Portman House, Pylle, Family Gathering…
Portman House gave our family one of the most memorable five‑night breaks we’ve ever had. Nine of us and two dogs settled in instantly — the house wraps around you with comfort and grandeur. The views over the Pylle countryside are breathtaking, the lounge and bedrooms are pure luxury, and the cellar bar and hot tub made every evening feel special.
We hosted a regimental‑style dinner with a fine‑dining chef and a Highland piper, and the house rose to the occasion magnificently. Perfect weather meant we spent hours outside soaking in the surroundings. We even wandered to the local church and discovered the resting places of the Portman family, which added a lovely historical thread to the stay.
Leaving was genuinely difficult — five nights didn’t feel long enough.
The only disappointment was the kitchen. It needs a deep clean: juvenile flies, food debris under the cooker, and remnants from previous guests. We cleaned far more than expected, especially before the caterers arrived (who even remarked they’d never seen it that clean before). It didn’t spoil our stay, but Portman House deserves a kitchen as immaculate as the rest of the property.
Everything else was exceptional, and we would absolutely return.

We stayed for 7 nights at the Apple…
We stayed for 7 nights at the Apple Cabin as family group of 9 adults. The accommodation was just what we wanted with 5 large bedrooms each of which was en-suite. The property is well stocked with cups, plates, cutlery, cookware, etc. The pool was great and well heated as was the jacuzzi. It is a great location to explore both the north and south coastlines of the So reset/ Devon border. The big house experience company was very responsive as was the owner. Thank you for a great stay!

Rackenford Estate
We booked a long weekend at the beautiful Rackenford Estate having found it through the Big house Experience company. Communication was friendly and prompt - no question was a problem and we would definitely use the company again - their selection of houses are extremely well described along with numerous photos of every room and, once booked, the FAQ sheet was comprehensive and very useful.

Fantastic experience from start to…
Fantastic experience from start to finish. Wish I had come across this company for other large bookings in the past. Our stay at 100acres was perfect and all of our family had a fantastic stay. The house had everything ice bath, indoor pool, tennis court, cinema room, pool table and a sauna. We never had to leave!

Sea Star
Beautiful house and location, right by the beach. Very clean, plenty of towels. The boat house with paddle boards a bonus with life jackets as well. Plenty of entertaining space with 3 separate tables seating 16 each.
Pizza ovens BBQ and an amazing trampoline for the children. Loads of outside seating and comfortable sunbeds. We had an amazing week. Thank you x

Great Oak Farm is a beautiful stylish
Great Oak Farm is a beautiful stylish comfortable place to spend time. We stayed for three nights and we were there for a very special occasion. The group included all age-groups and it fitted the bill perfectly. The thought that went into each individual part of the various buildings was impressive. No two bedrooms were alike, each one had their own style. The living areas were spacious, comfortable and again very stylish. The view from the large lounge through the impressive hallway to the dining and kitchen area was stunning. The lighting was impressive too and made the various parts of the building stand out as a feature. The tall ceilings and windows gave lots of light and a huge impression of space.
The kitchen was amazing with great facilities, plenty of space for the 20 of us that were staying, and every detail was thought of. The dining-room the same.
The icing on the cake was the spa-room with pool which was amazing, a definite feature, also the gym was popular with the young people. The surrounding grounds were very pretty particularly the courtyard, and we had room to play games over the weekend.
The housekeeper was helpful and all was perfect in readiness for us.
All in all the house was well appointed, roomy and very comfortable for 20 people, and we truly recommend Great Oak House for a holiday or special occasion. One of the family when they walked in to the house for the first time said - this is like a film!

Totally exceeded our expectations!!
We needed an attractive country house to cope with 19 people aged from 3 to 80 and keep them entertained for a week!! Mendip Manor exceeded our expectations! The “Wow” factor “kicks in” as soon as you enter the house and go from one beautifully decorated room to another. As each of our family groups arrived, it was a delight to show them round and see their reaction! Outside, the swimming pool complex was an absolute winner with all ages. Believe me,every sport is covered from tennis to croquet with a snooker tournament to finish the evening. We took advantage of caterers to provide a full menu on the special birthday evening. The food was exactly as ordered and absolutely delicious. All held in the dining room - an unforgettable occasion. If we had any questions or queries during the week, Victoria, the housekeeper, who lived nearby, was able to sort us out.

