easy to order

I've made three orders from this company doing 9 windows covering 3 windows with no sill and 1 double window no sill in the first order, two cafe style treatments in the second order, and three windows with sills in the third order. These orders were each a couple years apart starting in 2020. Prior to my most recent order, I would have no hesitation recommending shutterstore to anyone however between my second and third orders, they have changed their manufacturer and the quality of the shutters and hardware on the shutters has dropped noticeably and significantly. Two specific examples are that the wood was a higher quality and the previous hinges were slightly adjustable. The plastic biscuit system they are using now for putting together the top rail to the frame verticals is flimsy at best. The biscuit is tight, as it should be, but the frame material is weak so it's easy to damage or full crack the channel if you aren't treating the rails like glass as you try to tap the biscuit in. None of that was a problem with the previous manufacturer. The most egregious problem is the non-adjustable hinge system they switched to. The previous hinges had three screws in each position. The top and bottom screws were in a little oblong channel that allowed you to slide the hinge inward or outward about 1/8-1/4 inch and the middle screw was a standard hole so it was kind of a "set screw" that you put in one the hinge was in your desired position. These hinges have been abandoned for hinges that just have three standard holes and no play. Because the frames are wobbly (two biscuits up top, two screws in each side at bottom), the odds of everything being perfectly true are pretty low. Sometimes you need that 1/8 play after the fact to get the tilt and spacing of the shutters "perfect". I needed it in one of the three I just put up and I don't have it now. It looks "fine", but it's 1/8 off at the top between one shutter and the other and if you look close, you notice it. Once the 6 frame screws go in, you don't have any recourse other than pulling the 4 along the sides out and re-drilling new holes to make an adjustment. That's ridiculous versus them saving whatever between the adjustable hinges and the hinges they have now. Based on this, I can't recommend using these shutters any longer as you just don't have the quality and adaptability necessary to get them "just right" after ordering them through the mail. The ordering process itself continued to be very good. I just wish the shutters still matched the quality of the ordering.

This is my second purchase from the shutter store. I installed this order on a very large tall window. I was all done in under an hour. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Customer service

Until my shutters arrive I cannot say for sure this experience was excellent, but the guidance I received on the phone from Jordan was great. Changes were made to my original order during this call which likely avoided a difficult instillation. Received my shutters much earlier that estimated. Very happy.

First the good...

1. The frames were simple to assemble (install was a different story)
2. The shutters look great overall and function reasonably well. The slats are a little stiff to open and close, but I’m assuming they may loosen up with use — hopefully not too much.

What Needs Improvement

Factory Quality

1. On one of the frames, a magnet catch had been drilled on the wrong side. It appears the assembler moved it and then patched the original hole rather sloppily. It looks like white filler or caulk was simply smeared into the hole. Why not cut a new frame? These are plastic/vinyl extrusions. It's not like the material is expensive. I don't get it.
2. Several of the magnet catches were cracked at the fastening points, likely from being overtightened.
3. Some of the slats had scratches, marring, or obvious manufacturing damage from the factory. Most of this damage is on the inside of the panels, so it is not highly visible, but it is still disappointing. I have photos so I'll write the same review on Google so go there to view.
4. The hinges on the wood core shutters are not adjustable, which is a major downside. Without adjustable hinges, it is extremely difficult to make the small alignment adjustments needed for the panels to open and close perfectly.
5. The mitered corners are not sealed, so daylight shines through the joints and they're pretty badly gapped on a few of the frames.
6. Some frames were labeled “Left” and “Top,” while others were not labeled at all, which meant I had to guess during assembly.
7. The screw colors were inconsistent. Some were white (which was correct) and others were stainless.
8. The screws were wrapped in an awkward wad of plastic with a green sticker around it for each frame. It would have been much better to include the hardware in a simple labeled bag.
9. One shutter face had pretty bad damage that I'm likely going to request a replacement for. I'll update my review if I don't get it resolved. See photo in my google review (submitting soon)

