Thetimes.co.uk hosts the digital edition of The Times, Britain’s oldest national daily newspaper, and its sister title The Sunday Times. The Times was founded in 1785 by the editor and publisher John Walter I, “to record the principal occurrences of the times” for the service of the public. It was called the Daily Universal Register for the first three years, until it rebranded as The Times in 1788 – the first newspaper in the world to use the Times name. In his first edition, John Walter I explained that “like a well-covered table, it should contain something suited to every palate” including politics, foreign affairs, matters of trade, legal trials, advertisements and “amusements”. In its tone and political neutrality, Walter reserved the right of the newspaper “to censure or applaud either [political party]” and to cover contending issues with respectful “fair argument”. More than 200 years on, these founding principles hold true today. The Times has supported both New Labour and the Conservatives in recent times and supported Remain in the 2016 EU referendum. The titles are currently the biggest selling quality print newspapers in the UK and in 2018 The Times was named Britain’s most trusted national newspaper by the Reuters Institute for Journalism at Oxford University. In 2019 The Times and The Sunday Times won the Daily and Sunday newspaper of the year categories at the British Press Awards among several other prizes for their writing, reporting, investigations and campaigns. Both papers are committed to driving digital innovation in all areas of their world-class journalism.

Criminal company, NEVER sign up!!

Criminal company, stay AWAY. I cancelled my account and wham I see £30 charge. Contact them and they say they have no record. This is how they make profit…not by good journalism, but by FRAUD!!! maybe their journalists should investigate criminal tactics by their employer to steal money. NEVER sign up with them

Refusal of refund

I have just gone onto my bank account to see that there had been 2 payments of £30 for the last two months coming out of my account to the Times. I called them to cancel and request a refund but they were blankly refusing saying that I had signed the terms and conditions. They didn’t even check whether I used that account for the last two months, which I did not as wasn’t even aware that I had an account! They just refused the refund. That’s how £60 voluntary donation went to them without my 100% consent.

Firstly the news is mediocre and trashy…

Firstly the news is mediocre and trashy in it headlines for click bait, it is as though they are scrambling for "news". Their subscription while has offers is difficult to manage and slow to answer questions. Lastly I am not sure why they are soooo pedantic with deleting comments in reviews with no reason other than "didnt follow community guidelines" when there is no apparent violation, this is a widespread criticism from many readers. I will not be re-subscribing

Cynical, money making, tactics.....not impressed

Having signed up for an offer of £99.00 for a 1 year subscription, which I was happy with, I now find that I have been charged £30.00 as the first monthly payment of an ongoing subscription, which I don't want. I phoned to query this and cancel, and request a refund, but they will not do this! Disgusting, cynical, behaviour, by what was once a respected publication. In this digital age, how difficult can it be to notify customers that their particular deal is coming to an end and so give them time to review it?

Rip Off merchants

Rip Off merchants
Relying on auto-renew have charged me a full month's subscription of £30 and won't let me cancel before the month's end when just a day after the auto-renew for a newspaper I don't look at and as they acknowledge I 've been receiving nothing from (having cancelled the emails and I thought but clearly not the service) as its a chronically bad newspaper - just a mouthpiece for plutocrat tosh.

Scammers

Absolutely shameful company. I paid a £1 for 3 months and obviously forgot I was paying the subscription at all - without warning, they take £30 and no matter what I say (that I won't use it, that it was unlawful of them to take my money without notifying me that my trial period was about to end) they will not refund me. They seem to think they can operate above trading standards and are obviously banking on people forgetting about them so they can pocket your money. They do not honour cooling periods and they will NOT notify you two days before you are due to pay again.

I am hoping that the new laws surrounding subscriptions will put a stop to the nonsense these companies get away with. It is purely set up this way to take people's money quietly so they can do nothing about it. Horrid.

I was stupid enough to take a trial…

I was stupid enough to take a trial subscription. I didnt expect to have to endure the shadest of shady business practices adopted by The Times.

I have emailed them a number of times asking them to cancel my subscription but no reply, you have to call a number. When I call the number I am told that all they can hear is buzzing.

My phone works fine when I make and receive many calls every day. The only people who have a problem is the Times WHO YOU MUST TELEPHONE TO CANCEL YOUR SUBSCRIPTION.

I think that this needs to be publicised far and wide so that, how low and far the mighty have fallen, The Times, have indeed fallen.

Woeful customer service

Woeful customer service. 4 times I've contacted them, 3 times on chat funcrion, get left hanging for 35 minutes and then drops off. Then get fobbed off with non answers. Called customer service and my goodness the guy just couldn't seem to understand what I was saying about the glitches in the app. Absolute joke so I cancelled my subscription

The times will lure you in then screw you

The times will lure you in with the offer of a cheap trail period. When this ends they will not notify you, but instead move to their ridiculous package of 30 pounds a month. If they are unable to take this payment they will refuse to allow the subscription to be cancelled until it has been taken. Also the only way to cancel is via phone, being put on hold for ages. Nothing technically illegal, just pushing the boundaries of how predatory they can be without breaking the law.

