A Real Pain, why TranslatePress deserves 1 ...

I have been using TranslatePress since 2022, and I can tell you it’s a real pain. Let’s dive into why.

I am currently rating it 1* because their support literally broke my site today. I am waiting for the resolution of my ticket and, more importantly, a concrete action plan from the TranslatePress team to possibly change my opinion on this plugin.

To illustrate the situation, here is the message I sent to support:

Hello,
if I deactivate the extension it works fine.
I have lots of questions (please read them all):
- What is the full purpose of the SEO pack addons?
- What will it do if I deactivate it?
- Is it advisable to deactivate it on my site (10 languages and 7500 articles/pages)?

In the meantime, how long will it take you to fix this bug?

Deactivating an extension fixed a 404 bug, but I wanted to know if it was dangerous to leave it deactivated. The support agent replied that it would just display the default slug. She then proceeded to disable the plugin herself and told me I would need to verify everything (but she didn’t reactivate the plugin). As a result, my site had around 35,000 404 errors for 16 hours, with the majority of errors coming from Google.

All of the old URLs were broken, including those from backlinks. For context, Google = old URLs, backlinks = old URLs. The only thing that was working was the internal site! Worse yet, duplicate content got indexed on Google, which is a disaster for my site’s SEO.

This is an incredibly serious error that I can’t overlook, and it fully warrants the 1* rating.

Now, let's talk about why TranslatePress is a "pain":
The plugin does not link the original article with its translations. So, if you delete an article and have 10 translated languages, it creates 10 pages with 404 errors. Even if you do a 301 redirect for the original language, you still get 10 pages with 404 errors.
The plugin completely ignores this issue.

If you change a slug and set up 301 redirects, the translations are not taken into account. This means that over time, the plugin completely hinders the progression of your site. You can’t adjust your slugs without generating 404 or 301 errors.

On top of that, some translations can randomly modify the slug, adding a "-2" to the end of the URL, which worsens the situation.

I am now faced with a dilemma:

- If I remove TranslatePress, I lose tens of thousands of euros worth of translations and all of my pages, which would likely result in the shutdown of my site and the unemployment of my team.
- If I keep TranslatePress, my site will continue to get infected with issues over time.

The only possible solution:
TranslatePress needs to seriously dive into my site and propose a viable, concrete solution. As of now, they broke all of my URLs for 16 hours.

But for now, I’m sticking to this 1* rating, hoping TranslatePress realizes the extent of the damage and offers a real solution.

I’ll be watching to see how support responds to this huge mistake. Depending on their actions, my rating might go up to 2*, and if the issue is fully resolved, maybe even to 3*.

I sincerely hope I can one day give them a 5*, but that will only happen if my site finally becomes completely healthy!

Updates from 22/08 :
Support has just set my entire site to error 500 (504)...
They've tried something again and tell me: do it now (update the database) while I was sleeping...

I wake up and the whole site goes to error 500.

That's 2 times that support has broken my site and hasn't checked the rest or passed on the problem to me.

In the 2nd email, their reply tells me that they're tired because there are too many tickets and that they have limited time to deal with them, and they agree to refund me.
So all in all: we refund you and leave you in the lurch, but at least we don't have to deal with your problem any more... Really shameful

September news: I was kindly offered a free subscription 3 years ago.

Updates from 12/10 :
We've updated the latest version.

There are far fewer 404s than before, but there are still some major problems:
- we had to do +1000 redirects by hand (18h of work in total for 2 people)
- modify incorrect slugs
- 1 hour of site in error 500

Now we have 4 major problems:
- the biggest = all authors are in 404 in all languages...
- if you have emojis in url slugs, you get 404s (for older urls)
- 404 on some tags
- 404 on a news page for all our video games

If we manage to correct these errors, it'll be a good step forward.

On the other hand, one concern for the rest of the plugin is that I have the impression that url translation isn't done, so we'll have to see.

