These are an insurance broker and use multiple insurance companies. Just read the small print before you purchase. I cancelled my insurance after 6 months after selling my motorcycle and expected around 40% of the premium back but was surprised to only recieve £31 returned to me from a £800 policy. Total rip off. Would never use again.

Extremely disappointing and frustrating experience with Principal Insurance

I am extremely disappointed with the way Principal Insurance handled my policy and my request to cancel.

My policy started on 05/09/2025.

I contacted Principal Insurance because I had decided not to proceed with their insurance and wanted to discuss cancelling the policy. Instead of handling my request properly and providing clear information about the cancellation process, their customer service team cancelled the policy immediately and without any further notice or confirmation.

What is even more concerning is that, after the cancellation, I requested a No Claims Bonus certificate, which I need for arranging alternative insurance. Principal Insurance refused to provide the certificate, leaving me in a very difficult and frustrating position.

I find this level of customer service completely unacceptable. A customer should be given clear information and treated fairly when cancelling an insurance policy, especially when important documentation such as a No Claims Bonus certificate is requested.

I have tried to resolve this matter directly, but I have not received a satisfactory resolution. I am now taking the matter further through the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend that potential customers think carefully before choosing Principal Insurance. The way my cancellation and No Claims Bonus request were handled has seriously damaged my confidence in the company.

Disgusting company, second year of owning a bike and haven’t got my full licence yet- they sent me a quote that was cheaper than my renewal quote with another company- £270 for the whole year (bearing in mind I’m nearly 40 on a 125 motorbike and had my car license since I was 17).
Any way- sent all my details and pictures of my license and my partners as I wanted him on it on too- they requested another £70 from me before my policy started- which was fine but then after my policy started they said they needed more money from me- £278! I called them up questioning about it- fees for this than and the other and the fact I said I had a full license and not sent them stuff!? I spoke with them on the phone- they were aware I had only my CBT as I sent it to them- they had everything they said I didn’t send them and I have the email they replied to as proof!
Cost me to cancel so I lost out on money - i renewed with my last insurance company as you have a 14day cooling off period so they can still match your quote- handy to know and it’s £300 cheaper after all these random costs principle we’re trying to add! I told the guy I spoke with I would not recommend them to anyone and why wait till a week after my policy has started to request more money!! Robbers!

I have an existing policy with Principal Insurance and wanted to insure a new car through them. I waited on the phone for over fifteen minutes, gave up and sent a "contact me" request, then an email stating that I was getting a new car and wanted to insure it through Principal. I had no response yesterday or today and have had to go elsewhere. If they're that useless when trying to give them money, I worry what the service is like the rest of the time

Absolute disgusting quote after years of being with them.
I recently bought a new GS1300 having insured a GS1200 with them. They charged me €165 for 7 weeks until the end of the existing policy.
They have now quoted me €860 renewal having paid €258 last year.
They didn't send my renewal notice on time, used an excuse of a new bike and it's value. I bought a new car last year and the insurance underwritten by AXA went down. Absolute nonsense. They then said "the system" failed to add my discounts. Still quoting me well over €600. I'm 50 with 33 years riding and no claims whatsoever. Never again will I deal with them.

Did my bike insurance after wasting my time online with other companies . Found principal to be a very helpful and great to deal with and matt was a great help and very patient. Highly recommend .

Bought the policy online. Easy to fill in the details but quite lengthy, as all insurance quotes are, which I understand is a necessary evil.
Price was very competitive all things considered.

Don’t take out insurance with this insurance company.
I wanted to upgrade my bike! “That would be an extra £414 please” ok I’d like to cancel “ ok that would be £121 please’ full years cover £300, I paid a deposit & 1 payment! And £121 So they took over half of the money for the policy for 2 months insurance. Avoid at all costs.

The first call I aborted after putting me on hold that never changed from 9th in a queue for far too long. The second time I rang, after initial contact I was transferred to someone I found hard to understand, who kept putting me on hold, presumably to check how to proceed. In all it took about 90 minutes to what I thought was a simple transaction - adding a motorbike to an existing policy. The previous time I did this, the person that answer my call dealt with the whole transaction efficiently in a short space of time.
What's changed, you used to be good - probably outsourcing to a foreign call centre -Bad move! If this happens again, I'll be changing insurers.

Great service with great knowledgeable staff. Rates are competitive. I saved over £300

Cancelled my policy on the phone number on their website. Told me by email I was outside the 14 day window. I cancelled on day 8. They billed me half the policy cost for this and then denied the number advertised on their website was their number. They don't sign off emails either so you don't have a name to go back too. Just save money and avoid these crooks!

Best price for my new bike with only 1 year no claims.Great customer service. A bit of a wait for pick up on the phone but person I spoke to was professional, Efficient and knew their stuff.

Been with them less than 1 month and they have emailed me to say they will cancel my policy if I don't send in the required documents.
These have been emailed in and they are still threatening to cancel my policy.
I called them waited 8 minutes to get through, explained the situation and the agent states it will take some time for him to review the email-how long does it take to open an email and see the attachments of the documents??
The line disconnected and they didn't have the courtesy to call me back.
They don't need to cancel my policy I have saved them the time and done it for them, going back to Lexham - waste of space.

Terrible communication, lack of sympathy, they take forever to get anything done, emails aren’t monitored, they don’t follow the procedures, my camper was stolen and burned and they gave me an offer which was far too low, I challenged it and then they started investigating me saying it’s standard procedure but that should have been done prior to first offer not after I refused it. All email answers are vague and never reassuring. I filed a complaint and the customer service hasn’t improved at all. If i could give zero stars I would.

Got a quote online and it was competitive. Phoned them to accept and they went through the details again. Nothing changed but they then quoted me £1500 more. They did the same thing the previous year. Absolute waste of time and effort. False advertising.
