I can Highly recommend this company. I used the packaging which they sent to me which was for next day guaranteed delivery. An offer was sent to me within a couple of hours of being delivered which was more than I had expected. After accepting the offer the money was transferred into my bank within the hour. “Return non-gold items” does NOT include diamonds

I think customers need to be aware of the wording Hatton Garden Metals uses when selling jewellery containing diamonds or precious stones.

I selected “RETURN NON GOLD/SILVER ITEMS: Yes, return non gold items.” I understood this to mean that anything that wasn't gold or silver would be returned, including diamonds.

The diamonds were from my mother's ring and I intended to keep and reuse them, so they had considerable sentimental value. I had also previously had stones returned by the company, which reinforced my understanding.

To be fair, the confirmation email I received before posting my jewellery did contain a warning explaining that stones are not returned and may be crushed, hammered out or melted. However, I believe the wording when making the original selection is unnecessarily ambiguous.

What has made this experience particularly upsetting is the way my concerns were handled afterwards. When I called and subsequently raised the matter formally by email, I explained the sentimental importance of my mother's diamonds. I came away feeling there was very little empathy or concern about what had happened, with the focus simply being on pointing me back to their terms.

Hatton Garden Metals has told me that stones aren't individually recorded or tracked, so they cannot tell me what specifically happened to my mother's diamonds.

Surely the option could simply say:

“RETURN NON-GOLD/SILVER ITEMS – EXCLUDING DIAMONDS AND OTHER STONES.”

That would remove any ambiguity.

I'm not claiming there was no warning elsewhere. My complaint is that something this important should be absolutely clear at the point the customer makes their selection.

If you're sending jewellery containing stones you want to keep, have them removed first. I just wish this had been clearer when I made my choice and that my concerns afterwards had been handled with more understanding.

Very good price received for my gold items- more than expected. Would advise sending items early in the week using the Royal Mail Special Delivery envelope they provide promptly on request. Post this late in the week and confusion may arise, as in my case, when you get one of their Automated No Reply promotional "nudge" emails telling you "we haven't yet received your items" in the late afternoon of the day when they should have arrived before 1pm.