I'll keep you posted on future updates.

update 17/10 :
Now no more 404s on the site. We were able to correct this by deleting data with the WP Data Access plugin.
On the other hand, we had to manually create +10000 301 redirects this week to get everything working.

The idea of ​​reimbursement was not proposed to stop the investigation and solve the situation for us, but to help you, as a customer. We'd like to assure you that our primary goal is to assist you and help resolve your issues. When we suggested a refund, it was intended as a gesture towards finding the right solution "for you" in case our product didn't fit your needs at this time, not as a means to disengage from the problem.
As my colleague mentioned, our product is sometimes more suitable for some configurations than others, and that's not a bad thing. Like every plugin, it tackles specific problems and may not be the best fit for every scenario. However, it is by no means indicative of its quality or efficiency.

Regarding the mention of the load of tickets, don't take it as an excuse, because that was not our intention. We only wanted to make it clear that there are times when responses may take longer due to several uncontrollable factors like the number of tickets at that moment, as well as the availability of all members of the support team. But be assured, we consistently aim to provide prompt responses, typically within 24 hours. Of course, this time does not apply to the days when we are not at the office.

Regarding your concerns about the technical issues, our plugin essentially adds an automatic 301 redirect feature. This means when a URL has been altered or wrongly entered, the plugin automatically redirects to the correct translated URL. Manually imposed redirects by other plugins may not necessarily integrate with ours, hence, they need to be managed directly within their respective interfaces.

And about the last exposed situation, another colleague tried to make things clearer. We had a major upgrade in the functions of our plugin that deals with various slug translation situations and encountered some technical difficulties after the release. From there the problems arose. Our support team tried to fix the problems as quickly as possible, releasing a new version just yesterday, a day away from the one with problems. However, other fixes are about to be released in a new version. Also, my colleague requested access to a staging with your site where we can analyze in more detail the problems you encountered and where we can test, without affecting the live site, several possible solutions.

Above all, we firmly believe in transparency and we never intended to leave you feeling unsupported. If this is your honest opinion about the plugin and our services, we accept it, are deeply sorry if we failed to meet your expectations, but we will try to learn from here as well, as we try to do from every ticket, to provide an even better experience in the future.

Don't trust, nightmare that destroyed my website

I see them responding here to reviews and been waiting for customer service for days. I had the translation with Google, in some point out of nowhere they stop working. I change to their "TranslatePress AI". They ask me to renew to have the automatic translation added if you are a current user you don't get it (great), bought a new membership with 200K credits. Then my credits disappear, translation disappears, customer service says I have use all the credits - can't justify how - and nobody responds since then. Went ahead and bought extra 500K credits because I have an important presentation to show the website and thought that would fix it, and the website still NOT translating automatically. To my surprise, just navigating trying to figure out what's wrong and 60K credits disappear from my account and still no translations - only a few thing or some pages-. I have an important meeting tomorrow and thanks to this plugin my website is BUTCHERED, do not trust at all costs. Worst customer service experience I had in 14 years managing Wordpress sites. My first negative review ever, that's how upset I am with this people, this feels like a huge scam and those good reviews for customer service pretty sure are fake. Be aware

Great plugin

I've been using translate press for almost two years now and I'm very happy with it. You can do one additional language with the free version and multiple languages with the paid version. It's intuitive and easy to use; you can translate directly on the user-facing page so it's easy to see if you're missing any parts. I've had very few problems, but any time I had a question Anca and the other members of the support team were quick to reply with a solution. Would recommend hands-down.

The translated content of this plugin will occupy a large amount of database, causing the CPU to exceed the server limit. I can't solve this problem now.

Excellent traductor plugin

Excellent firm, translatepress software is by far the best traductor for wordpress I used, easy, well organised, we could developp some elements to use it on woocommerce and traduce emails and every elements for users.
Support is excellent too and I give them a special thanks for their help.