Brilliant experience in a wow of a house
Beckstone is in great location, it feels like a country estate but you are only 15-30 minutes walk from all the facilities you could need and the lake.
The house itself is stunning with lots of different rooms and spaces so you can socialise together or apart as suits. It is very well equipped for living and playing (including incredibly comfortable beds). Furniture and equipment is good quality and it is well maintained and very clean.
All the communications with the BHE and housekeeping teams were prompt and clear.
All in all a great experience….my only advice is to make sure you get the best out of this fabulous house and don’t just use it as a place to sleep.

Great house in great location for a memorable family get together. 4 generations, making full use of the excellent swimming pool, jacuzzi, pool table, gym, spacious rooms and extensive grounds to relax and play. Loved the artwork and general ambience, some or all of us will be back. We ate at the Bell Pensax (28 of us), had pizza from The Lion Clifton u Teme, and DIY Hog Roast and Buffet (food delivered)...all recommended for informal get together.

Tall Trees ( Shelsley Grange)
We had a lovely time at Tall Trees ( Shelsley Grange) for our 30th wedding anniversary.
The house is beautiful, with plenty of space, comfy beds and lovely grounds. Everything you could possibly need for a gathering, plenty of kitchen accessories to use and a heated inside pool and hot tub, with plenty of pool toys/floats and towels avaliable.
Its a very peaceful area with a large patio at the rear with plenty of furniture, a small football pitch on the grounds and lots of fruit trees. The ground itself was very tidy and maintained.
If you are taking dogs, be aware that its not enclosed but we walked our dogs with leads on, as per the house rules.
The extra cottage onside was beautiful with everything you needed to enjoy your stay too, it did have a extra hot tub, plunge pools and a sauna, which was avaliable at a extra cost if you liase with the house manager, seperate to Big House Experiance.
Booking with Big house Experiance was incredibly easy and communication was great. Tall Trees does have a house manager and PA who also got in touch to make sure our stay was even more smoother.
There is a spa onsite, for a extra cost if you wanted to treat yourself.
There was 30 of us, all different ages from toddlers to Grandparents that catered to all.
This is my second time booking with Big House Experiance and both times have been an experiance which have exceeded our expectations.
We used Ocardo for a shopping delivery which was super easy and they had no problems finding the house.

We arrived at this house and we were amazed at the design, the amenities, everything about this house is tip top. I cannot recommend it enough, We did not want to leave, we went for lunch at the kitchen cafe which was walking distance , I would recommend by maybe book we only just got in.
The house has all you need not to have to go out. All seemed brand new, coffee and tea , etc etc in abundance. You need to go , dont dither its fantastic.

Our family special get together at Aldwick Hundred was wonderful. We were 18, including 7 children. The facilities of an indoor heated swimming pool with steam room, sauna and gym were so popular, as was the lovely outside garden, jacuzzies and direct access to the beach and sea. The facilities inside the house, including a cinema/games room were excellent. The bedrooms, mostly air conditioned, had very flexible layouts. Maddie was so helpful before and during our stay. Nothing was too much trouble for her and she could not have made us more welcome. We will be booking this house again soon.

Hethersdale was truly magical for the whole family
We had a wonderful week in August at Hethersdale in the Western Lakes. Everything about the property was truly magical. Every bedroom was en-suite and beautiful. The children loved the huge cinema room and games room. Everyone loved the hot tubs, wild water swimming, steam train and fell walks. All 16 of us had a fabulous family time in a comfortable and idyllic setting. Admin was handled efficiently and everyone at The Big House Experience was very helpful and accessible.

Mynach House for DIY wedding
We booked Mynach house for our DIY wedding weekend and it was the perfect fit. Mike the property manager was helpful and easy to contact with any questions. We hired the whole area including the farmhouse which gave us plenty of rooms to fit all our guests and space for people to spread out and enjoy themselves.
The main hall area would serve as a great option for a ceremony and transition well into a dining space and dancefloor. Although as we were lucky with weather, we were able to have our ceremony outside on the playing field which was even better as we could enjoy the mountain views.
There are two large kitchens which work well for caterers if you plan to get any in (we used Winnies Catering and they were excellent) and if you plan to cook your own food then the three kitchens available provide plenty of hob/oven space.
Finally, the games room went down very well with guests as did the two hot tubs which are roomy enough to fit in 8-10 people at a time meaning no one is left out. The playing field area is also a great space for outdoor garden games or sports, if like us you are lucky with weather.
Overall, we were so happy that we chose Mynach house for our weekend and would thoroughly recommend it to others considering booking.