Feels like a complete scam - avoid

I signed up after being lured in by the £1 offer, only to find myself suddenly being charged around £30 a month. The whole experience feels deliberately designed to make it easy to subscribe and incredibly difficult to leave.

Trying to actually speak to someone who could help was a nightmare. When I finally got through to customer services, the experience was shockingly unprofessional. One representative, Mady N, was laughing and joking with colleagues in the background and making unprofessional comments while I was trying to resolve the issue and cancel my subscription for good.

For a newspaper with The Times’ reputation, I expected far better. The subscription process, the charges and the difficulty getting meaningful help have left such a bad impression that it has honestly put me off ever even reading The Times again.

An absolute farce. I’d strongly recommend anyone considering the £1 offer reads the subscription and cancellation terms very carefully before signing up.

How is this legal?

Insane that you can't just cancel a subscription online.

They made me ring up, and then the line to cancel was "too busy" so it literally just said "try again later".

I don't know how this isn't against some kind of law.

Shocking job trying to cancel

Shocking job trying to cancel. Why is it that customer service answers straight away but the cancellation department puts you in a massive queue? And then instead of making it simple, you have to answer multiple questions and listen to an array of ever diminishing priced offers to try to persuade you not to leave? Best advice is if they put you in a queue is to Chat Message them and ask them to call you which to be fair, they did do immediately. (Also don’t like that the advisor said “How often have you looked at the paper?” And then “I can see you have looked at it quite often…” Did not like the sound of them monitoring from afar!)

Impossible to cancel

I bought a digital subscription to The Times. There is no provision for canceling the subscription online. I messaged them on WhatsApp and was never contacted to an adviser after receiving an automated message that they were connecting me. I was in queue on live chat for hours. And I called internationally only to get a message that they were experiencing high call volumes. What a scam!

Awful

Awful - overpriced subscription and they make it very difficult to cancel. Cant do it in app or online you have to phone an 0800 number and go through to a cancellation team. They then grill you on why you want to cancel and ask for feedback, just a waste of everyones time. No wonder it's £30 a month if they're paying call centre staff to process a sub cancellation in 2026!

Absolute disgrace

Absolute disgrace. If you used the £1 for 3months subscription, make sure to cancel at least 2days BEFORE the next subscription as you will be charged £30 without refund–it will be very difficult to cancel. After that period, once you have been charged, you will ABSOLUTLY NOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK whatever you do, so don't waste your time.

Ps. Use their WhatsApp service. Do not email or all their 0800 telephone number, as it will take ages.

Fake news

Fake news. They wrote an article with lots of false information and couldn't even get my name right. The Sunday Times is the reason I don't trust the media anymore. Their 'researchers' were biased and happily misrepresented facts and gladly published false and misleading information.

I subscribed to The Times' digital…

I subscribed to The Times' digital offer for £1 a month for three months simply to read a single article. I completely forgot about the subscription until I noticed a £30 renewal charge.
As soon as I realised what had happened, I contacted customer services, explained the situation honestly, and asked for a goodwill refund. I also explained that I had not intentionally used the renewed subscription.
Despite multiple emails and an escalation, every response was essentially a template quoting the terms and conditions. There was no willingness whatsoever to exercise any discretion or consider the individual circumstances. Instead, I was repeatedly told that because the payment had already been taken, no refund would be considered.
What concerns me most is that after looking on here, I discovered many other customers describing exactly the same experience. That suggests this isn't an isolated incident but a recurring issue with their introductory offers and automatic renewals.
To make matters worse, they repeatedly told me to phone to cancel my subscription, despite me making it clear in writing that I wanted it cancelled immediately. Email should be perfectly adequate for cancelling a subscription.
For a national newspaper, I'd have expected far better customer service and a little common sense. Instead, they've chosen to lose a customer and damage their reputation over a £30 charge.
I certainly won't be subscribing again, and I would urge anyone considering one of their introductory offers to set a reminder to cancel well before the renewal date—or better still DON'T SUBSCRIBE AT ALL!

Absolutely shocking

Absolutely shocking! Trying to escape their subscription service is like a labyrinth. They make it hard as possible to cancel and even when you do you get bombarded with comms to re-join. No self service options and everything done by phone. Its all smoke and mirrors to keep you paying. Never again!

Subscription scam

Like everyone else here. Issues with The Times subscription scam.
Rejecting law about 14-day cooling period , I contacted the next day.

Under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCCA), companies are legally required to ensure that exiting a contract is straightforward and free of unnecessary hurdles . They do not follow
According to gov.uk
A company cannot force you to phone a call center, wait in endless live-chat queues, or navigate a maze of hidden menus just because you clicked a single button to subscribe.
Painful call centre and rude agent telling you you were too stupid to not read all the tiny T&Cs
