Setup Ok, beware Optus/Vodaphone network

Updated 30/12/25, its worse than Optus...its Vodafail!

The setup of the watch is fine enough. But hanging the service off Optus/Vodaphone is a massive mistake. The very reason we got this watch and plan was to enable our son to call us in an emergency. The fact he can’t do that because Optus/Vodaphone coverage even in a suburban area of Adelaide is complete $HIT makes the watch and this plan useless. Currently looking for plans that hang off the Telstra network, at least they cover metropolitan Adelaide properly!!!! BTW this was a promoted review by BetterRoaming.

I bought my daughter a cellular Apple…

I bought my daughter a cellular Apple Watch for Christmas and connected a plan through Better Roaming. The plan did not connect to my iPhone which was disappointing for Christmas Day as my daughter couldn’t use it to communicate with anyone. I sent multiple messages through the support link but got an AI bot. Remarkably someone called me personally and ultimately the plan was completely cancelled and then re-issued and it connected. So far so good. It was thanks to someone called Austral who called me and patiently assisted me. It was not a straightforward interaction but it worked out in the end.

Worst mobile provider in Australia

Worst mobile provider in Australia.
This is the only untethered option using Apple’s family plan option for managing a child’s Apple Watch via a parent’s iPhone. Apple should be ashamed of their partnership with BetterRoaming. Phone calls simply don’t work, instead going g to voicemail. And texts are always delayed, sometimes by hours. It’s simply the worst.

Ca ne fonctionne pas parfaitement

Ca ne fonctionne pas parfaitement. La montre de ma fille est souvent hors ligne alors qu'elle setrouve dans une zone de couverture habituelle. A la maison, parfois ça fonctionne et parfois non. Il est rare de compter dessus à 100 % pour pouvoir la joindre lorsqu'elle sort de l'école. Dommage, nous avions acheté sa montre pour ça. Assez déçu.

Apple watch for Kids

If you're setting an Apple watch up for the kids, that don't have an iPhone, then this service is priceless. Fantastic value, easy enough to set up and the kids have unlimited text and talk.

Unreliable service defeats the purpose of a safety device

I subscribed to Better Roaming for my teenager’s Apple Watch specifically for safety and emergency contact. Unfortunately, the network reception is appalling. Despite living in a major metro area, the watch fails to make or receive calls and texts roughly 40–50% of the time. For a service intended to provide peace of mind, this level of unreliability is unacceptable. An unreliable network is just as bad as having no contact at all.

BetterRoaming for kids Apple Watch

I used BetterRoaming to setup an eSIM for my son's Apple Watch. He won't have a phone and as he's a child he's part of the family sharing setup through Apple. There was no high street mobile company (Vodafone, EE, etc) that could help with this. I'm not exagerating when I say that I spent more than 24 hours over 2 weeks trying to figure out how this could be setup with one of these providers and they had no clue. I then went on the Better Roaming as my last-ditch effort to make this work for my son for Christmas. The setup with Better Roaming took no more than 10 minutes and is the cheapest plan I've seen across all companies. They've found a gap in the marketplace here and I'm so pleased they are servicing it!
