Hughes Driver Training Reviews 

First pass today after 6 days of training with Nick in Northampton. He is an amazing instructor, doesn’t just teach you how to drive the truck but will give tips from past experience of his time on the road to ensure things are done safely. He is patient and overall a top bloke. The training never felt repetitive was always new routes to learn, Nick made things memorable like tight junctions etc so when going for test you could feel more confident if you got that area. If there was anything you was unsure of or wanted to go over again he was always happy to ensure you had another go to build your confidence up. You really are an asset to the company and the way you teach I don’t believe I could’ve got better from anybody else, thank you very much Nick. Ps, I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for the minions!

Next I’d like to mention Jake from HDT office in Leicester depot. This guy helped me massively along the way in my journey to hold a HGV license, from start to finish. He was always there at the start to answer any worries/queries when beginning the whole process. He made sure I was set up with everything I needed eg theory and cpc etc etc and also practicals. I did my training in Northampton as closer to home, so he was happy to get me sorted out with the team at Northampton. Jake is also a big asset to the company. Many thanks Jake and HDT!

I had mark teach me and pass first time . What a lovely kind hearted guy , wasn't just my instructor but he became my friend , someone to have a laugh with whilst taking the test seriously . Great guy but he owes me a spoons pint .

My instructor, Keith was excellent throughout my training to become a class one Driver . I passed my class one with flying colours due to the excellent instructions from my trainer.! The whole process is done in a relaxed manner not to cause the candidates any anxiety. I would highly recommend this company to do your class one with.. thank you to Keith who is an excellent instructor!

I recently completed my training with HGV Hughes Driver Training, and I was the happiest with the experience especially thanks to my instructor, Greg. From the very beginning, Greg was professional, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable. He took the time to explain everything clearly, making even the more challenging aspects of HGV driving feel manageable and straightforward.

What really stood out was his calm and supportive teaching style. He built my confidence step by step, always offering constructive feedback and practical tips that made a real difference in my progress. No question ever felt like a silly one, and he was always willing to go the extra mile to ensure I fully understood each part of the training.

Thanks to Greg’s guidance, I felt well-prepared and confident going into my test and I’m pleased to say I passed! I would highly recommend HGV Hughes Driver Training to anyone considering getting their HGV licence, and if you get the chance to train with Greg, you’ll be in excellent hands.

I’ve just completed a refresher course with the Hughes Driver Training crew in Plymouth, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. After many years away from the cab, I needed a serious sharpener, and my instructor, Steve, was exceptional. He didn't just instruct; he coached me, putting me through my paces and ensuring I remembered every vital detail. Steve’s competence and professionalism were evident as he answered every question I had—and even prepared me for the ones I hadn’t thought of. Thanks to his expertise and the support from Hughes, I feel completely confident and ready to get back to driving professionally. Thank you!

I recently passed my CAT C test out of Plymouth. My instructor Steve was excellent throughout. A great instructor full of knowledge and skill and great man manager knowing how to get the best out of his students. Overall, a great learning experience and Couldn’t recommend enough.

Professional and compassionate he made her feel at ease to make the whole experience much easier for someone that isn’t overly confident.

My experience with Hughes was absolutely perfection from start to finish. I could not have asked for a better training provider! Lee, my instructor was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond my expectations. I was lucky with this training!

I chose hughes driving training as my go to to learn how to pass my drivers. It was the best choice iv made. Friendly staff and the best driving instructors. With hedis training and patiences I was able to pass my hgv class 2 license

I won't mention names but I flew through all the theory 95/100 CPC 45/50 Hazards 85/100, also passed the off-road maneuvers and CPC first time with no actual training from them, you just turn up in a car park on the first day and its sink-or-swim.

When it came to the driving lessons, after the first two sessions my instructor went on the sick and I was put in with another bloke who then had 2 learners in the cab. I was supposed to get 40 hours behind the wheel but only got 15 hours before they rushed me into the test. I failed it due to the extra stress and pressure of knowing I wasn't prepared.

The worst thing is after waiting for over a year about the retest they had been paid for by the government they never actually got me one, just took the money and ran I suppose.

You can say it didn't cost me anything so you get what you pay for.. but I worked really hard for 4 months for nothing and lost the chance of a new career. I know for a fact that the instructors blag their learners to leave 5 star reviews on here because there are company incentives in it for them, fair enough but people should also know the other side.

The office staff were dismissive towards me, and the instructors spent most of the time during my sessions slagging the company off and telling me home truths about how awful driving HGVs is for a living!

I suppose I will try and get qualified for at least Class 2 off my own back, but needless to say I won't be doing it with Hughes!

Anyone thinking of parting with hard earned money there are plenty of options out there so have a look at some of the other 1 Star reviews on here before you make a decision and not just the 5 Star review bombing from successful candidates. There are about 1.5k reviews on here but bear in mind, this is a Nationwide training company with hundreds of candidates on a weekly basis, so there will be plenty of people like me with bad experiences who don't bother to come and leave an honest review.

If you are a new learner I wish you all the best of luck with getting passed!