Shutter Store Experience

1. I found the installation instructions a little basic and did not provide guidance beyond the simplest installation scenario. They also did not cover the wood-core shutters, even though assembly differs depending on which shutter type is ordered.
2. Communication was poor. I had to contact The Shutter Store myself a several weeks after the order was processed to find out that my order status had changed to “shipped.” If I had not reached out, I’m not sure how long it would have taken to hear anything.
3. The freight company selected by The Shutter Store (or factory?), Maersk, was terrible. I did not realize a delivery appointment was required until several days after the estimated delivery date had already passed. To make matters worse, I was unable to schedule an appointment because of a bug on Maersk’s website. I called and left multiple voicemails, but nobody returned my calls. In the end, the shutters sat in their warehouse for over two weeks. I finally had to escalate the issue to a manager. It was a complete fiasco.

If you are considering buying from Shutter Store, I strongly recommend asking them which freight company they plan to use before you order. If it is Maersk, consider yourself warned. Shipping is a major part of this project for obvious reasons. If I buy more shutters from Shutter Store for the rest of my house, the freight company will be a major factor in my decision.

4. It was unclear why some shutters arrived already installed in their frames while others required assembly. This may have been done for shipping convenience, but it was confusing, and there were no instructions explaining the difference.
5. The Shutter Store website has a bug that prevented me from checking out originally. Apparently, if the cart is left open too long, the site can no longer process the order. I had to contact support to learn the workaround, which delayed my order by several days. Customers may leave the cart open for a while because they are carefully reviewing order details, measurements, and options before placing the order.

Overall the shutters look pretty good aside from the damaged areas. After spending $5500 on 11 windows I'm not sure I'd order these again. 50/50...

This is my third time ordering shutters from here. The shutters have always been great and service good. This last order was really upsetting because when I checked to see when they would be delivered I was told they were going to take a lot longer than I had originally been told. This caused a major problem because we were not going to be at that location that long. We have to return to St. Louis before they were going to be delivered due to upcoming medical procedures. I was chatting with Jordan the representative online and I explained to Jordan what a disaster this was and asked if the shutters could be held in their warehouse till we were able to get back to have delivered. The next day I received an email from
Jordan. Jordan looked very deeply into my order and found out exactly what crate the shutters were in and their location. Jordan found out the order did arrive in the US and I would be receiving them before we had to leave for St. Louis I had been so stressed about this situation and Jordan was able to relieve my stress and give
me very precise information. This person really went way beyond my expectations. I wish all representatives could be like Jordan.

We have bought shutters from you all before and they were awesome! I look forward to having these in our bedroom!

Needed to adjust measurements multiple times. They were professional and helpful with each call.

The website was easy to navigate and when I sent an email for customer service I received a phone call back extremely fast. The young lady that called me back was extremely helpful and took care of my issue immediately.

The assistance and expert advice provided by Jordan towards helping me configure the right shutters for my application, could not have been better. As such, I will purchase shutters for my remaining windows only from The Shutter Store.

I was dealing with Mr Castro through my ordering process. We had our share of problems, but Mr Castro was very patient with us and was very accommodating,We had problems with the whole process but through it all he could not be more helpful. We really don’t know why our measurements, pictures were so hard to understand but apparently they were because we just could not get the sizing that we wanted. The company was very understanding and tried their best to get the proper fit for our window to no avail, but we appreciate all their effort in trying to get us a correct fit.

Just a heads up to anyone considering placing an order. With the Shutter store. I ordered my samples weeks ago. I finally got them. I called to place an order. It took days to get through. When I finally spoke to someone, they said, they would call me back and never did. I’ve been calling for days trying to get a simple answer. They have a robot recording that passes you through to a phone that rings and rings and rings and nobody answers and then the robot comes back on and says hold on while we try to get an agent your call will be recorded over and over again. I finally got through to someone. Who clearly did not understand what I was asking. And did not speak while I was asking questions. I have a large order to place. That is sitting in my cart. I am one button away from placing the order and I cannot complete it because I can’t get anyone to help me. Good luck.
