Wrest is definitely worth a visit
Wonderful visit to the house talking to well informed volunteers particularly the lady who showed us around the rooms finished with exquisite Chinese wallpaper from the C18. The gardens are extensive and beautifully laid out and provided a great wander on a warm day. Our visit was marred by having to share our dining space with a golden Labrador whose owner was treating it like a person without a thought for those around him who may not like or even be allergic to dogs as I am. Why are dogs even allowed in your cafe?!!

Deal Castle - a lot better than expected
We finally visited Deal Castle yesterday having drove past it several times.
We both really enjoyed the visit finding it alot more interesting than what we had expected.
The volunteer we spoke to was very informative.
We particularly enjoyed walking along The Rounds, the dark circular trail around the castle’s depths. Even at 70 I loved walking with a musket for protection. 🤣
I’d recommend a visit.

Fascinating historic building with a couple of negative points
Fascinating historic building, well worth visiting. However, the signage for parking and access is very poor which makes using the correct car park very confusing and difficult. Service in cafe is slow and while the food and coffee is generally of a good quality, the avocado and poached egg is very small, with barely a scraping of avocado so is very poor value. We did raise our concerns at the time on both points and apparently these are frequent comments. No doubt English Heritage will get this sorted eventually.

Excellent garden tour
I want to commend the guide for the Garden Tour - Jen, I think.
She spoke clearly, (not all guides do), and the tour was engaging.
She made it clear at the start that this was a historical tour, rather than being about the plants - which suited me.
After a brief history of the estate, much of the tour was about how the gardens had been when EH acquired it, and what they were gradually doing to restore them - some of it to to the minute!
I particularly liked that she was willing to include theories and conjecture, while making clear that that's what the were.
Since I'm giving feedback, I want to express how frustrated I was that I couldn't find any way to do so either on the app or on the EH website.

Great day out
The house is closed for a big project which we expected.
Grounds lovely and easily accessible apart from the glade area. Good facilities.
Was especially pleased to find a vegan ice cream tub for my granddaughter who has a dairy allergy. Excellent! Usually she is stuck with an ice lolly.

Date Problem easily solved by Gabriella from English Heritage
I had a problem with my Yarmouth Castle tickets on the Isle of Wight, having somehow booked the actual day I purchased the tickets, rather than the date I was attending. I sent off an email to English Heritage and Gabriella changed the date for me and emailed the new tickets. Excellent customer service from Gabriella.

Tour of Dover Castle
We enjoyed a guided tour of the castle keep at Dover by Fred. It was about the right length of time and the guide gave us plenty of time to climb the stairs without feeling too rushed. He gave us a potted history of various events in the castle spanning from Henry II to present day. We learnt some useful facts e.g. the meaning of the saying "Night, night. Sleep tight, don't let the bugs bite" and how colourful the castle would have been. Thank you for this experience. The medieval/Georgian tunnels have been updated with much better lighting and have been extended. There is more than enough to see at the castle and requires either an early start to see everything or further visits. Well worth a visit to this "Key to England" heritage site.

Great welcome from the staff
Great welcome from the staff. The Fort is well kept with excellent displays explaining its past and its role in protecting Dartmouth from intruders. It also played its part in the second world war. The freedom to move around its various buildings and levels made it interesting for the grandkids in particular. Good value for money. Great views of the River Dart
