Don’t kid yourself – this scheme isn’t about helping you pay your university fees, it’s about chaining you to debt for life. The interest rates they slap on are nothing short of extortionate.
Their customer service is abysmal, and the website never updates properly. They’ll charge you more interest than you actually owe, and then fob you off with lies over the phone or by email.

If you want to do something meaningful with your life, fine – but do not go to university unless it’s for a course with a very clear and practical outcome, like economics, medicine, engineering, or law. Otherwise, you’re signing yourself up for a parasitic relationship with the government.

And don’t be lulled into the whole “don’t worry, the debt’s wiped after 30 years” line. Think about what it actually means: your salary reduced by £150–£300 or more every single month, while the debt quietly piles up with interest. That’s not help, that’s a shackle. Use your money wisely.

I would give 0 but apparently your not allowed. The most unhelpful company I have ever had the misfortune of having to deal with and that's the problem -you have to deal with them. They know this and genuinely don't care how unhelpful they are, rude and try to complicate even the most basic of things,. Lucky if anyone speaks English and the ones that do are just as unhelpful.

A family member is trying to sort out a loan for a degree. He has secured a place at an amazing University and we are all so happy for him. However this is being jeopardised by SLC due months of absolute horror of dealing with SLC. They are incompetent, rude, disrespectful, dismissive and as if this is not enough they utterly contradict themselves. No one knows the definitive answer to simple questions and Managers hide from the very people they should be helping.
I cannot believe this company is allowed to continue in business and why the Government has not looked into it. It’s a national disgrace and needs shutting down.
I am contacting my MP regarding this dreadful company.

A ruined graduation day we will never get back. My son was elated to get his degree, even got student of the year...went to get his certificate only to be told they couldn't release it due the fees not being paid which was a massive shock. My son was devastated and the rest of the day was spent on the phone to SLC to people who blamed my son although 2 assistants managed to work out it was their error but generally none of them read the notes properly. The plans with family who had travelled long distances were all cancelled and the afternoon was spent trying to support my very upset son.
Still awaiting for the to retrospectively agree the tuition fees again.
The stress and disappointment of this who scenario has been hideous.
He had no correspondence that they'd cancelled them. They'd made an admin error and still haven't rectified it. Everyone you speak to tells you you have to wait longer. At the moment I'm worried despite them having previously agreed the fees they won't reagree them as I fear they can't understand their own system. I'm so upset about the whole thing and still my son has no degree.
It's made me very low. I feel noone understood on the phone that we had one of the best days of his life ruined.
So hope this can be resolved.

I cannot express in words how truly dissatisfied I am with the student loans company. Baring in mind you pay off student loan once you earn over a certain amount threshold, that comes out of our wages... I have been harrased for money. Once they got a taste of me paying money they felt they were entitled to it every month. Since coming back I have paid their fees for £15 a month and have explained I am now unemployed since returning to the UK. Still they continue to charge me this fee? Purely incompetent, obviously not updated the file since our last conversation where I let them know this.

Terrible line when calling about cancelling repayment of my student loan and adviser was quite unclear. Asked to repay via direct debit but was told I would not be eligible, so would need to continue paying through PAYE, then have the money refunded through payroll, and that SLC would put an automatic stop on repayments through PAYE by notifying HMRC. Sounds like it will take a long time to receive the refund and I wasn't left with a lot of confidence that payments through PAYE would automatically stop.

Honestly awful- trying to support my son’s application. Despite repeated attempts, the adviser wouldn’t slow down, and the information was next to useless. He clearly knew what he was talking about, but didn’t seem to grasp the concept, despite repeated reminders and stoppages, that this was confusing for me and he needed to go slower and break things down- And I have two degrees myself! I shudder to think the sheer number of parents supporting an application that haven’t got the correct amount of money, because something has been omitted or missed out!

tried to cosign for nieces $32k student loan with sallie may. have 800 credit score - 1 million + tax return - no debt etc etc They quoted an 18%+ rate !!!!!!!!!!!!!! TALK ABOUT PREDATORY LENDING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd give zero if I could, don't seem to care that they may have a data breach. Complete brick wall when you attempt to escalate an issue. Unhelpful staff who seem to find it funny to keep you hanging on the phone as long as possible. Managers that hide behind the call handlers.

