Excessive Fees, and Extra Charges That Feel Exploitative
I recently had to take my dog, to Vets Now Alresford/Winchester for an out‑of‑hours emergency appointment. Anyone who has been in that situation knows the emotional state you’re in — scared, stressed, desperate to get help for the animal you love. You’re not thinking about money; you’re thinking about keeping them safe.
The consultation lasted no more than 15–20 minutes, yet I was charged £380. That works out to an effective hourly rate of £1,140–£1,520! In the moment, you just hand over your card because you’d do anything for your pet — but afterwards, it’s hard not to feel shocked.
Then today came an additional £35 admin fee just for them to submit the insurance claim form, on top of the £380,what was that for. There is absolutely no way it can cost so much. This was followed by a further £1,800 bill once the full treatment costs were processed.
What makes this even harder to swallow is the scale of the company behind these charges. According to Companies House,
Vets Now Emergency Limited reported £15.7 million profit after tax in their latest accounts, it seems they do a lot of form filling. Their parent company, IVC Evidensia, is a huge private‑equity‑backed group generating:
- £3.5 billion in revenue, and
- £783 million in EBITDA,
with major investors including Nestlé, who hold a significant stake.
When you see numbers like that, it’s difficult not to feel that companies like this are playing on owners’ emotions. They know we love our animals. They know we will say yes to anything in an emergency. They know we have no real choice when our pets need help. And the pricing reflects that power imbalance.
Emergency care is always going to be expensive — I understand that. But the combination of extremely high consultation fees, extra admin charges, and the enormous profits behind the brand leaves a very uncomfortable feeling. It doesn’t feel like care; it feels like a business model built on people’s fear and love for their pets.

Thank you for responding. My concern is not simply that out‑of‑hours care costs more — it is the scale of the charges and the lack of transparency around them. A consultation fee of over £300, before any treatment is even given, places owners under significant financial pressure at a moment when they are distressed and focused solely on their pet’s wellbeing.
What your reply doesn’t acknowledge is the emotional vulnerability inherent in these situations. The FCA defines vulnerability as circumstances where a customer’s ability to make informed decisions is impaired by stress, anxiety, or emotional strain. That is exactly the position pet owners are in during an emergency.
On top of the consultation fee, the £35 insurance administration charge was added despite me stating at the time that I would not be paying it, and before I even know whether my insurer will approve the claim. Presenting this as a standard, unavoidable fee does not reflect the conversation I had in person and on the telephone with your operative.
You’ve cited the higher costs of running an out‑of‑hours service, but there is no acknowledgement that Vets Now is financially performing very well from this model. It feels disingenuous to justify these charges purely on operational cost when the company clearly benefits significantly from the current pricing structure.
Many veterinary practices do not charge an additional fee for processing insurance claims, and the CMA has recently highlighted concerns about unclear or excessive veterinary fees. My experience aligns with those concerns.
I have already contacted your customer support team, but I wanted to ensure my experience is visible here so other pet owners are aware of the additional fees that may be added at a time when they are already under emotional strain.

We arrived at Farnham vets now and they were so busy. They asked if we minded going to Winchester ( New Arlesford ) as they were concerned about the wait. We arrived at Winchester and were seen straight away. They were extremely caring and understanding ,and made Daisy much more comfortable. So we could take home to get better.

Money grabbers, don't think of the welfare of the animal and just think about how much they can get out of you. No empathy towards pet or owner... when you call when you have an emergency, it goes to a call centre, when they call you back after explaining that you have made the decision to not put your pet through any more procedures they ask you to bring them in so they can assess and discuss which is then another £350 at least, that's just the vet consultation. Vet covering from different area was lovely though.
