Premium Paint, Budget Customer Service – 5 Faulty Cans and Weeks of Frustration

I bought 6 cans of Lick Supreme paint in White 01, and 5 out of the 6 cans were FAULTY. While painting, the paint repeatedly produced black marks, completely ruining the finish and causing a huge amount of stress, delay, and wasted time.

I contacted Lick customer service on Sunday with full details and photos of the issue. Unfortunately, the experience that followed was extremely frustrating. For around 3 days, they appeared to misunderstand the situation entirely, repeatedly referring to the issue as though only 1 can was faulty, despite me clearly explaining multiple times that 5 cans were affected. During that time, they kept saying they would send a replacement can, before later completely backing away from that and directing us to resolve the issue through the retailer instead.

This was especially concerning because I had already explained that I was worried about purchasing more stock from the same supplier in case the exact same issue happened again. Despite this, the only solution offered was a 25% goodwill discount code to place another order ourselves — and the code DIDN’T even work.

The delays also meant we had decorators on site who were unable to continue due to the lack of usable paint, which cost us both time and money.

What made this even more disappointing was the response suggesting the problem was likely related to “storage conditions, handling, or contamination” rather than a manufacturing or batch issue. After having 5 faulty cans out of 6, that explanation felt dismissive rather than helpful.

Overall, this was a really poor experience from a premium paint brand. The product quality was unacceptable, and the handling of the complaint lacked urgency, care, and proper understanding of the issue.

Throughout our correspondence, we responded within our 24-hour service level agreement, and we did our best to investigate the issue based on the information provided. As your original purchase was made through B&Q, they remain the appropriate first point of resolution for a refund or full replacement. This route is typically the quickest and most effective way to resolve issues involving multiple units from the same purchase.

As a B-Corp brand with sustainability at our core, we aim to minimise unnecessary waste and transportation. Handling returns and replacements through the original retailer helps ensure that any affected product is managed, assessed, and disposed of responsibly, rather than creating additional environmental impact through duplicate shipments.

We understand your hesitation about receiving stock from the same location, and we regret that we were unable to meet your expectation for a direct replacement in this case. As previously explained, any order placed directly with us would be considered a new transaction, and the discount offered was intended purely as a goodwill gesture in recognition of the inconvenience caused.

We’re truly sorry that this situation did not meet your expectations, both in terms of product experience and communication. Your feedback has been taken on board and shared internally, as we are always looking to improve both our products and customer experience.

Perfect cosy pink

I used Licks pink 13 and I love it! The colour is exactly what my bedroom needed to feel warm and homely. It went on smoothly and dried into a beautiful mature pink. Would definitely recommend 💗

Superior quality products.

Buying directly from Lick is easy and hassle free. Delivery is swift. As for the products? We have used both paint, the Ultra Matt, and wallpaper. The quality is superb! Easily the best paint brand we have used. Coverage is excellent and application is easy. The wallpaper is again a superior quality, yet at a good price point for a quality wallpaper. Easy to hang and gorgeous!

Speedy delivery of samples

The samples where delivered very quickly, I chose 4 different shades of pink before deciding on number 3 and purchased the paint and accessories from my local B&Q. The paint was a dream to work with as dried down quickly so I didn’t have to wait to apply the second coat. Absolutely beautiful quality and finish and will definitely be buying more from lick for the rest of my home x
