The PMP exam seemed very wishy washy…
The PMP exam seemed very wishy washy and the questions and answer selections could be worded better, and in a way that minimizes confusion. I don't feel like the exam prep was very applicable to the actual exam. As for the alloted time on the test, it did not leave me much time to allow me to give feedback to PMI during the test. If there was a way to mark each question for feedback during the test, and then after the test it allowed you to go back and provide feedback without taking up the exam time it would be better and you would receive better feedback on the actual questions.

Approved on Paper, Inaccessible in Practice
My experience with PMI's testing accommodation process revealed significant gaps between accommodation approval and its actual delivery through Pearson VUE.
I have a permanent visual disability and requested additional time, Zoomtext, additional breaks, and a handheld magnifier. PMI initially approved the extra time, no Zoomtext and additional breaks. I was told additional medical reports would be required, which would have meant another medical appointment and $175 in cost. However, after my first testing attempt failed, PMI later approved Zoomtext using the same medical documentation already on filed.
This inconsistency raised concerns about how PMI assesses and applies accommodation requirements.
A major problem was the information I received about the online exam. I booked it after being told that a standard zoom would be available while being able to use a handheld magnifier. During Pearson Vue's online check-in, the expected zoom was not available. I explained that I am legally blind and asked the proctor for assistance, but was unable to help. The interaction suggests that there was no clear process or guidance for responding to my accessibility needs in the online testing environment. As such, I ended up using my handheld magnifier to see different parts of the screen; I received warnings from the proctor, and my exam session was eventually revoked before I entered the actual exam.
What followed was a lengthy process of contacting PMI & Pearson Vue to understand what had happened and arrange another exam. I communicated with approximately 10 representatives through chat and repeatedly had to explain the situation. Different representatives appeared to have varying levels of understanding of the accommodation process and the information that applied to my situation. Some representatives told me I had to pay a cancellation fee before I could have my accommodations reassessed, when the onus of the issue falls on PMI.
Information between PMI & Pearson Vue did not always appear to align, and there was no consistent point of contact responsible for helping me navigate the issue.
There were also delays in scheduling my accommodated test center exam through Pearson Vue. These delays contributed to me missing the opportunity to test before the July 8th curriculum change, which meant learning new material, additional study time, additional cost, and delay in completing my certification.
Before the rescheduled exam, I contacted the testing centre several times to ensure my accommodations would actually be available. I spoke with five staff members just to confirm use of my handheld magnifier. There was also uncertainty about my breaks and no clear procedure or staff guidance for adjusting ZoomText.
At the testing centre, the check-in material was not accessible, the monitor was too far away and could not be moved closer, and staff could not assist with ZoomText adjustments and color changes. I completed the nine-hour exam relying heavily on my handheld magnifier, with only two 10-minute scheduled breaks, resulting in significant eye, neck, and shoulder pain.
I appreciate that PMI reassessed my request and approved ZoomText, but fall short to think the logics to consider the physical and mental ability to take a double-time exam without doubling the break time. Unfortunately, my experience showed that an accommodation approved on paper does not necessarily provide equitable access if it cannot be effectively delivered in the testing environment.
PMI & Pearson VUE should manage accommodations as one coordinated process. Before an exam is scheduled, they should confirm that approved accommodations can actually be delivered. Candidates should receive consistent information, staff should have clear procedures and accessibility training, and complex cases should have one point of contact rather than requiring candidates to repeatedly explain & verify their needs.
For permanent disabilities, PMI should also reconsider when new medical documentation is necessary. Once a permanent disability and functional limitations are documented, candidates should have a meaningful role in identifying reasonable assistive tools that meet their needs. They are the experts in understanding their own needs. This would reduce unnecessary medical appointments, costs, and administrative burden while maintaining the integrity of the accommodation process.
As companies committed to the triple bottom line, I hope PMI & Pearson will revisit their missions to look at accommodations as one end-to-end journey, not simply as individual requests that are approved. Professionals with disabilities should demonstrate their skills, not navigate accessibility gaps.