I was appalled by this company. I was pestered by email and text and when I phoned up, I couldn't even work out how much the sum of money was that I apparently owed. Two people hung the phone up on me. Their attitude was one of disregard. I would never touch this company again. This is once again proof in a cost of living crisis, how one company treats people is disgusting.

If I could give a 0 I would!! for approximately 9 years I have been fighting with students loan company regarding a law degree that I applied for and became seriously ill a week later, I called the college that is now non existent who informed me they would cancel everything and inform the student loan company since I was in hospital, a few years later I received a letter stating I owed over 5 thousand, I have spent several months and years on the phone to these idiots to sort this out. They said for me to get in touch with the college, (I had already told them that it was now non existent!) So now I am yet again going back and forth to rectify this! I did go to see citizens advice who said that this is the responsibility of the student loan company since it was a five year course and they kept paying the said college without any written or verbal communication with myself!! I am now expecting a private pension and the pension company said HMRC would take this money out of my pot!!! for a course I did not attend, for books I did not receive, for a degree I never got!!!

Trying to contact anyone is a nightmare. Terrible service and processes.

Worse experience ever! Customer service is completely useless!

Called due to received email on details that needed clarification. Considering I had done that prior, wanted to have it checked out in case of any phishing or user error from my side. Got connected quickly and Luke supported amazingly, clarified and checked everything. Ensured that all my enquiries were answered to the best extent (considering I called from overseas, might as well utilize the Customer Support to clarify smaller details). Amazing representative, helpful and positive outcome! Thank you!

Tried to contact SLC multiple times to discuss an issue that isn't straight forward and every time I get a recorded message saying there's no need to speak to them. Customer service is appalling.

Impossible to speak to anyone and the virtual advisor was so incredibly rude and unhelpful. She cut the chat without warning despite not helping solve the issues. No accountability with the staff. Used to be a great team and always someone to speak to. Now a dismal service. Shame students education is impacted.

Can't even get started - the login details (reference number and password) they sent me don't work. And then I receive an email from them about someone else's child, asking for details, along with details of someone else's income! I can't even log on, and it's already gone badly wrong. Astonished

As bad as it can get. The person on the phone also refused to let me speak with a manager. Absolutely not fit for purpose.

It’s often important to get a written record of an enquiry/response when dealing with loans, so it’s common to choose email or live chat. SLC refuse to give out an email address or have a live chat and instead force you to contact them via social media. They say to contact them Facebook or X. Or by post? Ridiculous options for when you just have a simple enquiry to make but want to get an answer securely in writing. They are then very unhelpful and say they can’t help you on social media, presumably because it’s not secure. I didn’t want to contact them on social media in the first place. Awful customer service as many others are saying. They need to get secure email address or a live chat service (not a robot though) like other companies manage to do when helping customers with their enquiries.

I have spent nearly two years fighting the Student Loans Company just to access the Disabled Students’ Allowance support I was legally entitled to. Their handling of my application has been an absolute disgrace full of contradictions, delays, misinformation, and systemic failure.

I was approved and then denied multiple times, sent in circles, forced to resubmit the same evidence repeatedly, and ignored when I raised concerns. They even arranged and completed a needs assessment, only to later claim it was a “mistake.” The entire experience has left me exhausted, distressed, and academically impacted. I’ve failed assessments because I didn’t have the tools or support I was assessed for.

An Independent Assessor has now confirmed that the SLC were wrong to deny me DSA (the first time despite being married to a UK national) and that they misapplied the law. Their own official found that their communication was “muddled and incorrect” and that they made “fundamental errors” in my case. Still, I’m left to deal with the consequences of their actions, including lost academic time, mental health struggles, and financial hardship. Disabled students deserve better than this. If you’re vulnerable or need support, beware this system is not designed to protect you, and getting help from the SLC may break you before it supports you.
