I’d like to state first that I am not a private patient with Psicon, or RTC, I was placed with them automatically by the NHS when the assessment pathway I was registered with shut down a year ago. That may have affected the service provided to me.

All the support staff I have interacted with across the queries and bookings teams at Psicon are incredibly kind and friendly, however where things fall apart is a lack of timely, concise communication. There is a pattern of having to chase for updates at every turn, and zero consistency, both in the people you speak to, or the information you are told. Psicon’s management seem to have set their staff up for failure as each team does not seem to be aware of their own team's or others' processes or policies, and they appear to be overwhelmingly understaffed.

My assessment was the worst experience I’ve had with a mental health professional. My assessor was 20 minutes late to the appointment, frequently checked notifications on their phone and watch whilst I was speaking, and left the room twice to take phone calls during the session. When speaking themselves, it seemed like they were reading from a script. If I asked for clarification on questions asked, they chose to read the question again rather than helping me to understand what information they were looking for. The latter half of the assessment seemed to be a speed run of yes or no questions without any opportunity for me to provide context, and I was interrupted if I attempted to do so. They also misquoted me multiple times later in the session.


I did not receive a result at the end of my assessment, and was given ‘inconclusive’. However, instead of breaking down the specific reasons why or giving me other areas to research that may be more relevant to my situation, I received a strongly delivered monologue about how recent ASD/ADHD diagnosis rates are the new prozac epidemic, and even a comment about how their colleagues “ask me all the time why I don’t just diagnose people, because wouldn’t it be easier?”. They then called directly to their level of seniority as the sole reason why I should trust them. I don’t believe any of this was appropriate to say in an assessment scenario and if any of the comments are in fact true, it does not present Psicon’s clinical team in the best light. Nor was this a constructive use of the time allocated for my assessment.

I have now been in limbo for four months waiting for a conclusion, and I’ve been given conflicting information by everyone I’ve spoken to regarding what type of appointment this will be, who it will be with, how it will be conducted, and when it will happen.
Initially I was told by the enquiries and clinical teams that I would not have to see the same clinician again given my experience, so I submitted the supplemental information requested to assist with the inconclusive decision, believing this to have been passed to the senior clinical team as this was what I was told. I have since had multiple calls from the bookings team attempting to book me in with the original clinician. I would not have submitted anything further had I been told this would be the case, as I am incredibly uncomfortable giving the original clinician any further insight into my life.

The only options provided to me as a solution by different people in the clinical team at a later date were to either speak to this clinician again for a conclusion, or to receive whatever notes are unfinished from my initial inconclusive assessment so I can raise a diagnostic dispute.
Unfortunately, the latter could result in my complaint being dismissed, and I would then be discharged from the service with an inconclusive result. Whilst I later managed to get the clinical team to allow me to opt out of a follow up call with the same assessor, and request my conclusion in writing instead, these choices forced my hand into allowing someone who has made me feel incredibly dismissed and uncomfortable to read through my supplemental evidence in order to complete the assessment process. The lack of formal processes for dealing with this scenario seems like a massive oversight in Psicon's approach to patient safeguarding.

Edit: I have now received my conclusion report, which lacks any depth and includes no recommendations for further support that wouldn't be easily found on page one of an online search.

I would not recommend choosing Psicon if you have the option to pick a different provider.

If you are already registered with Psicon, the name of my assessing clinician is not found across any of the positive reviews posted here on Trustpilot. If you cannot find a positive review of your named clinician on review sites, I would recommend declining and requesting an alternative person to give yourself the best chance of having a positive experience.

We were given clear timelines throughout the process which were accurate (or shorter than expected). We were also emailed periodically during this time, with support agencies signposted.

The assessment itself was conducted by staff who clearly know how to engage with children. My son seemed happy and calm throughout. Outcomes were clear at the end of the process.

Absolutely amazing service. My daughter received both diagnosis in under a year. The staff are always friendly and considerate. The doctors we met with were very understanding and kind. They made this whole experience easier.

Wow! This service is amazing! Their wait list for my son was only three months and helped every step of the way, keeping us informed all the way though. The waiting rooms were calm and lounge like with a fish tank and toys for my son which made the whole experience a positive one for him and us. Highly recommend!

Great experience very professional and understanding

From start to finish me and my son experienced fantastic care & communication thank you to the wonderful lady who diagnosed my son.

Extremely polite & professional people to work with.
We were kept informed throughout the process & beforehand but not inundated.
Additionally, they kept to all the deadlines they stated they would.
Any medical diagnosis for an individual can be an emotional & challenging experience, so we couldn't be more satisfied with the way the test itself was conducted & the feedback we received.
If only the NHS was this efficient!

We chose to go down the route of ADHD assessment for our son through the Right to Choose pathway and did research into companies offering this through the NHS. The CAHMS waiting time currently, to the best of my knowledge, is approximately 3 years. Psicon was able to offer an online assessment with an experienced, qualified professional within a few months. The process was very straight forward and we are happy with the service we’ve received. Although we’re still waiting for the official written diagnosis, I appreciate these things can take some time.

We used Psicon, as they were recommended by our GP to select for NHS Right To Choose service. The Right To Choose referral was easy as I sat with my GP as they filled in the form via Psicons website. We have used them for our children's assessments and, whilst there is months wait for appointments, we have gone from referral to assessments completed within 6 months for single assessments. I am confident the duel assessments will not take much longer. Every staff member we have encountered, either via phone call, face to face, or video calls, have been kind, polite, friendly but professional. Clear communication has been throughout and any clarifying questions have been answered simply and succinctly. We have used the offices in Basingstoke for the face to face appointments, which was a great building. Very comfortable waiting room for children and parents, I like that they offer various different types of seating, plus sensory toys and a white board for children waiting. There are signs everywhere offering weighted blankets and ear defenders. There are machines offering free hot drinks and water. The toilets are a bit small and cramped (but it is an old building) however they are clean, as is the waiting room. I did see an assessment room one time and I was impressed with the decor, the vibe was relaxed and pleasant. Overall I would definitely recommend Psicon and their services, just simply need to be aware if the assessment you are looking for, if Psicon requires a face to face appointment whether you can travel to their offices as they don't have some all over the country like other companies do.

We waited a very long time for an assessment for my daughter. The assessment was then online and it only lasted 20-30 minutes in which time it was apparent the practitioner had not read much about my daughter before the session. In the session he felt that there was not enough information from her school so said that he would write this in his report. I have now been provided with the report a month later which is not in anyway helpful going forward.

Rakel was brilliant today during my daughters assessment , it’s taken some time to get where we are today but finally I can learn the tools needed to support my daughter so I’m sincerely grateful to Rakel M you were fantastic with the explanation and a really caring assessment
