Ive had private medical insurance for over 30 years, & now retired i looked for a more cost effective provider.
HMCA seemed to fit the bill & accepted all previous medical conditions while previously covered privately.
This year however they declined to pay out on a condition, claiming i was in receipt of treatment the previous year & therefore excluded. This is despite their failing to include this exclusion on my renewal medical care plan certificate. Furthermore they were confusing the issue by stating conflicting T&C's
In addition, they do not follow their own complaints procedure, i.e no written full & final reply to my complaint & a full & final response from their second line of complaint office in Gibraltar.
Now referred to Financial Services Ombudsman office

My mother was diagnosed with leukaemia and admitted to Cirencester Hospital for treatment, blood transfusions, etc. She died there 3 weeks later. But HCMA justified avoiding any payment on her policies because Cirencester Hospital doesn't meet their narrow definition of a "hospital". Very disappointing but not at all surprising.

Channel Islander here. Therefore Brit but never UK.
Recently was informed that HMCA can no longer cover islanders. Fair do, seems honest.
BUT then the hoops to jump through started appearing.
a) I was not given enough notice to get alternative cover even though I started the process immediately. So CURRENTLY NOT COVERED while waiting for new insurer.
b) misinformed and / or carelessly misled this November, in 2 respects, by HMCA about cancelling the annual Direct Debit. In fact after research in person at Lloyds Bank, I have clear written info that HMCA cancelled it back in January. Leaves me believing they could have told us MONTHS ago, instead of leaving me up the creek with half a paddle.
c) A friend was initially told she would be fine to continue due to her having also a UK address. Then an about turn. HMCA lawyers/decision makers seem not to be competent.
My complaint is HOW we Channel Islanders are being treated.

Your form is impossible to complete due to having to dab on a calendar to submit your date of birth ! Being born in 1952 and having to go back from the present , month by month means you have to dab approx 73 ( years ) x 12 ( months ) = 876 dabs !?? BUT it gets even worse because the furthest I managed to get back was to around 1980 and then the form decides to revert back to present day !!! I tried 4 times only for this seriously annoying form to revert back to present day every time ! It's a wonder I haven't got a blister on my finger ! I really DO NOT recommend this company based on my recent personal experience. I should add the disclaimer that my poor experience may well be connected to the level of cover that my father has but my 92 year old father is an intelligent person who has been completely bewildered by the low level of cover offered and I believe that the marketing for this policy is misleading.
Essentially, a week ago my father discovered, out of the blue, that he urgently required heart surgery - a procedure called a TAVI. This was on Friday morning. He told the consulatant cardiologist that he has medical insurance so he was booked in for surgery on the following Wednesday and put in his claim with HMCA. The surgery was unable to occur because HMCA were nowhere near making a firm confirmation of cover, despite the fact that I informed them that my father's life was in danger. Eventually, after pressure from me and numerous phone calls from the consultants PA, confirmation of cover was made on the following Friday. It was £16.075 maximum on a surgery that was estimated at £64,000. In addition, the consultant's PA warned me that should there by ANY further costs due to complications or extended stay in hospital, the insurance would not cover any of that.
My father is thankfully now having the procedure done, tomorrow, on the NHS.
This insurance accomplished nothing other than delaying my father having the surgery he urgently needed for a week and causing enormous stress for him and extra work for myself and the consultants PA in trying to move the claim along. It also cost him £2,600 for the private scan he required when it was believed that he'd be having the surgery done privately and the utterly pointless £2,000 he'd paid again recently for his annual payment to HMCA.
The claims handlers that I & the PA spoke to were pleasant enough but made no effort to expedite anything without being pushed. The man I spoke to said - after I'd explained that my father's heart condition was 'beyond severe' - things like 'the claim is at the underwriters, hopefully they'll come back to us soon'. I had to tell him that that 'hopefully' wasn't acceptable until he volunteered to phone the underwriters. The whole conversation was like that.
I cannot for the life of me see any benefit to a policy that offers such a low level of cover and I feel that my father has been misled and taken advantage of. I don't know how many years he's been paying for this insurance but he may as well have burned that money for all the use it's been. He's never made a claim before.

Following my review of last August (2024) when I had joined them. This month (June 2025) I unfortunately had to claim. I paid for the treatment upfront and submitted the claim and receipts yesterday. Today I received confirmation that they have paid me the total directly into my bank. I am flabbergasted. What a brilliant service. I have in the past been with BUPA - absolutely terrible, then with Axa - outrageously expensive and very bureaucratic. HMCA are in a league of their own. If they are prepared to take you on – don’t hesitate.

Until recently I had been an HMCA member for a couple of years at around £1300/yr.
28 years ago after 45 years of excellent health since birth I became ill with Lupus which is an immune system disorder. I recovered from that and continued to work as an airline Captain always passing the stringent biannual medicals at initial checkup.
Last year I became ill with what proved to be kidney failure and this necessitated nearly 4 weeks in hospital. This was later diagnosed as having been triggered by the immune system. HMCA refused to pay out anything due “previous disorder”. I had been expecting £2,600. 28 years of this not having occurred before counted for nothing in their eyes. I still question the logic. Consider this: you fall off your bike as a kid and maybe break a leg; nearly a full lifetime later you have a hospital stay for a hip replacement. The doctor considers that a factor is the damage of decades previous although it has given no trouble since. Would you think it right that no payout gets made? The body is a construction of interacting muscles and organs.The result of the HMCA logic I faced suggests that you can only feel securely covered by their insurance if you have had almost perfect health since birth. That rules out most people.

I consider myself to be a good judge of character. I can genuinely say that Elaine employed at HMCA is the most patient person that I have ever met, being most informative and professional. Elaine was instrumental in offering excellent advice and guidance within a totally alien environment to both my family and myself. Elaine went above and beyond, making the whole process incredibly easy, without any pressure at all. I'd throughly recommend HMCA to anyone looking to take out Health insurance as all of the fine detail is explained to the customer. Thank you Elaine for being so patient, providing great customer service and being an incredible asset to HMCA.
The process of joining was simple and easy and the people very friendly and helpful.
Fortunately, I haven't had cause to use their services yet but I am hopeful the same will apply if I have the need.
