Butter Insurance Reviews 

I took out travel insurance with Butter specifically to cover unexpected disruptions to our trip. When our flights were cancelled by the airline due to an "operational failure", Butter advised that this was not covered because it was within the airline's control.
Whether it was in the airline's control or not is irrelevant to me. It certainly wasn't in my control, and I was left out of pocket through no fault of my own. As a result, Butter refused to cover any of the costs I incurred.
Very disappointing experience and not the level of protection I expected from travel insurance. I'd recommend spending a little more elsewhere for a policy that provides more meaningful cover when things go wrong.

Easy to buy, good price, but lot of exclusions, there are other options in market which I missed out because of price and I knew it after I lost items which are excluded. As an example a drone is excluded from cover even when you were carrying in bag not flying.

We purchased for a recent trip to Bali we found the website so easy to navigate it was quick and easy, breeze to find and add in extras! Price was competitive aswell which was a bonus

Really disappointing experience with Butter, our compensation for a cancelled flight was less than what we payed for the insurance in the first place, and definitely not enough to make up for anything else. Save your money go elsewhere!

I purchased travel insurance through Butter expecting support when something went wrong. After my flight from Las Vegas to New Orleans was cancelled, I incurred approximately $650 in additional accommodation costs and lost the value of prepaid accommodation in New Orleans.

Despite providing all requested information and repeatedly contacting both the airline and insurer, only $100 was paid. The remainder was rejected because the airline described the cancellation as being caused by vague “operational challenges” rather than specifically stating severe weather.

I had no control over the cancellation or the terminology the airline chose to use. Instead of properly investigating the underlying cause, the insurer relied on those two vague words to deny the substantial part of my claim.

The process required numerous calls and emails, with me repeatedly being directed back to the airline for documentation. I also recommended Butter to a friend travelling with me, who has experienced similar difficulties with the same disruption.

Insurance is supposed to provide support when travel plans unexpectedly fall apart. Based on this experience, I would not use Butter again or recommend it to others

Their views let young kids run away spooked by monkeys and don't pay out a claim for stolen items.

Absolutely steer clear they'd rather your kids be kidnapped or the likes then discuss a claim

Butter is a reasonably priced and reliable travel insurance company. Making a claim has never been much of a hassle, and the outcome has always been satisfactory.

I would highly recommend!

Huge shout out to Michael R and the team for their awesome customer service (via email) and speedy handling of my claim. I came home early from a trip in the US, and they processed and paid out my claim in less than two weeks from my initial report. Michael also complimented me on how I put together my list of expenses for my claim and made me feel really valued for the effort I had gone to.

Only feedback would be to turn off the auto-reply message everytime we respond to an email in the claims process.

Simple and easy to get your travel insurance.

First off, the insurance policy we had for a family of three was the best on the market including how much excess was for some of the claims (most didn't have excess). Secondly, communication was top notch when we admitted our son to the hospital - very easy to keep in contact with as they have 24/7 support. Finally, they simplified the process by requesting the documents needed for them to properly process the claim/s. I have already started recommending to friends and family and will definitely go with them moving forward.

Just used it for Vietnam, it was quick annd easy and offered scooter insurance so I went with it. Best on price I found

It was easy and straight forward. I compared quotes and policies and it was the best bang for buck and the easiest website to deal with. I used the app as well so I always had my policy at hand if I needed it. 5 star for value and 5 star for making things easy :)

I had a very poor experience with Butter Insurance.

My Jetstar flight JQ8 from Singapore to Melbourne was cancelled on 28 February 2026 due to engineering requirements. Jetstar could not rebook me until 3 March 2026, so I had to buy replacement flights costing AUD 1,090.28 to get home in a reasonable time. Jetstar’s cancellation email clearly stated the cancellation was due to engineering requirements.

I made a claim under my Butter travel insurance policy, expecting support for a major airline disruption outside my control. Instead, the claim was declined. Butter’s position was that engineering cancellation is not one of the listed cancellation events, and that the Travel Delay section only covers accommodation, meals, transport to and from temporary accommodation, and luggage storage — not replacement flights. They maintained this position even after reassessment and Internal Dispute Resolution.

In my opinion, this policy leaves a major gap in cover for real-world airline disruptions. A flight can be completely cancelled by the airline, you can be stranded for days, and you can still be left with nothing for replacement airfare. That is not what most ordinary travellers would expect when buying travel insurance.

The customer service was polite, but the outcome was extremely disappointing. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Butter Insurance if you want meaningful protection for airline disruption.
