takes WAY to long to list a vehicle

Takes WAY to long to list a vehicle, NO communication except through emails which take a LONG time to answer and receive, we sold a vehicle on here and did ok Just ok, again it took WAY too long to list it with them, a simple phone call from customer service that could take a couple minutes I think is in order, instead of waiting weeks for back and forth useless emails...

A typical San Francisco bay area leftist organization that censors everything they don't like

A typical San Francisco bay area leftist company that heavily censors users to promote dishonest sellers and outright fraud. I have bought 5 cars from BAT sellers and the experience has gone from bad to worse each time. No more. If something goes wrong, there's no recourse, and BAT censors any comments that don't shed a positive light on the seller, exactly like Amazon and ebay. Buyer opinions are irrelevant. Fraudulent sellers are supported. Sure, there are some bad actors posting troll comments, but those are easily distinguished from knowledgeable experts who are also censored for warning bidders about a problematic seller and their bad faith listings. I have to walk away from this company. I don't trust them any longer.

I have both bought and sold vehicles on…

I have both bought and sold vehicles on Bring a Trailer. Overall I am satisfied once the auction is complete. But BaT's staffing and customer service have not kept pace with the site's phenomenal growth. No one answers phone calls and they don't even pretend to try. Instead, everything is handled through email and it can take days to get a response and weeks to get a vehicle through their multi-step listing process. This is a 2026 company stuck in a pre-1990 mindset, but if you have the patience to wait them out, you will in the end discover what the market truly thinks your car is worth, and that can be a surprisingly pleasant and exciting experience. Too bad getting there is such drudgery!

One of the worst bidding experiences.

One of the worst bidding experiences I have had, with over 20 years buying cars. If you are a buyer with a concern, it is dismissed, even if the seller misrepresented the vehicle and in many ways and falsified maintenance records. They take no accountability - you might as well setup a local bid on that 99 Supra down the street, it's like that.

I bid on and won a Ducati motorcycle that was ridiculously misrepresented by the seller "The Obsidian Collection" based out of Yuma Arizona and a "dealer." They refused to hold the seller accountable to multiple proven falsified maintenance records and other misinformation (with sms proof from the seller). Upon pickup, the bike had a bad battery, multiple missing parts not described or shared in the listing, body damage not shown, no brake lights, tires that were under inflated to 16psi... The list goes on and one.

Once reported, BAT stopped responding aleven after I provided pictures, video and clear call outs.

This auction site is just a smokescreen for the owner to make money on the fees. Don't be fooled, these guys also alter bid times to help sellers and don't follow their own guidelines.

I did not use BAT

I did not use BAT. But after reading the reviews, Craigs list looks like the land of Eden. Just my take on things after selling cars for some 55 years. never saw deception like it exists today. You have to be at your best to play in todays arena. OR, you could lose your shirt. After I bought my Jag from a Dealer mind you in FLA, the guy was slammed into jail after defrauding a guy on his Cobra, it was a consign. That was a close one for me, as the car was delivered Withiout a Title which came some 18 days later. Buyer Beware!!!

Complete waste of money

Complete waste of money. No support as I was tortured in the comments for no reason. On the contrary, felt actively sabatoged by BaT as I was unable to respond to valid questions due to BaT not allowing me to reply right up until my auction ended with a joke of result below reserve. I could have done better on Facebook marketplace...

Never again will I use Bring a Trailer

A car I bought through Bring a Trailer from the Euroclassica cars in pompano beach Florida has been so misrepresented on Bring a Trailer I feel totally Ripped off. Apparently Bring a Trailer does not Vet the sellers. And I couldn’t even drive it when it arrived. Had to be flat bedded straight to a repair shop. It literally had no coolant in the radiator. And they also lied about the mileage. I will never buy a car again off Bring a Trailer. Apparently any lying butthole can sell a car on their website. Shame on Bring a Trailer and Euroclassica.

You are better off using Craigslist than this lame service that charges insane fees for listing cars when they provide 0 value to buyers. I bought a car on here that was totally misrepresented and there isn’t even a way to rate sellers to warn others. Never use this site!
